Whippet dog stamp from Altai

The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.
The disintegration of the Soviet Union is bringing to light the enormous diversity of the indigenous people who were kept under its rule. The Altaics were a nomadic, herding people for millennia. They had a native language and customs. Several related groups are now considered more self-ruling, such as Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan and Altai. In 1997, Altai started to issue unique stamps and some of them were of different breeds of dogs. By 2001, they issued this attractive Whippet Dog stamp for our collections.

Whippet dog stamp from Angola

This is a fairly new issue from Angola.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Whippet dog stamp from Buriatia Whippet dog stamp from Chuvash

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Whippet shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Chuvashia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint like the the sample with Australian Terriers shown to the right. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. The stamp on the left was ultimately issued by Buriatia in 1999.
Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria." Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox.

Whippet dog stamp from Dagestan Whippet dog stamp from Dagestan

The break-up of the Soviet Union is creating a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. Each of the local governments prints postage stamps, and in an effort to generate currency without having to offer the actual postal service, they are issuing topical stamps that people will buy for their attractiveness alone. These stamps are an excellent example of how we all win. They were issued in 2000 in Dagestan to commemorate our Whippets. They should remain available for some time.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Whippet dog stamp from Karelia Whippet dog stamp from Karelia

Here we have another beautiful set; a stamp on the left from Karelia and a Russian overprint on the right from Yakutia.
(See Karelia and Yakutia below for a description of the reasoning for the two stamps.
Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, to which it once belonged.
Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia.

Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Like most of the other republics, Mordovia has started issuing new postal stamps including this great Whippet.

Whippet dog stamp from Micronesia

In 1525 Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi, now in Micronesia. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold its interests to Germany, except for Guam which became a US insular area. Japan took over during World War II and by the War's conclusion most infrastructure had been laid waste by bombing, and the islands and people had been exploited by the Japanese Military to the point of impoverishment. After the war, the United Nations set up a trust that was administered by the US. On July 12, 1978 the people voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia.

As far as I know, Pabay is not a country. It is one of three uninhabited islands off the coast of Great Britain -- no doubt they make some of their money off of issuing topical postage stamps. Anyway, it is nice that they did a good stamp of a Whippet!

Whippet dog stamp from Russia

The economy of the Soviet Union is in sad shape and the inflation causes the old stamps to be useless. Rather than throw them out, they apparently overprinted these stamps with dog images. This Whippet headstudy is rather striking. I don't know how long these will be available.
Well, they were not available very long. I got only the one shipment and there were no more to be had.

This beautiful stamp was issued in 1996 by Sahara in Africa. The entire set was outstanding with a stamp for each of the major Sighthound breeds. Even though it is generally available, it comes from an expensive set.

Whippet dog stamp from St. Vincent

A beautiful painting of the Whippet on this issue by artist Vasarhelyi, put out in 1985 by St. Vincent.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Whippet.

Whippet dog stamp from Sakhalin Whippet dog stamp from Sakhalin

Both of the above stamps were issued by the Sakhalin Islands in 2001.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Whippet dog stamp from Sharjah

This is a new issue from Sharjah of a very nice Whippet.
Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens.

Whippet dog stamp from Turkmenistan

This a fairly new stamp from Turkmenistan. (see below for a stamp from Udmurtia issued with the same image. This freqeunetly happens that a country will use the same image for one of their new stamps.)
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Whippet dog stamp from Udmurtia Whippet dog stamp from Udmurtia

Both of the above stamps from Udmurtia were issued in 1999.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including these lovely Whippets.

Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominant West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Whippet dog souvenir sheet Benin Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. Whippet dog souvenir sheet Grenada

Whippet dog souvenir sheet Grenada This lovely piece of art is a souvenir sheet of the painting called Cleopatra's Banquet by Gerard Lairesse.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Whippet dog souvenir sheet Palau

Whippet dog souvenir sheet Grenada This is a brand new souvenir sheet from Palau issued in 2002.
After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of the Caroline Islands opted for independent status in 1978 rather than join the Federated States of Micronesia. A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year when the islands gained their independence.
The economy consists primarily of subsistence agriculture and fishing. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. The population enjoys a per capita income of twice that of the Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-run prospects for the tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific and the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries.

I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
