The United Arab Emirate of Ajman issued this stamp many years ago in 1972. I never quite understood the reason to combine dog breeds with cats, but nevertheless, the Westie stamp is quite nice. At one time, they were quite common, but are nearly impossible to find now.
Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Angola

This stamp from the African country of Angola was issued recently. It will probably remain available for awhile.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of islands that were forced to become a "nation" when Great Britain gave them their independence. In 1994, they issued two sets of stamps in commemoration of the Year of the Dog. This one is from the set of smaller dogs.
The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders.

The breakup of the old Soviet Union is a gold mine for stamp collectors. Many of the local areas are issueing topical stamps to help support their economy. This Westie stamp was put out by Batum just a year or so ago.
Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey.

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well. The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp issued by Buriatia in 1999.

Calve Island is an island off the edge of Scotland. There seem to be three of four of these whose major source of income is issuing topical stamps for sales around the world. This set that included the nice West Highland Terrier was issued in 1984.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Dagestan

This is another stamp from the new Russian states. Dagestan put out a set of dogs that included this Westie in 1996. The other dog is a Cairn Terrier, which is where the West Highland White Terrier originated.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

This is one of our nicer stamps for West Highland White Terriers. It is from the Commonwealth of Dominica in the Caribbean and was issued in 1997.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Gabon

The Republic of Gabon is in Africa. I believe that its official language is French.
Little is known about the history of the Gabon region prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese navigators in the Gabon Estuary in 1472, for the Bantu-speaking peoples inhabiting the region lacked writing. The slave trade achieved extensive development only between the 1760s and 1840s, as a result of heightened demand from Brazil and Cuba. Interior peoples sent undesirables from their own societies and captives from warfare down the waterways to the coast where they were collected in barracoons (temporary enclosures) to await the arrival of European ships. In 1910 Gabon became one of the four colonies within the federation of French Equatorial Africa. Gabon was granted internal autonomy in 1958 and became fully independent on 17 August 1960. Much political unrest and ultimately the outbreak of Ebola virus has set Gabon back both economically and politically. Gabon issued this somewhat whimsical stamp in 1996.

These Gambia babies can't be beat. What wonderful portraits of a deserving breed. The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Just like the British Kennel Club that is known as "The" Kennel Club, the post office of Great Britain does not put the name of the country on their stamps. The image of the queen alone is supposed to tell you where it is from. This lovely stamp was issued in 1978.

A new commemorate stamp in honor of the 100 years of the Guernsey Dog Club, 1901-2001. This stamp also has the picture of the Queen. Guernsey is a commonwealth of Great Britain.

At one time, this stamp from 1977 was about the only stamp available for Westies and it was very common. Now, twenty-five years later, they are very hard to come by. It was issued by Equitorial Guinea and the set had about 16 different breeds in it.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Kamchatka

Kamchatka, a peninsula comparable in size to Japan, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Bering and Okhotskoe Seas, and contains the last stretches of Siberian taiga. Russia's large volcanic belt, made up of 28 active craters, stretches along its shore. Though the flora and fauna, as is characteristic of northern regions, is not marked by diversity, more than half of the world's Steller's Sea Eagles, as well as the largest population of brown bears, are found here. In the center of Kamchatka is found Eurasia's only Geyser Valley. More than 150 thermal springs are scattered throughout the peninsula. Kamchatka is very sparsely populated, averaging less than 1 person per square kilometer. Most of the inhabitants live in the regional capital, but a traditional way of life continues in the peninsula's many scattered villages. Despite its pristine appearance, however, Kamchatka struggles with pollution problems, much of it stemming from the large military presence on the Peninsula.

This lovely stamp was issued by Komi in 2000.
The Komi Republic is situated in the extreme North-East part of Russia. It is a multinational state, since the population of Komi Republic is estimated at 1.2 million citizen and consists of 100 nationalities. The Komi Republic is now a democratic legal state included into the Russian Federation. The republic has unique stocks of mineral resources thanks to their location, diversity and quality. The mineral resources of Komi Republic are represented by combustible minerals, oil and gas, metal ores, minerals and balneological resources.

I am not sure what to think about this newest Russian stamp from the local state of Koriakia issued in 1998. All six of the stamps in the set show dogs attacking. I don't personally like aggressive dogs, but it is a Westie and for a complete collection, we include it here.

West Highland White Terrier stamp from Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia are not known for issueing topical stamps. This set is the first ones put out that shows dogs. The set also contains an Irish Setter, Old English Sheepdog and Welsh Springer Spaniel. These should stay available for awhile longer but are expensive.
In 1525 Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi, now in Micronesia. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold its interests to Germany, except for Guam which became a US insular area. Japan took over during World War II and by the War's conclusion most infrastructure had been laid waste by bombing, and the islands and people had been exploited by the Japanese Military to the point of impoverishment. After the war, the United Nations set up a trust that was administered by the US. On July 12, 1978 the people voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia. This unique and interesting stamp was issued in 1995 and is now very difficult to obtain.

Isn't this a beautiful stamp put out by Niger in 1998? Niger is a poor, landlocked Sub-Saharan nation. Two-thirds of Niger is desert with much of the northeastern part of the country being uninhabitable. The remaining third of the country is savannah, suitable mainly for raising livestock and limited agriculture. The country is subject to the problems of overgrazing; soil erosion; deforestation; desertification; wildlife populations (such as elephant, hippopotamus, giraffe, and lion) threatened because of poaching and habitat destruction.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000. East Timor is an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest still since the current government does not want to give up power.

S.Tome E. Principe issued this set of puppies and kittens in 1995. It is hard to see, but there is a tabby kitten in the flower pot on the left, for the Westie puppies to play with. The set was never very popular and it is still difficult to find a supplier who carries this group.
Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. The climate is tropical; hot humid; one rainy season (October to May).

Somalia, also called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a lasting presence in the area.

A lovely duo (Westie and Cairn)issued by Tadjikistan in 2002.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines are in the Caribbean. This set was issued for the Year of the Dog in 1994. It is an expensive set, but worth it, I believe.

The Republic of Touva issued both of the above stamps in 1999.
Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

The year of issue of this lovely stamp from Turkmenistan is 1997.
Turkmenistan is another new local stamp producer in Russia. They are just now starting to recognize their local treasures, such as the Akhal Teke horse (with the outstanding metallic shine.) This is from their first set of dogs, commemorating the Westie among other breeds. This will be available, I believe.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Tuvalu is an island in the South Pacific and is also known as Nukulealea.

Umm al Qiwain put out this set of puppies and kittens in 1972 just thirty years ago. They are hard to come by now and make unique addition to any Westie collection.

This stamp is hard to scan because it is an amazing 3-D. Umm al Qiwain experimented with putting out these 3-D stamps in the late 1970's. They included a set of dogs, endangered species, butterflies and flowers. I have never seen any 3-D stamps from any country before or since. Westies are very lucky that one of the six breeds was the WHWT. These are very limited and deserve to be the focal point of any Westie collection.

a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945. From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5% are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population. Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembles that of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most economically developed regions of Europe.
