West Highland White Terrier card from England
This card was issued by Horniman Tea in 1961. It is simply called, "Dogs" and a card was put in all 1/4 pound packets of Hornimans Tea. On the back, it says, "West Highland White Terrier. It is probable that the "Westie" and all other Terriers from Scotland came from the same stock -- certainly they all have short legs -- but he is the only dog from this country which is white. Rapidly becoming the most popular Terrier. A small, game, hard-looking character, strongly built and with a great air of self-importance. The jet black nose and eyes add character."

This series of 24 cards was issued by Barbers Teas in 1961. On the back, it says, "West Highland White Terrier. The only all-white Scottish breed it is descended from White Cairn Terriers. The pioneer of the type was Colonel Malcolm (sic) of Potlalloch and it has changed little over the years, though the modern trend is towards a shorter back. Full grown the height of the dog is 11 inches and weight 15-18 lbs. The coat is about 2 1/2 inches long, hard and free from curl, with a short, soft and close undercoat."

West Highland White Terrier card from England

This lovely portrait is a reprint of a set of 50 cards issued originally in Ireland in 1940 and called their silver series. This reprint is an 'authorized reproduction' issued 1993. Lucky for us that a reprint was issued as I have found very few of the originals in any breed. On the back, it says, "West Highland White Terrier. It is thought that the West Highland Whites are descended from the light colored puppies which appeared in the litters of the early Cairn Terriers. The most important breeder of a white strain was Colonel Malcolm of Poltalloch, and it was to terriers bred in the Poltalloch district that the West Highland White owes its greatest development. They were originally bred as working terriers, and it was not until 1907 that they appeared at the Kennel Club show. Although they are now kept chiefly as show dogs or pets, they still have the assertiveness and spirit of dogs bred to kill vermin."

West Highland White
Terrier card from England

This is an original photograph card issued by Pattreiouex(1939) in their Senior Service cigarettes (20 pack). On the back it says, "West Highland Terrier. He is a white strain of Scottish terrier developed by the Malcolm family of Poltalloch. Where a white coat is not a nuisance he is an excellent dog.
General Hints: Food and Training: Since young pups should be fed "little and often" their food should be partly earned as rewards. Their food should be plain: ginger nuts (good for digestion and worms); scraps of fruit (most pups like orange) should be used as training aids. Treat for worms every six weeks whether signs appear or not."

West Highland White Terrier card from England
This lovely painting was done by artist John Wardle and issued by Players in 1931. The title of the series is "Dogs by Wardle-Full Length". The back of the card has the following: "This breed has been evolved from the old White Scottish Terriers, which were carefully bred for 100 years by the Malcolm family at Poltalloch, for the destruction of foxes and other vermin. The West Highland White Terrier is a very game dog, closely related to the Cairn, only differing in colour and in being slightly larger. West Highland Whites should have straight, harsh coats, about 2-1/2 in. long and should be pure white only, any colour is strongly objected to. They should have short bodies, short legs, short tails, little prick ears, small dark eyes and black nose. Height at shoulder 9-11 in. Weight: dogs 17 lb., bitches 16 lb.

This lovely painting was put out by Players in 1925, and titled "Dogs Scenic Background" This is the no. 47 card in a series of 50. The following is printed on the back: White Scottish Terriers have been carefully bred by the Malcolm family at Poltalloch for a hundred years or more, and the modern West Highland White Terrier has been evolved from that game and "varminty" old stock. They are very closely related to the Cairn Terrier, differing only in colour and being slightly larger. They should have harsh coats about 2 ins. long, and be pure white in colour, any other colour being strongly objected to. Weight dogs 17 lbs., bitches 16 lbs. Height at shoulder 9-11 ins.

West Highland White
Terrier card from England
These cards were intended to be issued by John Player & Sons in about 1940, however a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this. Fortunately a number of the cards were printed and made available to collectors. The cards were intended to be inserted singly into packets of 10 cigarettes. The title of the set is: "Dogs' Heads: A series of 50 from Paintings by Peter Biegel" On the back, it says, "West Highland White Terrier. The ancestry of this popular breed is relatively clear, for although white dogs of similar characteristics had long existed in the Scottish Highlands, it was not until early in this century that Colonel Malcolm bred a strain that eventually became known as the West Highland White Terrier. This he did by breeding from the cream and white offspring of the Cairn Terrier, which hitherto had been regarded as undesirable in the Cairn strain. The Kennel Club recognised the West Highland White in 1909, but since then breeding has altered its appearance somewhat. It is used in its native Scotland to hunt foxes and badgers, but in other parts of the world, it is popular chiefly as a household companion."

West Highland White
Terrier card from England

This beautiful West Highland White Terrier is from a series of 25 cards titled "Grandee Top Dogs Collection". The paintings for this series were specially executed by Angela Mulliner and form a unique Collection. The description as shown on the back of the card follows: "Closely related to the Cairn and bred from small terriers of the Scottish Highlands of centuries ago, the "Westie" was valued for its courage and tenacity as a vermin killer. Small white dogs similar to the Westie were kept by the Malcolms of Poltalloch, in the nineteenth century and called Poltalloch Terriers. When first shown in Edinburgh in 1904 they were renamed West Highland White Terriers. Strongly built little dogs with a varminty look, keen eyes, small erect ears and a jaunty action the Westie should be pure white. they make pleasant companions, are tough wee dogs and good ratters. Not usually aggressive but alert enough to be good house dogs; small enough to fit into a mini, not expensive to feed and although white, the coat does not pick up much dirt. They do need regular trimming. Size about 11 inches high."

West Highland White
Terrier card from England
This lovely card was issued in 1936 by Gallaher Ltd. to be put in its packets of 10 cigarettes. On the back it says, "The West Highland White. Apart from the colour and the shorter, foxy type of face, the West Highland White, another Terrier type, is very similar to the Cairn Terrier (see No. 30 of this series): indeed, it was known as a White Cairn about a hundred years ago. There seems no doubt that the West Highland White owes its origin to the Cairn, the oldest breed known to Scotland, though the forefathers were a sandy red colour and were longer in leg. Like all other Terriers, the dog is very intelligent, game, loyal and an excellent companion."

This card is a reprint which was issued in the UK by the Card Collectors Society in 1998 and was produced for its members only. With permission the remainder of these limited cards is now available. The original cards were issued by Hignett Bros. & Co. in 1936. On the back it says, "West Highland White Terrier. Terriers of this type were known in Scotland in the time of James I, and probably originated in the albinos which occasionally appeared in the litters of the other Scottish Terriers. Queen Victoria was given a brace of West Highlands by the Duke of Argyll, who helped to establish the breed. One very famous strain was owned by Col. Malcolm of Poltalloch, and the variety was known for a time as the Poltalloch Terrier. The standard of points demands that nose, roof of mouth and pads of feet be black in colour."

West Highland White
Terrier card from England
A beautiful painting put out by Wills in 1915. A series of 25 cards with the title of "Dogs 2nd Series". This is an original issue with a slight marking on the upper right corner. I have only one of these cards and I am willing to discount this one so that this can become a special in a collection for one lucky person. The following is printed on the back of the card: "As long as 1600 Argyllshire Terriers were considered to be the finest in Scotland, for we are told that King James the First of England and sixth of Scotland wrote to Edinburgh for half a dozen "earth dogges or terrieres" from Argyll. The breed now known as the West Highland White Terrier was kept at Poltalloch sixty years ago, and were therefore known as Poltalloch Terriers. Although the Argyll strain is usually considered the purest, good specimens are bred all along the west coast of Scotland. The West Highland Terrier is smaller than the average Scottish Terrier, and more fox-like in general appearance. He is long and low in body, with straight limbs and a bright, small, intelligent eye. He is a game, hardy-looking, active little terrier, and usually weighs between 12 and 18 lbs."

West Highland White Terrier Envelopes

West Highland White
Terrier Post Card

This is a 'first day of issue' envelope with a printed card inside with the following: "The path trod by man and dog winds back to the dim caves of history. They have traveled far, these two, working and playing together as only best friends can do. And nowhere does the story of this lifelong companionship unfold with more heartfelt emotion and delightful humor then in Great Britain. Where the Englishmen long ago formed the habit of taking his dog wherever he went...from pub to pew."
Appropriately, on February 7, 1979--in celebration of the world famous annual Cruft's Dog Show--Great Britain released four stamps honoring the best-known and best-loved native British dogs; West Highland Terrier, Welsh Springer Spaniel, Old English Sheepdog, and Irish Setter. For this important First Day of Issue, Fleetwood commissioned Peter Barrett, the British artist who designed the stamps, to create original works of art for the "Magic of Man's Best Friend Collection". You get the stamp AND the envelope for one price. Don't miss out on this First Day of Issue for your own collection. I have only one. * We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
