Welsh Terrier Stamps and Cards
Welsh Terriers are finally getting enough stamps and cards to make a great collection.


Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation.The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Eire (in the Irish Language, translated as Ireland)is the name given in Article 4 of the 1937 Irish Constitution to the 26-county Irish state that was created under the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty and which has been known between 1922 and and 1937 as the Irish Free State. The name Eire is the nominative form in modern Irish Gaelic of the name for the goddess Eriu, a mythical figure who helped the Gaels conquer Ireland. Since 1949, the term Republic of Ireland has generally been used in preference to Eire, to clarify that the state rather than the whole island is under discussion. The climate has mild winters, cool summers, consistently humid; overcast about half the time. The capitol of Ireland is Dublin.

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Poland is located in Central Europe, east of Germany and is slightly smaller than New Mexico. Climate is temperate with cold, windy, cloudy, moderately severe winters with frequent precipitation; mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The terrain is mostly flat plain; mountains along the southern border; Natural resources consist of coal, sulphur, copper, natural gas, silver, lead, salt, and arable land. Natural hazard of the area is flooding. The situation has improved since 1989 due to decline in heavy industry and increased environmental concern by postcommunist governments. Historically, an area of conflict because of flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain.

These are included simply because they were the only overprints that were available in past years, in this case 1993. There was a limited number released to the outside world and then they were all gone. These scans are for historical significance only since the originals are absolute collector's items now. Be sure to get a set of the new overprints. As far as I know, there were 100 of each overprint available and the small number of those that I was able to get will be gone very quickly.

Somalia, also called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a lasting presence in the area.

Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Welsh Terrier Tobacco, Tea, and Playing Cards


Wills Cigarettes issued this set of 40 cards ORIGINALLY IN 1940. Due to the paper shortage at that time only a few were issued and became very expensive collectors items($400). In 1990 this same set'Puppies by Dawson' came out with a reprint of 1940. I have only one of these reprints. On the back of the card: "TAFFY"

There was a big family here, but "TAFFY" was the only one I could persuade to remain still, and that only in his mistress's arms. He was a jolly little fellow, and I was very pleased to meet him, and admired his little black coat and tan legs. "Taffy" looked game for any mischief, and I belive he was.

The old English or Welsh Black and Tan; he is the ancestor of the Airdale and Manchester terriers. A good companion dog.
GENERAL HINTS
BEGGING. Begging can be most irriating to Master and to vistors. In any event it is a useless accomplishment. If you wish to train your pup to beg, sit him in the required position, hold his forefeet, feed him and say 'sit up'. He will learn at once and will never forget.

WELSH TERRIER
As a house-dog and companion, the Welsh Terrier is a splendid alternative to his more popular white relation, the Fox Terrier. He is quieter both in temperament and in colouring, though lacking nothing in activity and courage. Indeed it is said that the only disadvantage of this breed for use with the hounds is their similarity in colouring to the foxes themselves one or two having been torn up by the hounds in mistake

WELSH TERRIER
This variety is very closely related to the old English black-and-tan Terrier, and years ago a dog, "Dick Turpin," won in separate classes for both varieties. The latter breed is now practically extinct, but the Welsh is fairly popular. It is said that Wire Fox Terrier blood was used at one time to improve head properties, but by now this influence has been bred out, and the breed's own type established. A Club for the variety was formed in 1886, in which year it was first exhibited.

I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
