Weimaraner Stamps

Weimaraner stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. Whatever the reason, we are all winners when such lovely stamps are issued. This one is from Abkhazia and was produced in 1999.

Weimaraner stamp from Ajman

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself. These beautiful puppies represent the Weimaraner breed on a stamp from Ajman issued in 2000.

The stamp on the left is a 'typical puppy' stamp from Antigua & Barbuda issued in 1998. The stamp from Antigua & Barbuda on the right was issued in 1994.
These two islands were forced to become a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." They are not always at ease with each other. For the Year of the Dog, 1994, Antigua and Barbuda issued two sets of stamps that honored dogs -- one of large dogs and one of small dogs.

Weimaraner stamp from Bernera Islands

This stamp from the Bernera Islands was issued in 1983. There are a number of islands off the coast of Scotland that seem to have no purpose but to issue local stamps. For those of use who collect topical stamps, it is wonderful. Bernera Islands issued a number of dog stamps in 1983, but none before or since. They are very rare and unusual.

Weimaraner stamp from Buriatia Weimaraner stamp from Buriatia

This lovely issue(left) from Buriatia is very new, put out in 2001. A souvenir sheet with the same image was issued in the same year from Kalmykia. (see below for the souvenir sheet).
This funny stamp (right) from Buriatia was issued in 1998. The whole set was odd-ball with dogs playing under chairs, and hiding behind things. A yawning Weimaraner just seems to fit the collection.

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp issue.

Weimaraner stamp from Dagestan

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Weimaraner stamp from Grenada Grenadines

This stamp from Grenada & Grenadines was issued in 1995. It comes from a set of 12 dog stamps that are all stylistic representations of their breed. Fairly common.
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

In 1993 Grenada and the Grenadines was issued a really unique set of stamps that pairs each breed with a landmark from their country of origin. In the case of the Weimaraner, it is Nesselwang in Germany. I like this stamp a lot.

Weimaraner stamp from Guinea Ecuatorial

This stamp from Guinea Equatorial in Africa was issued in 1978. At one time, this was the only Weimaraner stamp that we had available. It is taken from an actual photo and considering how old it is (29 years), the representative is very nice.

Weimaraner stamp from Kalmykia

Kalmykia issued the 'puppy in pink' in 1999. There were several breeds in the set all with the pink background.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Weimaraner stamp from Koriakia

The break-up of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. The individual states have started issuing stamps that should be attractive to collectors so that people will buy them without using the associated services and expecting to actually mail a letter :-) This stamp from Koriakia is just such an instance. It was issued last year along with several other breeds. I expect it to remain available.

Weimaraner stamp from Nevis

This stamp from Nevis was issued in 1983.
St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. It received independence in 1983, the same year that this set of stamps was issued. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the Spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

Weimaraner stamp from Sakhalin Island

A wonderful pair of weimaraners.
This stamp from the Sakhalin Islands was issued in 1999.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Weimaraner stamp from Sahara Occ.

This stamp from Sahara Occ. was issued in 1995. This nifty set also contains the Clumber Spaniel and Wirehaired Griffon among the unusual breeds. The Sahara stamps are almost always very expensive.
In 1976 the Saharawi people declared their independence from Spanish rule and set up the Republic of Saharawi for self-determination. It has been a very rocky road.
Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months.

Weimaraner stamp from St. Vincent

Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years.

Weimaraner Souvenir Sheet from Turkmenistan

Weimaraner Souvenir Sheet from Turkmenistan Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.
This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are seven breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through every one. My, what an accomplishment. The Weimaraner is shown enlarged to the right.

Weimaraner Trading Cards and Playing Cards

Weimaraner trading card

This is a premiere trading card made for use in vending machines manufactured exclusively by Oak Manufacturing of Culver City, California in 1950. The following is printed on the back of the card: Perhaps America's most exclusive breed, the first Weimaraner was not brought to this country until 1929. Weimaraner owners, in order to keep the strain pure, have exercised rigid control breeding ever since. The dog was originally "manufactured" by nobles in an attempt to combine the best characteristics of many different types of hunting dogs by cross-breeding. This handsome, obedient dog is big, gray and short-haired. In his brief American career he has proved himself a trustworthy friend and eminent sportsman.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
