"This breed, the forerunner of the modern Bull Terrier, was first heard of 150 years ago. Gallaher "Dogs A Series" was issued in 1936. This was a series of 48 cards, Staffordshire Bull Terrier is No. 46. A description is printed on the back of the card. "It is only of recent years that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier has become prominent and the Kennel Club has lately introduced classes for the breed at Shows. Although it is very similar in build to the familiar Bull Terrier, the Staffordshire has two outstanding differences; the colouring is brindle and white, with brindle predominating, and the ears have the "drop" characteristic which appears in numerous Terrier types, as well as in the old type of Bull Terrier."

GRANDEE Top Dogs Collection is a series of paintings executed by Angela Muliner and form a unique collection. This series was issued by John Player & Sons in 1979. The back of the card has a wonderful description of the Staffordshire. "Tough, determined and courageous today's "Staffie" is descended from the old Pit Dogs or Pit Bull-Terriers of the nineteenth century. When bull baiting was banned in 1835 dog fighting became popular, especially in the Midlands. Many crosses with the bull-baiting dogs were tried but the old fashioned Bulldog crossed with the English Terrier was often used. Some of these ended up as the modern Staffordshire Bull Terrier and were recognised by the Kennel Club in 1935. Smooth coated dogs, red, fawn, black, blue or brindle, with or without white markings, medium sized, strong and muscular with broad heads and honest eyes. If properly trained when young the Staffie is a reliable companion, friendly with people and fond of children. Intelligent dogs, several have competed in Working Trials. They make loyal guards but must be sensibly brought up--an undisciplined Staffie can be a menace. Weight 24-38 lbs. Height 14-16 inches."

Staffordshire Bull Terrier Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Staffordshire Bull Terrier history.
