The SPRINGER SPANIEL

Carreras Ltd. issued this photograph of the child and Springer under the title of 'Dogs & Friend' in 1936. The subjects are not identified. The back of the card has the following: "This Springer Spaniel has won 28 Challenge Certificates. A gun dog, according to Kennel Club rules, has also to win at Field Trials before it can boast of the title of "Champion". When a dog has accomplished this he is what is known as a "dual" champion. All Spaniels originally came from Spain, and their name is a corruption of the word, and all breeds of Spaniels are related to each other. The Springer was one of the earliest varieties. Most Spaniels are even-tempered and obedient."

ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
These cards were to be issued originally in 1940. However, due to the paper shortage during World war II only a few were issued and have been made part of collections. If we could obtain an original they would be expensive. The card pictured here is from the series 'Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940' issued in 1994. The following is on the back of the card: "Among Spaniels the Springer is a favourite with field trial enthusiasts and is second to the Cocker in popularity as a show dog. The breed was used first to "spring" game which was to be netted or else pursued by hawks or greyhounds, and it grew in popularity when the shooting of game became common. The breed's exact origin is unknown beyond the fact that it can be traced to the early Springing Spaniels, but many authorities agree that some of the other Spaniels, have orginated from it. Fast and enduring, the Springer is used by many sportsmen as a general help for nearly all kinds of shooting."

Card from England

ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
A nice headstudy by artist Peter Beigel and issued by Players for enclosure in their small packages(10 to a package) of cigarettes in 1940. A description of the Springer Spaniel is shown on the back of the card: "The English Springer is generally regarded as the best general-purpose gun-dog. The Kennel Club did not recognise it as a separate breed until 1902; until then it had been known as the Norfolk Spaniel. This strong, handsome and intelligent dog is becoming increasingly popular both in the field and on the show bench, and is an outstanding performer in Field Trials. The name Springer is a reminder that the dog was originally used to "Spring" or flush game for netting or hawking. This Spaniel varies in colour, but is usually black and white or liver and white."

Gallaher Tobacco issued these nice paintings by artist Mabel Gear in 1936. Shown on the back of the card: "The English Springer Spaniel, though a large type is one of the many sporting Spaniel breeds which must have come from the same source. According to one eminent authority the Spaniel originated in Spain and was used to "start" game; the name "Springer" indicates that the object of this particular breed was not to spring on the game, but to disturb the birds so that they sprang, to be either netted or shot. This dog has remarkable eyesight and an uncanny sense of smell; it makes an excellent guard and companion."

ENGLISH SPRINGER SPANIEL
This colorful card was issued by Hignett Tobacco in 1936. Shown on the reverse: "The advent of this variety as a show and field dog may be traced to William Arkwrigh, who promoted the first Spaniel Trials in 1899, though references to the Springer Spaniel may be found in 17th-century writings. The word "springer" comes from the breed's habit of springing at its game when flushing it. This variety is thought to be the oldest Spaniel, and its origin and that of the English Setter may be closely allied. Among Spaniels it is second in popularity to the Cocker as a show dog, but appears in larger numbers at trials."

"JUDY"
(Welsh Springer Spaniel)
Wills cigarettes issued these 'Puppies by Dawson' originally in 1940. Only a few were issued due to the paper shortage during World War II and those are now in collectors hands only. If they were available today they would be in the neighborhood of $400.00 each. Then in 1990 'authorized reproductions' were issued. This card is one of the reproductions. The back has the following narrative by the artist Lucy Dawson: "Judy" spent the day with me alone at my studio, and we became great friends even in so short a time. I hope to renew her friendship very soon, as she was a charming model and a perfect little lady--very pretty with her silky gold and white coat. She didn't mind being left with me--I think she approved of the visit."

Welsh Springer Spaniel.
Players & Sons issued this set of 50 cards with drawings by artist Arthur Wardle in 1931. Shown on the back of the card: "These red and white Spaniels may be described as enlarged Cockers, but with less feathering and short ears. The Welsh springer was recognised by the Kennel Club as a separate variety in 1902. He is a symmetrical, compact, strong, merry and very active dog, not stilty, and obviously built for endurance and activity. His coat should be flat and thick and of a nice silky texture, never curly or waved. Colour: only red and white. The uniformity of colour and its irregular distribution give him quite a picturesque appearance. Height about 12 in. Weight: 35--40 lb."

His invariable red and white colouring, his legs well proportioned to his body, his domed intelligent head combine to give him a sprightly and handsome appearance. He is certainly a very old breed and has been bred true in Wales for centuries. His nature is lively, and he has the intelligence, faithfulness and endurance common to all spaniels."

" A breed whose popularity is chiefly confined to Wales, the Welsh Springer probably comes from the same stock as did the English Springer, and was known in Wales as a shooting dog for generations before it was placed on the Kennel Club Register in 1902. In size it is between the Cocker and the English Springer, but its colour is restricted to rich dark red and white. It rarly appears at English shows, except the larger Championship events, but it has quite a large following in Wales, where it used to be known as the "Starter."

Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very reasonable prices. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
