Stamps of Other Sighthound Breeds

A special page for special Sighthounds, the Ibizan Hound, Podenco, and Lurcher.

As we search the world for dog stamps, we often start with just a couple of each breed, but with luck, we are able to get enough of a single breed to give them their own pages. These Sighthound breeds have moved on to their own pages: (just click on the breed name to go there) Afghan Hounds, Borzoi, Greyhounds, Irish Wolfhounds, Italian Greyhounds, Salukis, Scottish Deerhounds , and Whippets.

Ibizan Hound Stamp from Central Africa

This is the only Ibizan Hound that I have found so far. It is from the new Russian state of Kalmykia, and was issued in 1998. This stamp is rather small, but is a lovely representative of the breed.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Podenco Hound Stamp from Portugal

This is listed as one of the breeds of Portugal, the Podenco. The artist is Alberto Cardoso and I find it interesting that is is obviously a Sighthound and related to the Pharaoh and Ibizan Hounds.

Greyhound dog stamp from the state of Oman

Althouth the dog on this stamp is listed at a Bedouin Greyhound of Akkaba, it is probably a Saluki or Tazi instead of a real greyhound. It is a neat stamp though.
The State of Oman is one of the United Arab Emirates.

Lurcher dog stamp from Eritrea

I believe that Eritrea is also an island off of the coast of Scotland. In the 1970's they honored the Lurcher with this stamp. In this case, he looks very much like a Scottish Deerhound.
This unique stamp was issued by the Islamic country of Eritrea which is on the Red Sea between Sudan and Ethiopia. This set of stamps was issued more than 30 years ago and is kind of on the endangered species list.

Lurcher dog stamp from Gambia

In 1997, Gambia put out a most unusual set of stamps honoring "Royal Dogs", those dogs owned by royalty from around the world. Along with the Pekingese, Shih Tzu and other elegant breeds was this Lurcher was owned by King George VI.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

If you can send a scan of any other stamps of Sighthound Breeds, I will put it with the set (I use 160% jpg's). If you know of others, just drop me a note and I will list it in the hope that others will help us to fill out the page.

I know that there is a Rhodesian Ridgeback stamp put out by the RSA (Republic of South Africa) with two dogs. One is sitting with his back to us, showing the wonderful ridges.

If you have any to trade, just let me know as well. When the ones that I have for sale are gone, this page will be left as an archive to the breed. If you would like to link to it, its URL is http://www.AnimalStamps.com

We can take visa/mc/disc or Paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't anticipate getting more in the near future. These are left over from years ago when we used to sell them at the dog shows.

I do have other breeds available. Let me know and maybe I'll do a page for other breeds.
