Shar Pei stamp from Abkhazia Shar Pei stamp from Ingushetia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Shar Pei shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Ingushetia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Shar Pei image from the overprint, put out by Abkhazia.
Ingushetia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. It was part of a joint Chechen-Ingush autonomous republic from 1936 until 1991, when Chechnya declared independence and the Ingush separated from the republic.

Shar Pei stamp from Altai

This lovely stamp from Altai was issued in 2004.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.
The disintegration of the Soviet Union is bringing to light the enormous diversity of the indigenous people who were kept under its rule. The Altaics were a nomadic, herding people for millennia. They had a native language and customs. Several related groups are now considered more self-ruling, such as Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan and Altai. In 1997, Altai started to issue unique stamps and some of them were of different breeds of dogs.

Shar Pei stamp from Antigua

This lovely stamp was put out by Antigua and Barbuda in 1997.
Antigua & Barbuda are a pair of sister islands in the north east Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders.

Shar Pei stamp from Benin

It may be noted that Benin, former Dahomey, has perhaps the "most beaten tracks by Europeans of any in Africa". The history of Benin is a succession of kingdoms, followed by years of communist rule and finally independence in 1990.

Shar Pei stamp from Bhutan

Bhutan is an Asian country between China and India. In addition to the lovely Shar Pei, this set included the Saluki, Siberian Husky and Dalmation. These are beautifully done and should remain available for some time.
Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries. It takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.

Shar Pei stamp from Cambodia

Shar Peis have recently been blessed with a number of stamps commemorating this noble breed. This is a lovely issue from Cambodia, done in 1997. The dog is listed as a Shar Pei (Chien de combat chinois)

Shar Pei stamp from Chuvashia Shar Pei stamp from Osettia

A nice rendition of the Shar Pei issued by Chuvasia (left). It is the stamp that was ultimately issued in 1998 to match the overprint from Ossetia on the right. (See Abkhazia and Ingushetia above for information on the overprints) Chuvashia borders both of Russia’s European and Asian regions along one of the major tributaries of the Volga River. Chuvashia’s hops production and the locals’ love of beer has earned the republic the nickname of "Russia’s Bavaria." Chuvash people are Turkish; strangely they are not Muslim but Christian orthodox. This wonderful Shar Pei stamp was first issued as a Russian Overprint shown on the right, from North Osettia.
I found some very interesting information when searching for a history of Ossetia. It lies near the Black Sea in the Russian region of Georgia. Today’s 700,000 North and South Ossetians are herdsmen and horsemen, probably descended from the Scythian warrior nomads of ancient Greek times.
Like the first settlers of Yorkshire they use the word ‘Don’ for river and, like the people of Ossett, they chose the fleece as an emblem. A fleece also appears at the center of Ossett's coat of arms.
Is there a connection? Some versions of the Greek legend of Jason and the Argonauts tell us that on his long homeward voyage Jason took the Golden Fleece by river journey from the Black Sea to the North Sea – a route well known to the Vikings who are thought to have founded Ossett. In addition, Ossett is a Viking place name that may mean 'Osla's seat' or 'ridge camp'. Did Vikings found Ossetia? Perhaps. In the meantime, the local government of both North Ossetia and South Ossetia have issued a few fascinating stamps, including this great Shar Pei.

Shar Pei stamp from Dagestan

Another picture of the Shar Pei on a chair.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Shar Pei stamp from Guyana

This stamp from Guyana was issued in 1997.
Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Shar Pei stamp from Kalmykia

This whimsical stamp was issued by Kalmykia in 2001.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Shar Pei stamp from Karakalpakia

This stamp from Karakalpakia issued in 1998 is not the size of an ordinary stamp. It is very small but detailed. Karakalpakia is another Russian state that has issued an interesting set of dog stamps. This series is a collection of rather small stamps, so it is enlarged more than the others, but the quality and the wrinkling is more than evident.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens. Shar Pei stamp from Udmurtia

What a lovely stamp by Udmurtia in 2001.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Shar Pei.

Shar Pei stamp from Yakutia

The Russian economy is in such sad shape right now that the government is looking for ways to generate hard currency without any extra expense. So many of the local states are issuing topical stamps that can be sold to foreigners without having to supply the associated mail services. I am not going to complain since it gives us another opportunity to have an interesting item for display in our breed. That is what happened here. Shar Pei stamp from Grenada

Shar Pei card from Grenada We have two outstanding souvenir sheets to honor this breed. This first one is from the island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean. It is the head stamp for the Dogs of the World series that they issued and it shows the classic dog with the Great Wall of China behind him. Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
