Carreras Cigarettes issued these "Dogs and Friend" in 1936. The description on the back of the card is by LADY KITTY RITSON
The SCOTTISH TERRIER
"The Scottish Terrier is sometimes called an "Aberdeen Terrier," but this is wrong, for there is no such breed as an Aberdeen. They are handsome little dogs, but for the ordinary owner they have been rather spoiled by being bred for show, which results in their looking like wooden toys instead of dogs. they are very popular in America and big prices are paid for show specimens imported from England. They are game little dogs. but the male is inclined to fight."

(Scottish Terriers)
Wills included these cards singly in their packages of 20 cigarettes. They were originally issued in 1940 and if you could get one, it would be over $400.00. This card is a reprint of the 1940. Artist Lucy Dawson sketched these darling Scotties and wrote the narration shown on the back of the card: "Two tiny black "movies", with no idea of keeping still, had that day arrived from Scotland, and after a journey which would have tired most people, they were as lively as could be. They were ready to tear up anything or anyone, and were giving tongue to let you know it. They knew about biscuits, but I forgot to ask if they preferred shortbread!"

This beautiful head study by artist Arthur Wardle titled "Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940" was issued by Players originally in 1940. This is an authorized reproduction issued by Players in 1994 and sells for much less than than the original. The reverse side of the card has the following narrative: "The 'scottie' is the most popular of Scotland's four terrier varieties, and its merit as a show specimen is so high that it frequently wins best of all breeds at leading championship fixtures. Its ancestors were little nondiscript animals, whose only virtues were their courage and ability to tackle foxes and other vermin. It was between 1875 and 1880 that the breed appeared in the show ring. They made their debut at Aberdeen and for several years were called Aberdeen Terriers. The early dogs were leggy, long-backed, and short-headed, but breeding has shortened the legs and the back and lengthened the head."

The Scottie has a low, short, strong and compact body, long head, strong jaw, small prick ears, short tail and short legs. His coat should be hard and straight, about two inches long and very dense. Artist Peter Biegel did the sketches for this series of cards titled 'Dogs Heads by Biegel' in 1940. They were distributed by Players cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card: "It was 1879 before the Scottish Terrier was named and distinguished from the miscellaneous breeds of the Scottish Highlands, and it has not changed much in appearance since that time. Like its compatriots, the Skye, the Cairn and the West Highland Terriers, it is of indeterminate ancestry, and like them it was bred for the purpose of routing out and destroying vermin. Today it is as a house-dog that the Scottish Terrier finds favour in the English-speaking countries, for in addition to having a dignified and rather independent attitude, it is both loyal and good-natured. The accepted colourings are black, black and grey brindles, or iron grey."

Gallagher issued these colorful cards in 1936. The title of the series is 'Dogs A Series' A nice description is shown on the back of the card:
THE SCOTTISH TERRIER
"The Scottish Terrier is a hardy dog whose origin can be traced to the old sandy-coloured Cairn Terrier. The present type, evolved in Scotland by skilful breeding, was considered an improvement sufficient to justify changing the name to the Scottish Terrier. Over a century ago this dog was known as an Aberdeen Terrier, a name still used by some owners. Like its ancestors it is a shortbodied rough-coated little animal, very active and a great fighter. It is affectionate and an excellent house-dog,"

This particular card is slightly damaged so we have reduced the price. The printing on the back of the card is identical to the one below from Oak Mfg.
"Considerable speculation surrounds the early history and origin of the Scottish Terrier. It is a known fact, however, that the dog is indigeous to Britain, and has been bred for over sixty-five years. 1883 was the first importation of the Scottish Terrier into the United States, The "Scottie," as he is nicknamed, is a low-set, sturdy dog of independent nature and philosophical dispostion. This beautiful artists rendition of the Scottish Terrier was issued in a set of 50 cards put out by Hignett Cigarettes in 1936. A description appears on the back: "The most popular of Scotland's terriers, the Scottie's origin is usually attributed to the Aberdeen district; it was formerly known as the Aberdeen Terrier. The variety was closely related to the other Scottish varieties, and at the earlier shows was not classified separately. Its original use was to follow foxes and badgers underground; now, however, it is chiefly kept as a show specimen and companion. Scotties are very popular in the U.S.A., where one of the leading exhibitors is the novelist, S. S. van Dine."

Wills issued this "Dogs 2nd Series" way back in 1915. This card of the Scottish Terrier is no. 17 in a set of 25. They were enclosed singly in packs of 20 cigarettes. The back of the card has the follwing description: "As a show dog, the Scottish Terrier dates from about 1877-9. The breed became popular at once, and to-dayScottie is one of the most extensively owned varieties. Experts differ as to the exact age of the breed, some regarding it as comparatively modern, while others consider it a very ancient variety. Of all the various breeds of terriers the Scottish is, on the whole, the best companion, and is excellent both as show dog and as house-dog. A good Scottish Terrier should weigh 16-18 lbs., and should be 9-12 inches high. His colour varies between iron grey, brindle, black, and sandy. There should be no white markings. His coat should be about two inches in length, thick, hard, and wiry. The tail should be about 7 inches long."

Scottish Terriers have wonderful stamps as well. To see the
Scottish Terrier Stamps from Around the World, click here.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* We do have discounts if you want to buy more than one.

* We have a couple of copies of some of the cards, and since they are much more fun when you have a "set", we would be happy to give a discount for multiple purchases. This can make a set of interesting breed cards quite reasonable. Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
