Schnauzer card from England

THE SCHNAUZER
"The Schnauzer is an ancient German breed and is noted for its outstanding fathfulness and affection towards its master and home. He is extremely intelligent and of a hardy nature. He is a killer of rats and other vermin but has few hunting or poaching instincts. The coat is straight, hard, dense and wiry. Colours are pepper and salt, or black. Red, light silvergrey, sandy and fawn shades are looked upon with extreme disfavour as signs of degeneration. The most desirable height is between 17" and 20"."

Schnauzer card from England

This is from a series of 40 cards that were supposed to be issued in 1940. However, a paper shortage in 1940 due to World War II only a very few were printed. If you were able to obtain an original they would be in excess of $400.00. In 1990, an authorized reproduction was issued titled 'Puppies by Dawson - Reprint of 1940". Shown on the back of the card is a description by the artist Lucy Dawson:
"BORIS"
(Schnauzer)
"A strong fellow this and one to be proud of~~but he didn't think much of artists. Biscuits were rather to his taste and he had that expectant look~~a sort of Micawber nature~~as though he were always exspecting something to turn up. I think "Boris" had been used to an exciting time with his kennel mates and small brothers and sisters."

Schnauzer card from England

This card was also to be issued during World War II and it too had a very few printed at that time. In 1994 an authorized reproduction was issued under the title (Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of of 1940). The back of the card has the following:
SCHNAUZER
"This Continental breed did not appear in show rings in Britain until quite recently, but it has quickly established itself. It is said to have existed in Germany for hundreds of years, and dogs of this type appear in several medieval paintings and groups of sculpture. Schnauzers are highly regarded on the Continent as general utility dogs and killers of vermin; they were used in the Great War and are now employed in police work. Although they are generally kept in Britain for exhibition or as companions, several Schnauzers have proved the owners' claims for the breed's intelligence by their prowess in obedience trials."

SCHNAUZER
This card is from a series of 48 that were issued by Gallaher Tobacco in 1938 and titled 'Dogs-Second series of 48'. The following is printed on the back of the card "The Schnauzer is a very popular dog on the Continent. He is of the terrier type, having all the courage and liveliness associated with that race of dogs. When the ears are full grown, as in English specimens, the terrier affinity is clearly seen, but the ears are likely to have been cropped in specimens from abroad, a custom forbidden by law over here. This remark applies perhaps still more strongly to the Boxer (see card No. 13 in this second series.)."

Schnauzer Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Schnauzer history.

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, or PayPal. We try to keep all cards in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
