Saluki stamp from Ajman

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Saluki stamp from Benin

This lovely tri Saluki was issued by the Republic of Benin in 1997. It is beautifully done.
Benin is a Western Africa country with very little tourism or resources. All the more impressive that they issued such a lovely set of stamps including this Saluki in 1997. I expect them to remain easily available for awhile.
It may be noted that Benin, former Dahomey, has perhaps the "most beaten tracks by Europeans of any in Africa". The history of Benin is a succession of kingdoms, followed by years of communist rule and finally independence in 1990.

Saluki stamp from Bhutan

A 1997 issue from the African nation of Bhutan is an attractive drawing of a chocolate Saluki. Since it was just issued in 1997, it should be available for some time, but even now, they are not yet common.

Saluki stamp from France

This nifty stamp is highly unusual. It was done in France in 1985 in honor of the artist, Alberto Giacometti. He was known for this type of art work and the stamp carries the name of simply "The Dog". But we all know what it is and it is beautiful in its essence. No Saluki collection would be complete without this stamp, but I have searched everywhere and cannot find more of them.
I have one of these for some lucky person.

Saluki stamp from Grenada

A wonderful pairing of a gorgeous Saluki and images from Saudi Arabia. This is a recent issue from the island of Grenada. Each breed was pictured with a famous landmark from their country of origin, in this case the Rub' al Khali.

At the other end of the spectrum is this darling stamp issued by Grenada for the Year of the Dog in 1994. In addition to this outstanding Saluki, the Society Dog Show also featured a Chihuahua, a Poodle, and of course Pluto (who probably won. :-)

Saluki stamp from Jewish Republic

The break-up of the former Soviet Union has caused massive problems with the economy in the local Russian states. Inflation has been rampent to the point that the stamps that have been printed are not worth mailing a letter. To solve this problem, the local states have taken blocks of 5 stamps and overprinted an image with a new value on them. This is one of those local Russian Overprints with our wonderful Salukis adorning it. When I first got a set of overprints, I assumed that they would be available for some time. This is not true. I was never able to get another copy of the ones that I had. I don't expect these to be available for any length of time either. Each overprint is done on stamps of five different colors: red, green, turquoise, tan and dark blue.

Saluki stamp from Kamchatka

Kamchatka, a peninsula comparable in size to Japan, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Bering and Okhotskoe Seas, and contains the last stretches of Siberian taiga. Russia's large volcanic belt, made up of 28 active craters, stretches along its shore. Though the flora and fauna, as is characteristic of northern regions, is not marked by diversity, more than half of the world's Steller's Sea Eagles, as well as the largest population of brown bears, are found here. In the center of Kamchatka is found Eurasia's only Geyser Valley. More than 150 thermal springs are scattered throughout the peninsula. Kamchatka is very sparsely populated, averaging less than 1 person per square kilometer. Most of the inhabitants live in the regional capital, but a traditional way of life continues in the peninsula's many scattered villages. Despite its pristine appearance, however, Kamchatka struggles with pollution problems, much of it stemming from the large military presence on the Peninsula.

saluki stamp from Karakalakia

Kara Kalpakia is another of the local Russian states. This wonderful headstudy was issued in 1999.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Saluki stamp from Russia

This set of stamps was done in Russia in 1988. Sussi will tell you that this is probably actually a Taiga, but it is beautiful and a nice addition to a Saluki collection. The others in the set include: a Borzoi taking down a fox with a Cossack rider in the background, a Brittany Spaniel retrieving with a hunter in a boat, and a Siberian Huskey attacking a bear.

Saluki stamp from St. Thomas

Wonderful Saluki puppies are very hard to find. Sao Tome E. Principe issued this pair of particolored puppies in 1995.
Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. The climate is tropical; hot humid; one rainy season (October to May).

Saluki stamp from Tadjikistan

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including this Saluki that was put out in 2002.

Saluki stamp from Tanzania

This set was put out in 1994 by Tanzania. It was done as a part of the "Dogs of the World " series that was made up of four sheets of nine dog breeds each. Saluki stamp from Tatarstan

A very small stamp but a very impressive stamp from Tatarstan.
Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's Northern Mecca. The set of stamps that this Saluki is from was issued in 2001 and was just the first of several new sets from that country.

Saluki stamp from Turkmenistan

This stamp was put out by Turkmenistan in 2002.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Saluki stamp from Viet Nam

This stamp is very hard to find. It was issued in 1990 in Viet Nam of the Persian Greyhound (listed as a Levrier Persan). I think that it was actually issued for the Asian Conference on Stamps and Coins held in New Zealand that year. The copies that I have are uncancelled.
Viet Nam is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and South China Sea, alongside China, Laos and Cambodia. It is slightly larger than New Mexico. The climate is tropical in south; monosoonal on north with hot, rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). The terrain is low, flat delta in south and north; hilly, mountainous in far north and northwest. Natural hazards are occasional typhoons with extensive flooding. Vietnamese is the official language with English increasingly favored as a second language with some French, chinese, and Khumer. It is a communist state with Hanoi the capital. The people achieved their independence from France on Sept. 2, 1945. VietNam is a poor, densely populated country that has had to recover from the ravages of war, the loss of financial support from the old soviet bloc, and the rigidities of a central planned economy.

Saluki stamp from Mozambique

Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

In a breed of beautiful animals and equally beautiful stamps, this set is head and shoulders above anything else that I have seen. These three Salukis (and the one below) were gathered from two very rare and expensive sets of dogs from China (the others in the sets were six Greyhounds and a Tibetian Mastiff.) These ten were presented as a gift to the emperor, note the Imperial Seals. These are the works of the Italian Jesuit Priest Guiseppe Castiglione who resided in the forbiden city during the Qing Dynasty. His oil paintings of Chinese arts is one of a kind, he has no successor, most of his works are in museums.

On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
