Poodle
stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services.
As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts.

In 1990, upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bashkortostan declared its state sovereignty. Its capital city is Ufa and the economy depends on agriculture, stockbreeding and some industry.

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. The stamp on the left is listed as a miniature poodle while the one on the right is standard, both issued in 1984.
Eynhallow is also known as Holy Island. It is one of the numerous islands off the coast of Scotland that issues stamps under their own authority. They are not really valid postage stamps but if the island is occupied, the stamps can be used to send mail to the mainland, but are not of use beyond that or even to send mail back to the island. Many of the islands are not occupied and the stamps from those are considered simply privately produced stamps.

This stamp was issued in 2000 by Karelia.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

Poodle
stamp from Montserrat

Montserrat (Island), dependency of the United Kingdom, with 39 square miles in area, is one of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea. Montserrat is located southwest of Antigua and northwest of Guadeloupe. A governor administers the dependency with the assistance of executive and legislative councils.
The island was first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was named by him for a noted monastery on Montserrat, a mountain in Spain. Once known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, Montserrat may have to find a new nickname. After more than 350 years of quiet, most of the island is now covered with a dull gray sheet of ash after the devastating eruptions of the Soufriere Hills Volcano that took place beginning in late June 1997. The volcanic eruptions devastated the island's economy and the British government sent financial aid and provided supplies to build housing for the remaining population of about 4,000.
In spite of all the problems, a beautiful sheet of stamps featuring dogs was released in 1999 showing Yorkshire Terriers, a Welsh Terrier, a King Charles Spaniel, a Poodle and a Beagle. The same stamps were issued separately in sheets.

In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.

Miniature Poodle Souvenir Sheets

Poodle souvenir sheet from Bhutan

Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries. It takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.

Poodle souvenir sheet from Grenada

Poodle souvenir sheet from Grenada
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

Poodle souvenir sheet from Micronesia

In 1525 Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi, now in Micronesia. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold its interests to Germany, except for Guam which became a US insular area. Japan took over during World War II and by the War's conclusion most infrastructure had been laid waste by bombing, and the islands and people had been exploited by the Japanese Military to the point of impoverishment. After the war, the United Nations set up a trust that was administered by the US. On July 12, 1978 the people voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia.
