POINTER
"The most spectacular gundog, both in show ring and field but unfortunately little used with the gun now as the practice of driving game has deprived him of his occupation. Like so many gundogs, orginally of Spanish descent. Apart from his elegant outline, the head, with its slightly concave, i.e. dish-faced muzzle is most distinctive. Colour principally white with black or liver markings. Occasionally whole blacks are seen".

Another tea card. This time from Amaran tea in 1965, enclosed in their small packages. Amaran Tea only had 'headstudies' on their cards in a set of 25 different breeds and issued in 1965. The following is printed on the reverse side of the card:
POINTER
"This is one of the oldest breeds of sporting dog. A well trained Pointer will stand stock still for a long time when close to game, which it is able to follow because of its powerful sense of smell. Described by LADY KITTY RITSON
The POINTER
"The Pointer has received its name because, when it discovers the presence of game it stops dead and "points." In this position it makes the most lovely picture. It is one of the most popular of show dogs, and the one in the picture has won seven Challenge Certificates and has never been beaten. She is two years old. She won Best of Breed at Crufts in 1936. In England we use them only for "pointing" but in America they are trained to retrieve as well".

POINTER
"The Pointer like the Spaniel group originated in Spain and developed the ability to point to the bird with his nose, body and tail in a straight line. It will stay in this position for a considerable time. In the 17th centry it was a rather slow dog, but subsequent crossing with Foxhounds, Greyhounds and Bloodhounds finally produced the alert hunter it is today."

Wills Cigarettes brought out this '2nd series of 25' in 1915. They were beautiful paintings and I hve only one of this. The back has the following:
POINTER
"The English Pointer appears to have been first introduced into this country from Spain about 200 years ago--about the time when fire-arms came into use for fowling purposes. Since then the breed has been much improved, and during the seventies (before the present fashion of driving game came into vogue), English Pointers were at the height of their popularity-- as much as 150 guineas being paid for a fine Pointer called Drake. A good Pointer is compact and well-knit, with fairly large head and long broad nose. The tail should be pointed, and fairly straight. The colour varies from all black, or black, white and tan, to liver and white, and lemon and white".

In 1940 their was a paper shortage during the war and there was a long wait for them to be printed. A few were issued but they were scarce. Then in 1994 these cards put out by Players cigarettes originally, were re-issued under the title "Dogs Heads(Eire)-reprint of 1940". I have only one of the reprints. If you were to find an original it would be terribly expensive. The following is printed on the back of the card:
POINTER
"The Pointer which is believed to have come to Britain from Spain, has enjoyed favour as a shooting dog for a great many years. It is a fast, enduring dog with a very keen nose, and one of its earliest uses was to locate hares, which were then flushed and coursed by Greyhounds. Last century a Foxhound cross was introduced into Pointers to improved pace and stamina, and it raised a heated controversy among breeders, Some Pointers still occasionally show traces of it by hunting with a low head in the manner of a hound."

Players put these lovely paintings by artist Arthur Wardle on cards to be inserted in their small packages of cigarettes in 1931. The back of the card is as follows:
POINTER.
"The Pointer is of Spanish origin and was introduced into this country about the beginning of the 18th century. Since that date, however, sportsmen have succeeded in breeding distinctively English dogs, which for staying power, pace and nerve have left the old Spanish Pointers far behind. They have some Foxhound blood, but they are bigger dogs and more lightly built. The coat should be smooth and in colour a predominance of white is preferable. Black and white and the whole colours, black. liver and various shades of yellow, are also quite correct. Height: dogs about 24-26 in. Weight about 60 lb., bitches being rather smaller and weighing less."

Players "Dogs - Scenic Background" were put out in 1925. Beautiful paintings without a referral to an artist. The reverse side of this card has the following:
POINTER
"The ancestors of these fine sporting dogs were probably introduced from Spain about two hundred years ago, but by 1835 sportsmen had bred distinctively English dogs which for pace, nerve, and staying power left old Spanish Pointers far behind. Their Foxhound blood shows in their general shape, though in build they are lighter and better knit, and the coat is soft, white and spotted colouring being prefered. Pointers are especially useful for marking game in low cover. Height for big dogs 24 or 25 ins., with a weight of 60 lbs., bitches being rather smaller."

He is a strong dog and during a day's shooting he can cover sixty miles with ease. Pointers are usually white with black or liver markings and can hold their own in the show ring as well as in the field."

Peter Beigel is the artist on this nice headstudy put out Player & Sons in 1940. The cards fit in the small packges of 10 cigarettes. On the back:
POINTER
"In common with the Setters the Pointer is used to "set" or "point" game; that is, to indicate to the sportsman the position of game without disturbing it. The Pointer was introduced into England from Spain and Portugal in the early eighteenth century, but it was then a cumbersome dog, too heavy and slow for working with the gun on the rough moorlands. Judicious breeding has produced a much faster, stronger dog with good power of scent for the use of the sportsman of today. The Pointer's handsome coat is usually white combined with either black, liver, lemon or orange markings, but there are some all-black specimens."

Gallaher put out this nice card in a set of 48 issued in 1938, the pointer being no. 36 in the set. Printed on the back:
THE POINTER
"The Pointer was imported into England over two hundred years ago from Spain, where the breed had been popular with hunters for centuries. It is similarly built to the Foxhound but on finer lines for high-speed work. A Pointer at work is an interesting sight; on scenting the game the dog will remain perfectly still, looking as if it had been turned to stone, with tail straight out and one foot raised. Once the game has started to move, however the dog relaxes and goes forward again."

POINTER
is a sporting and hunting dog who gets his name from the way in which he locates the presence of birds--by standing stiffly toward the hidden bird with tail out behind him and head extended. POINTER
"The Pointer comes by his name honestly. He is a specialist and looks the part. Clean-limbed, lithe and muscular without being coarse, full to the brim of nervous energy and "hunt," put together for speed and endurance, courageous. Around the house he is clean and his disposition affectionate.

John Player & sons put out these wonderful headstudies by artist Arthur Wardle in 1940. There were 25 cards of different breeds in the set with the Pointer being no. 10. I have one of these in mint condition. The following shown on the reverse side of the card:
POINTERS
"It is thought that the English Pointer owes his origin to the importation into this country of some of the pointing dogs which have been known in Spain and Portugal for centuries. Its remarkable scenting powers and pace made the breed popular at one time as an aid to the coursing of hares with Greyhounds, but its sporting uses are now confined to the shooting of winged game. To improve the pace and stamina of the early Pointers, it is said that a Foxhound-cross was introduced. This served its purpose, but it tended to make the breed hunt with head hung towards the ground in the manner of a hound. Traces of this are occasionally seen to-day, but generally the modern Pointer is a fast-moving, enduring dog which can scent game at remarkable range."

On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
