Pekingese stamp from Ajman

A beautiful new stamp from Ajman issued in 2001.
Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Pekingese stamp from Amurskaya

This nifty stamp from Amurskaya has the unusual combination of a Longhaired Dachshund and a Pekingese. It was issued in 1999.
Beyond barter and shuttle trade, the best long-term economic prospects for Amurskaya territory appear to be farming, food processing and packaging, as well as timber, and mining. Amurskaya is located in Russia, in the south of the Far East. More than one-third of the population live in the rural area. Since 1933 the death rate is higher than the birth rate. Due to the negative natural increase and migration from the region the total population of Amurskaya is intensely decreasing.

Pekingese stamp from Benin

A lovely new stamp issued in 2002.
Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominant West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military Governments ended in 1972 with the rise to powere of Mathieu KEREKOU and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. A move to representative government began in 1989. Two years later, free elections ushered in former Prime Minister Nicephor SOGLO as presdent, marking the first successful transfer of power in Africa from a dictatorship to a democracy. KEREKOU was returned to power by elections held in 1996 and 2001, though some irregularities were alleged.
The climate is tropical, hot, humid in south; semiarid in north; mostly flat terrain with some hills and low mountains; they have some envronmental issues such as inadequate supplies of potable water, and poaching of wildlife. The official capital is Porto-Novo; Cotonou is the seat of government.

Pekingese stamp from Buriatia

The near collapse of the Russian economy in the last few years has provided a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate hard currency, many of the local Russian governments are issuing very attractive stamps in an effort to market them on the world market and not have to provide the associated postal service. This stamp from Buriatia is just such a lucky addition to the Pekingese collection.

Every time I see these stamps, I am reminded of a pair of monkeys, but none the less, they are definitely Pekingese. Pekingese stamp from Congo

This stamp was issued in 2002 by The Republic of Congo.
The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

Pekingese stamp from Dagestan

Dagestan is another local Russian government that now issues stamps. This attractive stamp was put out in 1999. It is not rare.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Pekingese stamp from Davaar

Speaking of local post offices, there are a number of islands off the shore of Scotland that issue their own stamps. They are mostly for the collector trade, but I understand that you can mail a letter with them from the island to the mainland. They cannot be used to send a letter from Scotland to the island, nor to mail outside of Scotland, but the are a great addition to a collection like this. This Davaar local was issued in 1984.

Pekingese stamp from Dominica

The Commonwealth of Dominica issued a series of dog stamps in 1994, probably in celebration of the Year of the Dog. Dominica is another island in the Caribbean Seas. It is hard to scan and is much more attractive in person.
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the island a colony in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence, Dominca's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female prime minister in the caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years. It is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, DC. The climate is tropical and the terrain has rugged mountains of volcanic origin. It is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which are protected by an extensive natural park system. The official language is English. The capital is Roseau.

Pekingese stamp from Gambia

Gambia issued the most unusual set of dog stamps in 1993. Each one had the dog of a person of Royalty on it. The Pekingese was chosen for one because it belonged to the Empress Ts'eu-Hi.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Pekingese stamp from Grenada

Grenada is also in the Caribbean. They have issued several sets of stamps both by themselves and in conjunction with the Grenadines, for instance below. This stamp was issued in 1997 as part of a larger set of dog portraits.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Pekingese stamp from Guyana

This stamp was issued in 1995 by Guyana as part of their set for the 1995 Singapore convention. That is what the little emblem in the corner indicates. It is unusual to have a black and white Pekingese on a stamp.
Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Pekingese stamp from Kara Kalpakia

Karakalpakia is another of the local Russian governments issuing stamps. This pair of puppies was put out in 1999.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Pekingese stamp from Sierra Leone

Like so many other countries, Sierra Leone in Africa issued a set of stamps on commemoration of the Year of the Dog in 1994.
Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. Pekingese stamp from St. Vincent & Grenadines

St. Vincent and the Grenadines issued a set of dog stamps in 1994 for the Year of the Dog too. It is great that so many commemoratives included the Pekingese.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Australian Terrier from 1998.

Pekingese stamp from Touva Pekingese stamp from Touva

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Pekingese shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Bapoha. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. (See sample at right) I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Pekingese image from the overprint, put out by Touva in 1999.
. It should remain easily available.
Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.
I don't have anything on Bapoha at this time except it is a local Russian government.

These unusual stamps were issued by the United Arab Emirate, Umm Al Qiwain clear back in 1972. They are unusual for two reasons. Pekingese stamp from Russia

Along with the collapse of the Russian economy came massive runaway inflation. Very quickly, the stamps that had been printed were no longer worth enough to mail a letter. As a temporary measure, many post offices took blocks of the nearly worthless stamps and overprinted them with a new image and value so that they could still function while the real stamps were being printed. The first group of these that I got, I had no idea just how rare they were. They were not produced for the world market and were issued for only a very short time. For this reason, they became instant collectors' items. The stamp above is one of those first ones printed. I do not expect to ever get more of it.

Pekingese Souvenir Sheets
Pekingese Souvenir Sheet from Gibraltar

A unique souvenir sheet from Gibralter commemorating the year of the dog, in 1994.
Near the southern tip of Spain a peninsula forms a finger of land that points to the coast of Africa, 14 miles (23 kilometers) away. That peninsula is Britain's crown colony of Gibraltar. It includes the famous Rock of Gibraltar, which stands at the western gateway to the Mediterranean. Since 1704 when the British captured it, Gibraltar has been a fortress. It is Great Britain's chief naval base on the route through the Suez Canal to the Far East. The peninsula is about 3 miles (5 kilometers) long and less than a mile wide. Its area is 2.25 square miles (5.8 square kilometers). The rock is mostly limestone with cliffs and sandy slopes. Its greatest height of 1,396 feet (426 meters) is reached near the southern end. The city of Gibraltar, mostly on level ground on the west of the rock, lies on the deep Bay of Gibraltar. The harbor is a port of call where ships take on fuel, stores, and water. Vast reservoirs for rainwater have been blasted out of solid rock, and artesian wells have been drilled in the rock's tunnels.

Pekingese Souvenir Sheet from Palau

Pekingese Souvenir Sheet from Palau After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of the Caroline Islands opted for independent status in 1978 rather than join the Federated States of Micronesia. A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year when the islands gained their independence.
The economy consists primarily of subsistence agriculture and fishing. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. The population enjoys a per capita income of twice that of he Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-run prospects for the tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific and the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
