Papillon stamp from Abkhazia

Our first stamp is one of our nicest. It comes from the local Russian state of Abkhazia. The break-up of the former Soviet Union has caused an economic crisis in the new local governments as well as the national government. In an effort to generate currency, they have started to put out topical stamps that would be of interest to the world for more than just mailing a letter. The dog world is a real winner in this market, since many of the stamps represent dogs. This is just such a stamp for the Papillon. It was issued in 1998. This is one of the few Papillon stamps with a black and white.

Papillon stamp from Altai

This is from another local Russian state of Altai. The darling Papillon makes a nice addition to the collection. It was issued in 2000.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.

Papillon stamp from Altai

The Republic of Bashkortostan lies in the South Ural Mountains bordering with Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic. In 1921 Bashkortostan was forced to become an official Autonomous Soviet Republic as a part of the Russian Federation. By 1937 Bashkortostan accepted the constitution of the USSR, in which the republic was declared a state. This status was a formality due to the absence of sovereign rights. In 1990, upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bashkortostan declared its state sovereignty. Its capital city is Ufa and the economy depends on agriculture, stockbreeding and some industry.

Papillon stamp from Calve Island

There are apparently several islands off the edge of Scotland that generate a portion of their income from issuing novel stamps. Calve Island is one of those. The set that contained this papillon was issued back in 1984. As far as I know they have not issued a dog stamp since. These are considered local stamps, so they can be used to mail a letter to the mainland, but cannot be used to mail a letter in Scotland itself.
Calve Island is an island off the edge of Scotland. There seem to be three of four of these whose major source of income is issuing topical stamps for sales around the world. This set that included the nice Dalmatian was issued in 1984.

Papillon stamp from Dagestan

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Papillon stamp from Gambia

Gambia in Africa put out this fascinating set in 1993. Each stamp was the image of a breed of dog and the ruler that owned it. This Papillon belonged to Louis XIII according to the stamp.
What a wonderful portrait of a deserving breed. The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Papillon stamp from Ghana

Believe it or not, this is not the funniest stamp in the set that was issued by Ghana in 1997. At first I did not like them, but with time, I am starting to appreciate their unique feeling and soft colors. It certainly deserves to be part of any complete Papillon set.
Ghana is a nation on the western side of Africa, surrounded by the Ivory Coast, Togoland and the Upper Volta.

Papillon stamp from Kar Kalpakia

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1998.

Papillon stamp from Mongolia Papillon stamp from Mongolia

These two very different stamps were both issued by Mongolia in Asia. The one on the left shows not only the headstudy, but the dogs playing with a red ball. It was put out in 1978 and is not always easy to find. The one on the right was issued in 1984 and shows the Papillon in his dog basket bed.
Mongolia is located in Northern Asia, between China and Russia. It is slightly smaller than Alaska. The climate is desert, large daily and seasonal temperature ranges. The Gobi Desert is located in the south-central region. Mongolia has dust storms, grassland and forest fires, drought, and "zud" which is harsh winter conditions. The people have limited natural fresh water resources in some areas. The capital is Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia achieved its independence from China July 11, 1921. The unemployment rate is 20%. Mongolia is totally landlocked, therefore economic activity traditionally has been based on agriculture and breeding of livestock.

Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Like most of the other republics, Mordovia has started issuing new postal stamps including this beautiful Papillon.

Papillon stamp from Antillen

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Maarten is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe. This lovely stamp was issued by the Netherlands-Antilles in 1993.

Papillon stamp from St. Vincent

The interesting thing about this nifty Papillon stamp is that it is labeled as a Pomeranian. I have found a couple of other misprints like this. One is an Irish Terrier that is labeled as an Irish Setter and one Basset Hound distinctly called a Dachshund. In spite of the wording, the stamps deserves to be in the Papillon collection.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Papillon from 1998.

Papillon stamp from Transkei

I understand that Transkei is the homeland where Nelson Mandella was born in South Africa. In 1993, they issued this stamp that was apparently drawn by Dennis Murphy.
Transkei, in South Africa, was one of ten territories assigned to the black majority population in the 1950s as part of the South African government's policy of apartheid, or racial segregation. In 1994 it was incorporated into the province of Eastern Cape. This stamp was issued in 1993 before that incorporation.

Papillon stamp from Umm al Qiwain

If this stamp looks fuzzy, it is because it is a 3-D hologram. It actually is a stamp, but is so thick that I have no idea how they made it stick to a letter. It was issued in 1972 by Umm al Qiwain, one of the United Arab Emirates, and up until about 10 years ago, they were still fairly common. Now they are approaching the endangered species list.

Papillon stamp from Palau

Papillon stamp from St. Vincent This is not really a souvenir sheet, but acutally considered a minisheet, since the individual stamps make up a scene, but can also stand alone. There is a detail of the Papillon on the left.
After three decades as part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific under US administration, this westernmost cluster of the Caroline Islands (Palau oen the islands) opted for independent status in 1978 rather than join the Federated States of Micronesia. A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year when the islands gained their independence.
The economy consists primarily of subsistence agriculture and fishing. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. The population enjoys a per capita income of twice that of he Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-run prospects for the tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific and the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries.

These two Souvenir Sheets are here simply for torture purposes. I don't have either of them available right now, although I have had copies in the past long enough to get the scans :-). They are issued by the Peoples' Republic of China and I don't have much information on them since they are not in the resource books. When available, they are usually about $12.95 each. Pretty neat, huh?

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
