This card was issued by John Player & Sons in 1931 to be put in with their
packets of 10 cigarettes. It is from a set called, "Dogs by Wardel -- Full
Length." On the back it says, "The Papillon or Butterfly Dog is one of the
more recent canine importations into England. About the middle of the 17th
centruy dogs of this breed were great favourites at the court of the Kings of
France. There are two varieties, the drop-eared and erect-eared. The white
blaze down the centre of the face, together with the prick ears, give the dog a
certain resemblance to a butterfly. Colours: brown, ruby, light brown, dark
yellow, black and white, tri-colour, white with coloured patches. Maximum
height: 12 in.; maximum weight: 12 lb., but the smaller the better." This card
comes both as a regular cigarette card and as a transfer that is an image
designed to be put on glass, so the writing is backwards.

Papillon Card 1(Transfer)... $5.95 each
This beautiful card is from Gallaher's Ltd. in 1938 as part of their Second
Series of Dogs. On the back it says, "The Papillon is one of the smallest of
dogs, and certainly one of the prettiest. His large prick ears, and his dainty
manners make his name a very appropriate one. The more normal form of his nose
and eyes as compared with the Pekingese, Pug-dog, Japanese or King Charles
Spaniel make him a welcome recruit to the ranks of toy dogs. He originates from
Spain, and may be related to the tiny Chihuahuas of Mexico"
Papillon Card 2(Gallaher Dogs 2nd Series, 1938)... $9.95 each
This card titled 'Our Puppies' was issued by Godfrey Phillips Ltd. in 1936 for inclusion in their
larger packets of 20 cigarettes. On the back it says, "On many Papillons the
ears stand out. Of Continental origin, the Papillon is a small, silky-coated
breed, with a wide variety of colour."
Papillon Card 3(Godfrey Phillips OUR PUPPIES, 1936)... $12.95 each
This card was issued by Godfrey Phillips Ltd. in 1936 for inclusion in their
packets of 10 cigarettes. On the back it says, "On many Papillons the ears
stand out like the wings of a butterfly, which gives the breed its name. Of
Continental origin, the Papillon is a small, silky-coated breed, with a wide
variety of colour."
Papillon Card 4(Godfrey Phillips OUR PUPPIES, 1936)... SOLD OUT
This larger card (about the size of a playing card also) was issued by National
Geographic as part of their "Dog Series" in 1970. They are not easy to find and
it is particularly nice that they included a Papillon in the set. On the back
it says, "The Papillon (say paa-pea-YON) is a kind of spaniel. But its ears
look different from those of most spaniels. Instead of drooping, they stick up
like butterfly wings. Papillon means "butterfly" in French. The Papillon is the
only toy (very small) dog that hunts game.
COAT - thick, silky, wavy hair.
COLOR - white with patches of black, brown, reddish-brown, or tan.
HEIGHT - 8-11 in (20-28 cm)
WEIGHT - 5-11 lb (2-5 kg)"

Papillon Playing Cards
Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were
from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how
old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly
a part of Papillon history.
These cards came as part of two different sets of dog cards, where different
numbers had different breeds.

Papillon Playing Card 2(right)... $4.95 each
This card was issued in the USA by Collector Card in about 1988. It is from a
set of cards entitled "Picture This". The card was produced as an educational
tool. It is the same size as a playing card
and looks very much like one, but on the back it says,
"Character
The Papillon is an affectionate, lively little dog. It is resilient, whelps
easily, is a good walker, and can adapt to extremes of climate. Its attractive
appearance and friendly nature make it the ideal family pet. But, like many toy
breeds, it has a tendency to be possessive towards its owners and often
resents visitors to the home.
Coat: Silky and long. Generally lying flat, but with a frill on the chest.
Colour is white with markings in a variety of shades. Blaze must be
well-defined.
Size: 2.5-5 kg

This wonderful cigar band was produced in Holland for Willem II cigars. They
produced an entire set of different dog breeds. The band is actually gold, but
it shows up as tan in the scan. It is really beautiful and deserves to be the
highlight of somebody's collection.
