Old English Sheepdog stamps from Afghanistan

A new issue from Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Ajman

Another new issue, this one from Ajman.
Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of sister islands that were required to combine together and become a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." They are a fascinating country with Antigua holding 60 percent of the land and 90 percent of the population. Barbuda is a coral island that does not rise much above sea level. In 1997, they issued a series of dog stamps consisting of two pages with 12 stamps each, one page of small breeds and one page of large breeds. This darling Old English was among the large breeds. It is not yet rare and should be available for a while.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Argentina

This stamp came from a set of 6 that had exquisite drawings issued in 1999 by Argentina. The illustrations are by artist Gustavo Deveze.
Argentina, Country in South America, occupying most of the southern half of the continent east of the Andes Mountains. It is the second largest country in South America after Brazil. It's capitol and largest city is Buenos Aires. Argentine consists of diverse terrain, stretching from the tropics in the north to the subpolar region in the south. In the middle of the country are the Pampas, vast fertile prairies that produce much of the country's agricultural wealth. Since the late 19th century, Argentina has exported large amounts of agricultural goods, including meat, wool and wheat. The country also has an extensive industrial sector. Argentia has had a volatile political history. Its most famous president Juan D. Peron was very popular with the working and lower classes and concentrated on developing the country's industrial sector during the 1940s and 1950s. However he polarized Argetnine Societ and was ousted by the military in 1955. The military controlled the Argentine Government at different times throut the nations history. The military stepped down in 1983. Argentina recommited itself to a democratic government at this time.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Bashkortostan Old English Sheepdog stamps from Bashkortistan

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Old English Sheepdog shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Udmurtia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. (shown to the right) Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued from Bashkortostan to replace the overprint.
We have hve been able to acquire a multitude of new stamps lately. Bashkortostan is one of these acquisitions. The Republic of Bashkortostan lies in the South Ural Mountains bordering with Tatarstan and the Udmurt Republic. In 1921 Bashkortostan was forced to become an official Autonomous Soviet Republic as a part of the Russian Federation. By 1937 Bashkortostan accepted the constitution of the USSR, in which the republic was declared a state. This status was a formality due to the absence of sovereign rights. In 1990,upon the collapse of the Soviet Union, Bashkortostan declared its state sovereignty.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Buriatia

The break-up of the Soviet Union is a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate currency without supplying the associated services, the new Russian States issue stamps that will be collected by people from around the world rather than mail letters. No matter what the reason, it is a win-win when we get such nice stamps as this one from Buriatia. They issued this puppy stamp in 1997.
Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Dagestan

Dagestan is another Russian state that has honored the Old English with a beautiful stamp, this one in 1996. This is from a set of six different breeds including some unusual ones like White German Shephards. This OES is exceptional but very difficult to find in stock.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Old English Sheepdog stamp from Scotland

There are a number of islands off the edge of Scotland that, from what I can tell, their only function is to issue topical stamps. Fortunately, they have put out some nice ones such as this Rotary International marked Old English in 1984. It is reasonably common.
Most of the islands around Scotland are privately owned and have the right to issue their own stamps. If a population lives on the island, the stamps are legal postage for sending mail to the main land. They are not of value for sending it outside of Scotland or back to the island.

Old English Sheepdog stamp from Gambia

I wasn't sure that I liked this stamp at first, but the more I look at it the more the soft peaches and grays, and playful image grow on me. It is an Old English Sheepdog and deserves to be included as a major part of any any collection of Old English Sheepdogs.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

This lovely stamp was issued by England in 1979. Just like their Kennel Club which does not have a country designation (it is simply THE Kennel Club) they don't find it necessary to put the country of origin on the stamp. The image of the queen is sufficient to know that it is issued by Great Britain. Not rare

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Grenada

The nation island of Grenada issued a set of 9 stamps in 1997. This personable OES was among that set. They are still available, but relatively expensive.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Guinea

The Republic of Equitorial Guinea issued a set of stamps in 1977 to commemorate specific breeds of dogs. This wonderful example is listed as a "Bobtail." These stamps were very common, but are becoming less available all the time.
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Guyana

Guyana issued this stamp in 1997.
Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Jabardino Balkaria

Actually this stamp is titled a Bergamsco Sheepdog and was issued by Kabardino-Balkariain 2001. For those of you who have one of this rare breed, you have probably located items listed in Old English Sheepdog items. The stamp is also rare and I have only one of these.
The Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria is a federal subject of the Russian Federation located in the northern Caucasus mountains, with plains in the northern part. The Kabardian lands have been under Russian protectorate since 1557. In 1739 Kabardia became independent and 1774 became part of the Russian empire. Balkaria was annexed in 1827. In 1944, Stalin accused the Balkars of collaborating with Nazi Germany and deported the entire population. The Territory was renamed the Kabardin ASSR until 1957, when the Balkar population was allowed to return and its name was restored.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Kalmyukia

This stamp from Kalmykia was issued in 2000.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Karakalpakia

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This happy stamp was issued in 2000.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia in the Pacific issued this lovely stamp in 1995. I don't have much other information on it other than the fact that the other three breeds were the West Highland White Terrier, the Welsh Springer Spaniel and the Irish Setter.
In 1525 Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi, now in Micronesia. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold its interests to Germany, except for Guam which became a US insular area. Japan took over during World War II and by the War's conclusion most infrastructure had been laid waste by bombing, and the islands and people had been exploited by the Japanese Military to the point of impoverishment. After the war, the United Nations set up a trust that was administered by the US. On July 12, 1978 the people voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Monaco

Each year Monaco puts out a dog stamp in honor of their International Dog Show. 1982 was the year for the Old English Sheepdog. The newer Monacos are easy to find, but those that are over 15 years old are more and more rare.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy. Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the House of Grimaldi). The Chief of State: Prince RAINIER III (since 9 May 1949); Heir Apparent Prince ALBERT Alexandre Louis Pierre, son of the Monarch (born 14 March 1958). There are no elections, the monarchy is hereditary. Monaco does not have an embassy in the US.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Nanjing

This cartoon Old English Sheepdog was issued in Nanjing China. I origianally bought the set because there was a cartoon Borzoi in it that I fell in love with. There were two sets and I only picked up one, thinking that I might get the other later. Well, I have never seen a set since. I have been told that these were not actually postage stamps, but an offering in match boxes, somewhat like the prizes in Cracker Jacks. Either way, this is the most unique piece in some collector's collection.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Netherland Antilles

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Maarten is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe. This stamp was issued by the Netherlands-Antilles in 1995.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Nevis

A new issue from Nevis.
St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was names after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from New Zealand

This darling stamp was issued by New Zealand on June 16, 1999. The cartoon drawing is sort of hard to see, but the Bulldog is on the right in front of the Old English Sheepdog, the Dalmatian and the Greyhound. They, and the Dachshund are after the fuzzy toy dog with the BIG bone. The writing says Hairy Maclary's Bone, which was a children's book written by Lynley Dodd having to do with sharing and friendship. It is shown with a backing because it was only issued as a self-adhesive stamp.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from Paraguay

Paraguay issued this lovely head study in 1986.
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.
Paragury is located in Central South America, northeast of Argentina. It is slightly smaller than California. It has a subtropical to temperate climate. The capital is Asuncion. Old English Sheepdog stamps from Somaliland

The Republic of Somaliland (North West of Somalia) situated on the tip of the Horn of Africa, was formed in 1991 after separating from southern Somalia. The people of Somaliland experienced more than three years of bitter civil war (1988-1991) resulting in the deaths of nearly 60,000 people, massisive displacement both internal and to other countries, and a near total destruction of infrastructure, communications systems, banking and public services.
Following a period of inter-clan conflict, the Somali people have settled internal disputes using traditional peace-building methods, and they have started to rehabilitate amd reconstruct their damaged country. A stable administration has been formed, with a smooth transition of leadership following the death of former President Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, in May 2002. Demobilisation of former militia fighters into a national police force and army has created an environment of security within national boundaries.

Old English Sheepdog stamps from St. Vincent

This stamp was issued in 1994 to commemorate the Year of the Dog. These are not particularly rare, but the happy attitude and love of life expression make it a fine example of Old English Sheepdog stamps to own. The set had twelve dog breeds on two different issues, put out by the Caribbean island nation of St. Vincent.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Old English Sheepdog in 1994.

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, or PayPal but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* We do our best to keep all stamps in stock and to remove any cards that are no longer available.

* We have a couple of copies of some of these cards, and since they are much more fun when you have a "set", we would be happy to give a discount for multiple purchases. This can make a set of interesting breed cards quite reasonable. Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
