Newfoundland stamp from Afghanistan

This lovely Landseer headstudy was issued by Afghanistan in 1998. The set included such diverse dogs as Borzoi, Bloodhound and Chow Chow.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Newfoundland stamp from
South Arabia

I have done a lot of research on this stamp, but am still confused on exactly what happened. Apparently the Kathiri State of Seiyun was formed in late 1966 and these issues were released after the National Liberation Front took control of the state 1 October 1967. There is at least one article that claims that some of these issues were used postally. The Federation of South Arabia issues were declared invalidate only in 1969 by the postal authorities of the People's Republic of South Arabia. But between 1966 and 1968, South Arabia issued some lovely stamps, many of them using paintings of the masters. This one is a Renoir called "Madame Charpentier et ses enfants." For all of the confusion, there is no doubt about the wonderful Landseer at the feet of the children.

Newfoundland stamp
from Bulgaria

There is nothing cuter than baby puppies and this one from Bulgaria is one of the nicest. It was issued in 1997 along with several other puppies. I am not sure if it is a Landseer, but it certainly appears that it might be.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Cards of the Landseer Newfoundland

Newfoundland card
from England
This next card was issued in 1931 by John Player & Sons from a painting by the famous artist Arthur Wardle. On the back it says, "There are two varieties of Newfoundlands, differing only in colour, the blacks, and the black and whites or Landseer Newfoundlands, so-called after this artist's famous picture, first exhibited in 1838 and now in the National Gallery. They are large, strong and active dogs, and have become famous for their courage and readiness in rescuing persons from drowning. The Newfoundland's head should be broad and massive, his coat flat and dense and of an oily nature, capable of resisting water. Height at shoulder: Dogs about 28 in., bitches 26 in. Weight: dogs 140-150 lb., bitches 110-120 lb."

Newfoundland card
from England
This card Was printed by Gallaher Ltd. to be inserted into packs of Gallaher's De Luxe Cigarettes in 1934. The back says, "The Newfoundland dog has more than one honour. It is probably the ancestor of the present St. Bernard, or at least the St. Bernards who were first introduced into England, and has become world-famous as a saver of life from drowning. It may be thought by the name, that the dog originally came from Newfoundland, but such is not the case, although early settlers introduced this breed for bear hunting and beasts of burden. In those days the dogs were also used for purposes of haulage, and were fed mainly on fish. The illustration shows one of the finest specimens of the breed as exhibited to-day, a big winner, owned by Mr. W. Johnson."

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
