Maltese Terrier
Tobacco, Tea and Playing Cards

This first card was issued by Gallaher's Ltd. in 1938 as part of their Second Series of Dogs. On the back it says, "The Maltese Terrier is a very old breed indeed, although it has never been extremely popular amongst "one-dog" owners in England. It is mentioned as far back as the Middle Ages, although Malta does not seem to have been the only place where it was found. It has a very profuse coat, but the puppies are born with smooth coats and they do not begin to grow longer ones until they are over a month old. When kept as an ordinary pet it is difficult to keep the coat unstained."

This wonderful old card is an actual photograph from Carraras issued in 1936 as part of their "Dogs and Friend" series. On the back it says, "Though no doubt exceeded in antiquity by certain oriental breeds, the Maltese is reckoned the oldest toy dog in Europe, as it dates back some centuries B.C. Their remarkable appearance should certainly make them an unmistakable breed, and they have changed little with the years. They are not necessarily white as shown here, but they should be self-coloured. The smaller the dog (down to 4-lb.) and the longer the hair, the better."
Maltese Terrier Card 2(Carreras Dogs and Friend, 1936)... $4.95 each

This wonderful card was issued in Australia by Golden Fleece in 1972 as part of their "Pedigreed Dogs" series. On the back it says, "No one is certain of the origin of the Maltese dog but the name goes back some 300 years. Maltese dogs were believed to be a Pomeranian type and ancient Greek vases exist where the dog is featured and called by name.
He grows to nine inches high, weighs three to eight pounds and is very strong for his size. A very happy and playful dog the Maltese makes the ideal house or flat pet."

This highly unusual card is a German Tobacco Card from Austria issued in 1952. The printing on the back is entirely in German.

Maltese Terrier Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Maltese Terrier history.

Maltese Terrier Cigar Bands

These cigar bands were a real treasure to find. They are shown slightly enlarged for details. The first two are from the Royal Flush cigars in Holland. I believe that they were used around pairs of cigars rather than just one, since they are so large. Most breeds don't have bands such as these. I have only the two shown.

These bands were issued by a Dutch company as well, but they have different names on them to go on different brands of their cigars. I have seven bands of five different colors all with the same center painting.

This interesting band is the only one like it that I have.
Maltese Terrier Cigar Band 4... $6.95 each

These darling bands are probably for cigarillos, since they are smaller than the others. I have three in different shades of red, all with the same portrait in the center.
Maltese Terrier Cigar Band 5... $4.95 each

This gorgeous band is even more beautiful than it looks in the scan since it is gold background rather than tan. It was issued for the Willem II cigars.
