LABRADOR (yellow)
This is not a cigarette card but a Tea card. The cards were enclosed singly in packages of Barbers Tea (established in 1797). The following is shown on the back of the card:
"This variety is well-known in the show ring but is not so much in demand in the field as the Black Labrador. The explanation for the yellow shade in a breed otherwise all black is probably the Chesapeake Bay Dogs (a yellow or sedge breed. The height of this variety of Labrador is 22 inches and weight is 65 lbs. The haed is a little less flat than the black variety. The coat is short, thick and without waves, the undercoat dense and woolly."

LABRADOR RETRIEVER
A great headstudy issued originally in 1940. Due to the paper shortage at that time very few were printed. Then in 1994 an authorized reproduction was issued by Imperial Publishing and enclosed in Players Cigarettes under the title 'Dogs Heads(Eire)- Reprint of 1940'. A fortunate printing for the collectors of the Labrador Retreiver. The following is shown on the back of the card:
"The Labrador is thought to have been introduced into England by Newfoundland fishermen early last century, and the Earl of Malmesbury (1778-1841) is believed to have been the breed's first owner in Britain. Perhaps the real impetus to the breed's popularity as a show dog and gundog came from the late Lord Knutsford who, when the Hon. A. Holland-Hibbert, established the famous "Munden" strain to which nearly all modern Labradors can be traced. These dogs are usually black in colour, but an attractive variation is shown on this card. The breed's working and show qualities have always been carefully preserved by breeders."

LABRADOR
The Molassine Co. of Greenwich, London issued these cards 'Dogs at Work' in 1970. They were enclosed in Vims-Pet. There were 25 cards in the series; the labrador being #24. Shown on the reverse:
"The dog pictured here is a yellow labrador as distinct from the black variety. It is understood to have come to this country in trading vessels from Labrador, where the seamen found a ready market for them as intelligent gun-dogs. The Labrador, is now becoming more of a show dog than a gun-dog, and fortunately more and more are trained as excellent guide dogs for the blind."

YELLOW LABRADOR
Players Cigarettes issued these lovely headstudies from paintings by artist Peter Beigel in 1940. The narrative on the back is as follows:
"For a long time the yellow puppies that naturally occurred in the litters of Black Labradors in England were destroyed, but in 1899 a Major Radcliffe mated two of these yellow puppies, and one of the restultant progeny was named Ben of Hyde. It was this yellow dog that played the vital part in the foundation of the Yellow Labrador as a separate breed, which was first exhibited in the National Dog Show in 1913. As one would expect it is similar in many respects to the ubiquitous Black Labrador. Its colour, which may vary from fox-red to cream, recommends it to exhibitors, and sportmen find it an efficient gundog."

LABRADOR RETRIEVER
This actual photograph of 'Champion Duffton Glen Angus' is from Australia. This card was issued by the Golden fleece Co. of Australia. It is called a 'Golden Fleece Swap Card' and was issued in 1972. A description is shown on the back of the card:
"The Labrador comes from Newfoundland where he was used by fishermen to retrieve their nets from the icy sea. He was used in England to retrieve fallen game and during the second world war was put to good use as a mine detector and search dog for people buried in bombed ruins.
Today, the Labrador is a guide dog for the blind people and is considered by experts as an outstanding choice for this job."

GOLDEN LABRADOR
Gallaher 'Dogs 2nd Series' was issued in 1938. The paintings are by artist Mabel Gear. This is card #12 in the series of 48. Shown on the back of the card:
"The Labrador is an old breed of Retriever, believed to be descended from Lesser Newfoundland and Black Pointers. They were formerly entirely black, but yellow puppies continually appeared in litters and these have been bred into the Golden and Yellow Labradors of to-day, which easily rival the blacks on the show bench. Labradors are splendid water dogs, possessed of excellent scenting powers, strongly built and very active. The coat is short and very thick, but not wavy."

Weeties issued these 'Favourite Dogs-New Zealand' in 1940. They were then enclosed in cereals Weeties, Crispies and Vitabrits. A nice narrative on the back:
"Usually recognised as the supreme type of gun dog, the Yellow Labrador is a strong and active dog with a short, Thick, dense coat; a coat which enables rain to run off the dog's back without wetting the skin. Apart from his excellent work in the field, the Yellow Labrador is a good housedog and excellent companion.

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, or PayPal. We try to keep all cards in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very reasonable prices. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
