Keeshond card from England

This nice headstudy was issued by John Player & Sons in 1940 as part of their series called "Dogs Heads from Paintings by Peter Biegel." On the back it says, "Keeshond. The dogs of the Spitz group, to which the Keeshond belongs, are all natives of the Northern Latitudes. The Keeshond has become much favoured in the Netherlands where it is used as a guard-dog on the barges that ply the inland waterways. It is known as the Wolfspitz in Germany, where it is quite a fancied breed. In England it has been exhibited at shows since 1905. The name Keeshond is Dutch in origin, and the dog itself was adopted as a mascot by a political faction in Holland during the 18th century. Its abundant coat is usually worf-grey, ash-grey or silver-grey in colour."

Keeshond card from England

This lovely card was issued by Gallaher, Ltd. in 1938 as part of their second series of Dogs. All of this series showed paintings of dogs with beautiful backgrounds. On the back it says, "Keeshond. A water-borne existence on the canals of Holland does not prevent the Dutch barge families from keeping dogs, which in fact have become the indispensable guardians of the craft. The true barge dog of Holland is the Keeshond, shown here, although other breeds, notably the tiny Schipperke, are used for this purpose. He is a very pleasing animal, and though not yet a familiar sight in this country, is found in increasing numbers at exhibitions.

Keeshond Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Keeshound history.
