Stamps of
Irish Water Spaniels

The Irish Water Spaniel does not have a lot of stamps, but the ones that it does have are most impressive and attractive.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Afghanistan

This stamp was put out in 2000.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Ingushetia

This stamp was issued by a local Russian State, Ingushetia.
I always love to see new Irish Water Spaniels and they seem to pop up in the most unusual places.
Ingushetia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. It was part of a joint Chechen-Ingush autonomous republic from 1936 until 1991, when Chechnya declared independence and the Ingush separated from the republic.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Karakalpkia Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Udmurtia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Irish Water Spaniel shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Udmurtia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. The stamp on the left was ultimately issued by Karaklapakia with the Irish Water Spaniel image from the overprint from Udmurtia
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Irish Water Spaniel overprint.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Loas

This stamp from Laos in 1986. I have learned to like the stylized effect that this set shows. Years ago, this was easily available, but it is becoming rarer with time.
Laos is located in southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam. Burma, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Vietnam all border Laos. Laos is slightly larger than Utah. The climate is tropical monsoon. Laos is a Communist state. They gained their independence from France on July 19, 1949. The government of Laos - one of the few remaining official Communist states - began decentralizing control and encouraging private enterprise in 1986. Laos is the world's third-largest illicit opium producer. It has a population of 5,777,180.

Souvenir Sheets of
Irish Water Spaniels

Irish Water Spaniel spouvenir sheetMozambique

Irish Water Spaniel spouvenir sheetMozambique A magnificent souvenir sheet from Mozambique featuring some of the breeds doing what they were bred for. Lucky we are, to have the Irish Water Spaniel shown in detail to the right.
Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

Cards of
Irish Water Spaniels

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Angola

This card was issued by John Player and Sons was issued in 1994 as a reprint of the original from 1914. On the back it says, "Irish Water Spaniel. Many shooting men maintain that the Irish Water Spaniel is the finest rough-shooting and wild-fowling breed in existence. The watertight curls and the dash and courage, typical of all Irish breeds make this Spaniel impervious to icy water and punishing cover. The breed first came into prominence through a Justin McCarthy, who had a famous dog, Boatswain whose progeny were sent all over Ireland and some to England. Early Irish Water Spaniels were of two types (known as Northern or Southern McCarthy's strain), but only the latter has survived. The breed has considerably more supporters than its public appearances would suggest.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Angola

This card was issued in 1938 by Gallaher to be put in their packets of 10 cigarettes. On the back it says, "The Irish Water Spaniel. Thought by some to be an ancestor of the French Poodle (see No. 2 of this series) which it somewhat resembles, the Irish Water Spaniel, as its name implies, originated in Ireland. The old type of this dog was curly-coated but lower to the ground; and it is stated that a Pointer (see No. 36 of this series) was used to improve the breed -- a theory which seems to be proved on examination of the face. Although there are many of these dogs in Ireland they are exceedingly rare in England.

Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Angola

This is a really neat headstudy of an Irish Water Spaniel issued by Player and Sons in 1993 titled 'Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940'. These cards were intended to be issued by John Player in 1940 but a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this. However, we do now have the reprints issued in 1993. On the back of the card is printed the following: "Many shooting men maintain that the the Irish Water Spaniel is the finest rough-shooting and wild-fowling breed in existence. The water tight curls and the dash and courage, typical of all Irish breeds, make this spaniel impervious to icy water and punishing cover. Irish Water Spaniel stamp from Angola

Another neat headstudy of an Irish Water Spaniel issued by Player and Sons this time in 1929. The artist is Arthur Wardle, famous for etchings of dog breeds. On the back of the card is printed the following: "This fine breed is at least a thousand years old, for the Irish Water Spaniel is mentioned in a code of Welsh Laws of the 10th century. Dr. Cains, the well-known old writer on dogs, describes how he used the Water Spaniel to bring boulles and arrowes out of the water. About a hundred years ago the breed was revived and ultimately brought to perfection by Mr. Justin McCarthy, whose great dog Boatswain played a great part in the revival of this breed. Dogs are about 21-23 in. at shoulder, bitches 20-22 in."

Irish Water Spaniel Card from Erie Ireland

Eire (in the Irish Language, translated as Ireland)is the name given in Article 4 of the 1937 Irish Constitution to the 26-county Irish state that was created under the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty and which has been known between 1922 and and 1937 as the Irish Free State. The name Eire is the nominative form in modern Irish Gaelic of the name for the goddess Eriu, a mythical figure who helped the Gaels conquer Ireland. Since 1949, the term Republic of Ireland has generally been used in preference to Eire, to clarify that the state rather than the whole island is under discussion. The climate has mild winters, cool summers, consistently humid; overcast about half the time. The capitol of Ireland is Dublin.
