This photo is No. 47 in a series of 50 issued in 1936 by Carreras titled "Dogs & Friend". The photo is described as follows, on the back of the card, by LADY KITTY RITSON. "Of all the gun-dog breeds, perhaps the Irish Setter is the best-looking, with its beautiful red coat and feathered tail. Shooting-men are not quite as enthusiastic over its performances, as it is supposed to be slightly headstrong compared with other breeds of gun-dogs. However, it has crept more and more into favour during the last few years. It is not always entirely reliable in temperament, owing, perhaps, to being very highly strung, but it is not a fighter and is a grand dog with horses."

Artist Arthur Wardle painted this lovely head study and it was issued by Players originally in 1940. However, due to the paper shortage very few were printed. Fortunately for you collectors these same cards were reprinted in 1994. The title of this series of 50 is "Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940". The following description appears on the back of the card. "Of the breeds from which the Irish Setter originated very little is known, for there have been red Setters in Ireland for centuries, and a red-and-white variety, from which self reds may have descended, is bred and occasionally exhibited at Irish shows. With its dash and endless energy, the Irish Setter is well adapted for work on extensive Irish shoots. In England the breed is largely a show dog, and there is a tendency for breeders there to split up into two factions, the one supporting shows and the other field trials."
I have only two of the reprints available. Don't miss this chance to get this lovely reprint.

Pattreiouex "Dogs" photos were issued in 1939 and were enclosed in Senior Service Cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card. "The Irish Setter is beautiful, brainy and affectionate, but needs an immense amount of exercise.
GENERAL HINTS
SELECTING A PUP. Puppies usually grow evenly up to two months old, after which they grow in patches. A pup which, for his breed, is too long in the back at two months will have fault when fully grown, but too long a back at four months may mean nothing. Therefore try to select your pup at two months, even if he is delivered to you later."

The Molassine Co. Ltd., London, (Vim's Pet Foods) issued these cards in 1970 titled "Dogs at Work". The description on the back of the card follows: "This noble and beautiful dog was probably produced by crossing the English and Gordon Setter with the Pointer, a highly sensitive and high spirited dog, very fast and enthusiastic, the Irish Setter made a reputation for himself in the 1800s as a highly capable gun-dog. On account of his beauty, he was given less opportunity to hunt, until today he is almost exclusively a show contender."

"JILL"
(Irish Setter)
Artist Lucy Dawson completed this drawing and described 'JILL' on the back of the card. Will's Cigarettes issued these cards "Puppies by Dawson" originally in 1940. If you could find an original today they would sell for $400.00. I have this 'authorized reproduction' issued in 1990. The printing on the back is as follows: "I had tried previously to draw "Jill", but without success, as she only takes orders from her mistress. Her mistress, however, came with her and all went well. A little coaxing did it, and I think there was a biscuit somewhere which interested her. A charming little lady, lively as all healthy puppies should be, but extremely difficult to catch."

Description on the back of the card is as follows: "The Irish Setter, or Irish Red Setter as he is sometimes called, has been in existence for some centuries. At Field Trials he has competed successfully with some of the best Pointers and Setters of other varieties, and is very popular both on the show bench and as a companion. His coat should be of moderate length, straight, flat hair being most highly valued. Colour: rich golden chestnut with no trace whatever of black. A little white on chest, throat, or toes, or a small star on the forehead is permissible. Height: 22 in. Weight: 65 lb., bitches a little less."

Players issued this lovely headstudy in 1929. The artist is Arthur Wardle. The following is printed on the back of the card: "The rich golden chestnut colour of the Irish Setter is very beautiful, and though he is perhaps lighter in build, more finely drawn, and of more nervous temperament than some other varieties, he is when well trained and intelligently handled, as fast and keen nosed as other Setters. In Ireland he is highly valued as a field and hunting dog, and at field trials has competed successfully with some of the best Pointers from England and Scotland. The coat is moderate length, straight flat hair being most highly valued. Height 22 ins."

This nice head study was painted by Peter Biegel and issued by Players in 1940. This series of 50 cards was titled "Dogs Heads by Biegel". The following is printed on the back of the card. "With its origins lost in the unrecorded sporting history of its native Ireland, the ancestry of the Irish Setter (or Red Setter) is very vague. It is safe to say, however, that a red and white setter was known to have existed in Ireland for many years before the breed was introduced into England in the early 19th century. Although pure red is the desired colour nowadays, faint white markings are permissible. The Irish Setter compares favourably with the Gordon and English Setters, and, although at one time it was reputed to be wild and unreliable, proper training has remedied this without destroying its spirited nature."

Golden Fleece Australia "Pedigree Dogs" were issued in 1972. This is card No. 18 of the 36 cards to make a complete set. Description follows on the back of the card. "The Irish Setter with its red silky coat was once used as a "gun-dog" only. Because of the breed's beauty, the Irish Setter has today become more popular as a pet and show dog. He is a "one-man" dog with a nose equal in sharpness to any other pointing breed which enables him to find game easily. Always affectionate, the Irish Setter has a good sense of property rights but very seldom becomes vicious."

This beautiful picture is from the "Dogs A Series" by Gallaher and issued in 1936. The following description is printed on the back: "The Irish Setter is one of the three Setter types and a very popular gun dog. In build it is similar to the English Setter, but its beautiful chestnut colouring makes it less conspicuous on a shoot as it blends into the background of moorland or gorse. It is a sensitive animal, the uninitiated may almost think it nervous, but so highly intelligent that it can be trained to do almost anything. An Irish Setter in good coat, with good tail and feathering, makes a striking picture when at work."

The 25 paintings for this series were specially executed by Angela Mulliner and form a unique collection. Players issued these cards in 1979 titled "GRANDEE-Top Dogs Collection". A wonderful description is printed on the back of the card. "Often called the "Red Setter" because of its striking colour, the breed's origins are rather obscure. It was in existence in Ireland in the nineteenth century when a sporting writer told how the breed was preferred to any other Setter or Pointer. In those days most were red and white. The present day standard calls for a whole, rich chestnut colour but red and white ones are still bred in Ireland. Very handsome, racy looking dogs with silky coats and feathered tails, they always catch the eye. Large classes are seen in the show ring where they are probably the most popular of the setter breeds. The field trial strain usually have excellent noses and are wide rangers, but they do have the reputation of being slightly unpredictable. Not always easy to train, a bit headstrong but full of Irish charm they can, at times, be exasperating--but never dull--and always beautiful."

Hignett Bros. & Co. issued these lovely cards in 1936 titled simply "Dogs". The description on the back of the card follows. "This dashing enduring breed is a native of Ireland, where it was used as a gun-dog for centuries before the time of dog shows. The early Setters were red and white, and in Ireland some of this variety is, however, wholly red, the colour being established by skilful selective breeding. The Irish is the most popular show Setter, but in the field English Setters are more numerous."

John Player & Sons issued a series of 25 cards from paintings by Arthur Wardle titled "Wardle Dogs-A Series-Eire" in 1927. A nice description is printed on the back of the card. " Probably a descendant of the old "setting" Spaniels, the Irish Setter owes its development as a gundog to Irish sportsmen who wanted a dog with great dash and endurance and a good nose. The early Setters were either all red or red-and-white in colour, and even to-day the latter variety is still bred and occasionally exhibited in Ireland. In this country the Irish Setter has achieved its greatest popularity as a show dog. Several breeders confine their activities to the production of field dogs, and are inclined to doubt the working abilities of many of the show bench specimens, on the grounds that they are too elegant to be robust and too highly-strung to be tractable in the field. However, the Irish Setter Field Trial Association and the Ulster Irish Red Setter Club help to keep the breed on a stable base by annually promoting field trials for it."

This card was issued by Players and enclosed in Navy Cut Cigarettes. This is card No. 9 in a series of 12 titled "Dogs-Scenic Background" in 1924. The following is printed on the back of the card: "The rich golden chestnut colour of the Irish Setter is very beautiful, and though he is perhaps lighter in build, more finely drawn, and of more nervous temperament than some other varieties, he is when well trained and intelligently handled as fast and keen-nosed as other Setters. In Ireland he is highly valued as a field and hunting dog, and at field trials has competed successfully with some of the best Setters from England and Scotland. The coat is of moderate length, straight flat hair being most highly valued. In leading essentials he is similar to his English brother, but his eyes are lighter and show less "haw", and his expression, like that of the Irish Water Spaniel and the Irish Terrier, is different to any English breed. In fact it is a characteristic purely Irish expression. Height about 22 inches. Weight 55 to 60 lbs."

Weeties "Favourite Dogs-New Zealand" were issued in 1940. This card is No. 1 in a series of 32. The Irish Setter is described on the back of the card. "There is no more beautiful dog than the typical "Red Irishman," and he is certainly the most elegant and athletic of all dogs used when shooting. He is a thorough gentleman, and as a loyal companion has few equals. His charming nature, handsomeness and utility as a sporting dog, has made him one of the most popular breeds.

W.D.& H.O. Wills issued "Dogs 2nd Series" in 1915. This is the No.1 card in this series of 25. A description on the back of the card follows: "In general appearance this variety of Setter differs but little from its English cousin, the chief distinction being the rich golden chestnut colour of its coat. It is naturally in its native country that the Irish Setter is most highly esteemed as a sporting dog, and very few of the other varieties of the Setters are to be seen in the Emerald Isle. At the field trails, arranged by the Irish Setter Club, dogs of this breed have successfully held their own against the best Pointers from England and Scotland. A good Irish Setter is rather higher on the leg than the English variety; he has a narrow skull, a glossy coat, feathered legs, tail of moderate length, ears set low and lying back, and lustrous eyes. His colour should be a rich tawny, golden brown with no trace of black. White markings are permissible on face and throat."

United Kingdom, constitutional monarchy in northwestern Europe, officially the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is the largest island in the cluster of islands, or archipelago, known as the British Isles. England is the largest and most populous division of the island of Great Britain, making up the south and east. The capital of the United Kingdom is the city of London, situated near the southeaster tip of England. The term England should never be used to describe Britain, because England is only one part of the island. The United Kingdom is a small nation, roughly the size of Colorado or Oregon. The climate, in general, is mild, chilly, and often wet. Rain or overcast skies can be expected for up to 300 days per year. In general, British subjects belong to one of the more affluent states of Europe and enjoy a high standard of living compared to the rest of the world. Britain has been important in the arts throughout modern times.

On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
