Carreras issued this set of cards titled "Dogs & Friend" in 1936. Lady Kitty Ritson describes the German Shepherd (Alsatian) on the back of the card as follows: "The Alsatian has had to live through many periods of depressions, as at one time there was a Press campaign launched against him, but he has outlived all the attacks of his detractors and is still one of the most popular breeds. There is absolutely no wolf-blood in the Alsatian, as he is a sheep-dog, and the present breed was formed by crossing the North and the South German sheep-dog. He is extremely loyal and very devoted to children, and many parents in America keep one as a guard."

Players "Dogs Heads(Eire)-Reprint of 1940 were issued in 1993. This is an authorized reproduction by Imperial Publishing, first published in 1940. The following is printed on the back of the card: "This breed created the greatest canine scare of modern times, and it was accused, very often wrongly, of every crime of which a dog is capable. Its name, then Alsatian Wolfdog, and the exaggerated publicity given to the wolf cross used so long ago as to be inactive now, produced a strong feeling against the breed. The English Kennel Club is the only canine ruling body which clings to the name Alsatian, though it now puts the correct name in parenthesis. On the Continent the breed is still used as a guardian of flocks. With all who like their dogs to be reluctant to make friends quickly with strangers, the Alsatian will always be popular.

"SALLY"

This card is an authorized reproduction of "Puppies by Dawson - Reprint of 1940", issued by Wills in 1990. The drawing and the narrative on the back of the card are by Lucy Dawson. "Sally" was of a friendly disposition but very nervous. Sitting still was not in her line, but biscuits certainly were, and a little persuasion did the rest. "Sally" was interested in Art, but I felt that what she really wanted was to try the flavour of the paper. In puppy days Alsatians really must appeal to everyone!"

The following is printed on the back of the card: "The German Shepherd Dog was used extensively by the French and German armies during the 1914-18 War. It was subsequently introduced into England and renamed the Alsatian. It has since become very popular, being strong, intelligent and alert. These qualities were again used to great effect in the Second World War, when the Alsatian was employed for such diverse purposes as guard duties and mine detecting. It is as a guide dog for the blind that the Alsatian excels. It has also reached stardom in the film world. As little preparation is required for showing, the Alsatian is consequently popular with exhibitors."

It is in fact a first rate watch-dog and guard--is very intelligent, is easily trained and can track as efficiently as a Bloodhound. H. M. Players "Top Dogs - Grandee" were produced and distributed by Players in 1979. The following appears on the back of the card: "Until recently better known in Britain as the Alsatian, few breeds are more widely recognised. Descendants of herding dogs thay are still used for working sheep in their native country. The Germans, realising the value of dogs in war had over 6,000, mostly German Shepherds, trained prior to the 1914 war. Returning Servicemen, impressed by their abilites, brought many home to Britain and America. Their intelligence and trainability were soon recognised and they quickly achieved amazing popularity. Strong, short coated dogs with erect ears and watchful eyes they make excellent guards and companions if properly trained and exercised. Used successfully all over the World with Police Forces, Customs, Armed Services and Prison Services they also act as Guide Dogs for the Blind. Many compete in Obedience and Working Trials. A good German Shepherd will tackle any task of which a dog is capable-- and usually make a good job of it. Height 22-26 inches."

The following is printed on the back of the card: "The Alsatian is generally known as the German Sheepdog or Wolfdog. The dog may be termed a super guard, and although in the past crossings were made with the wolf, the continual exaggeration of the danger of such dogs is a myth, as it would be far better for the owners of such dogs to concentrate on advertising the very characteristics which are so much in the dog's favour. As a dog, few are smarter, if well bred, and few more intelligent. The dog illustrated is one of the finest show specimens of to-day, and is owned by Miss J. Workman. German Shepherd Game Card

This beautiful card is from a series of 52 cards in a game called The Black Cat Greyhound racing game issued by Carreras in 1926. They are rare and hard to come by. I have seen only three of them in different breeds. This is a must for your collection.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested. Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these cards at very reasonable prices. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
