The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes
in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on
all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the
two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal,
a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its
Independence on February 18, 1965.

Another new souvenir sheet is this one issued by Sierra Leone in 2000.
To the right is the detail of the Greyhound running in the bottom left
corner.

Somalia, also called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of
Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its
independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a
lasting presence in the area.

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence
by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for
the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular
clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for
the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of
this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities
of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

The Greyhound in the left picture is the detail of the middle
stamp in the first row of the souvenir sheet. It comes from the portrait of James
Stuart, Duke of Lennox and Richmond done c. 1634.

This souvenir sheet was issued by St Vincent and the Grenadines in 2000 to
commemorate the Prado Museum in Spain. The painting is The Judgement of Solomon
by Peter Paul Rubens. The Greyhound is in the lower center. Notice the dark
dog in the lower right corner that resembles a Bernese Mountain Dog.

It was issued by the Republic of China
and you have to look close to see the Sighthound in the bottom right hand
corner of the right stamp.
There are so many nice parts to this souvenir sheet that I have pulled some enlargements for your enjoyment. Since this is not listed as a "dog stamp", I have had to go through other sources to obtain one. I believe that this was issued in 1998 as "Kuan-Tao Painting of Emperor Shih-Tzu on Hunt" If you are interested, I will try to find another one.
