Greyhound dog stamp from Ajman
I wanted to start this page with a sample of how Greyhounds are used in art. You will find that a lot of Greyhound stamps are not listed in dog sources, because the stamps are considered to be art work, not dog specific. These beautiful examples were issued in 1968. The one on the left is a painting by Jan Wildens entitled "Retour del la Chasse", or Return from the Chase. The original of the painting is in Dresde. The one on the right is a painting by Velasquez of Don Ferdinando D'Autriche and the original is in the Prado. To the left is one of the nicest souvenir sheets that we have. It shows the same two stamps, but as a sheet, it is worth 5 rls instead of the 2 each that the stamps above are valued at.

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Greyhound dog stamp from Bulgaria

Bulgaria's new offering is not so much for the dog as for the prey. The Greyhound image is relagated to the bottom silouhette. Still, it tells a unique part of our Greyhound experience.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Greyhound dog stamp from Buriatia Greyhound dog stamp from Chuvashia

The former Soviet Union has become a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. As the economy continues to decline, the local governments are looking for novel ways of generating income without enlarging the government payroll. The issuing of stamps that are collected for their beauty rather than to mail a letter is a happy compromise. There are several new Greyhound stamps and this one on the left from the Republic Buriatia is certainly a nice one to start with. It was issued in 1999. The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Greyhound shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Chuvashia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. The stamp on the left was ultimately issued by Buriatia with the Greyhound image from the overprint from Chuvashia.

The terrain is mostly low, flat plains; mountains in southwest and north. The natural hazards are the monsoonal rains; flooding; occasional droughts. Ethnic groups nsist of Khmer 90%, Vietnamese 5%, Chinese 1%, and others 4%. The languages are the official Khmer 95%, French and English. Greyhound Set from China

Greyhound dog stamp from China Greyhound dog stamp from China

This incredible set is easily one of the loveliest collections that I have ever enjoyed. They are issued by the Republic of China (Taiwan) and the original set includes nine Sighthound stamps (the other three are Salukis) and a Tibetian Mastiff, surprisingly enough! This is probably the most expensive dog production that I have come across. These paintings were presented as a gift to the emperor, note the Imperial Seals. These are the works of the Italian Jesuit Priest Guiseppe Castiglione who resided in the forbidden city during the Qing Dynasty. His oil paintings of Chinese arts are unique and he has no successor, most of his works are in museums. If you are interested in a set, then let me know and I can notify you if I get any new ones in. The price would be about $15.00 each stamp when you buy all six.

Greyhound dog stamp from Czechoslavakia

This stamp from Czechoslovakia is also not really new, having been issued in 1990. The set is not usually hard to find, but because they are collected by three different breed affectionatos, this specific stamp is harder and harder to come by.
The Czech Republic is a landlocked republic in Central Europe, comprosing the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and Silesia. The new state a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945. From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5% are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population. Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembles that of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most economically developed regions of Europe.

Greyhound dog stamp from Dominica

This headstudy stamp is from the island Commonwealth of Dominica and was issued to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Dog in 1994. It is part of a set of 4 that included also the Pekenese, the Beagle and the Irish Setter.
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the island a colony in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence, Dominca's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female prime minister in the caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years. It is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, DC. The climate is tropical and the terrain has rugged mountains of volcanic origin. It is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which are protected by an extensive natural park system. The official language is English. The capital is Roseau.

This stamp is from Scotland (the island of Gairsay) I have been told that there are at least three sparcely inhabited islands off the coast of Great Britain that issue stamps for income production. They can be used to mail letters to the mainland, but cannot be used to mail letters around Scotland, to other countries or even back to the island. Gairsay, Staffa and Pabay are some of those islands.

Hakasia is another of the local states in Russia issuing new collectable stamps and this Greyhound is a lovely example of how we all win. It was issued in 1998 and should remain available for some time.

Greyhound dog stamp from Ivory Coast

This stamp was put out in 2003.
Close ties to France since independence in 1960, development of cocoa Production for export, and foreign investment made Cote d’lvoire one of the most prosperous states of tropical African states, but did not protect it from political turmoil. On 25 December 1999, a military coup – the first ever in Cote d’Ivoire’s history – overthrew the government led by President Henri Konan BEDIE. Junta leader Robert GUEI held elections in late 2000, but excluded prominent opposition leader Alassane OUATTARA, blatantly rigged the polling results, and declared himself winner. Popular protest runner-up Laurent GBAGBO into power/ GBAGBO spent his first two years in office trying To consolidate power to strengthen his weak mandate, but he was unable to Appease his opponents, who launched a failed coup attempt in September 2002. Rebel forces claimed the northern half of the country and in January 2003 were Granted ministerial positions in a unity government. Several thousand French And West African troops remain in Cote d’lvoire to maintain peace and help Implement the peace accords. The capital is Abidjan. The climate is warm, Humid, transitional from equatorial to tropical. Forty-five percent of the popultion Is under age fifteen.

Greyhound dog stamp from Kara Kalpakia

This Greyhound stamp was issued in 1999 by Kara Kalpakia, a part of the former Soviet Union.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Greyhound dog stamp from San Marino

This stamp comes from San Marino in the 1960's. The set included, in addition to the Greyhound, a Borzoi, a Marino shephard, a Pointer and a Great Dane. Their availability seems to run in cycles.
San Marino is a republic in southern Europe, an enclave in northern Italy, east of Florence. San Marino is one of the smallest republics in the world, covering about 24 square miles. Greyhound dog stamp from Kyrgyzstan

This time, the new stamp is from South Ossetia in Russia. I found some very interesting information when searching for a history of Ossettia. It lies near the Black Sea in the Russian region of Georgia. Today’s 700,000 North and South Ossettians are herdsmen and horsemen, probably descended from the Scythian warrior nomads of ancient Greek times.
Like the first settlers of Yorkshire they use the word ‘Don’ for river and, like the people of Ossett, they chose the fleece as an emblem. A fleece also appears at the centre of Ossett's coat of arms.
Is there a connection? Some versions of the Greek legend of Jason and the Argonauts tell us that on his long homeward voyage Jason took the Golden Fleece by river journey from the Black Sea to the North Sea – a route well known to the Vikings who are thought to have founded Ossett. In addition, Ossett is a Viking place name which may mean 'Osla's seat' or 'ridge camp'. Was Ossettia founded by Vikings? Perhaps. In the meantime, the local government of both North Ossettia and South Ossettia have issued a few fascinating stamps, including this lovely Greyhound.

Greyhound dog stamp from Stroma

The stamps from the local Scottish island of Stroma were issued in 1969, 70 and 71, each with different overprints. The one shown shows the fifth anniversary of Winston Churchill's death in 1970. I looked up Stroma on the internet and found this intriguing introduction: "Driving along the far north coast of Scotland, the question one is asked more than most from visitors is "What Island is that?", as they point to the pretty little island two miles off the coast. This then will more often that not lead to a long discussion on the history of Stroma, a once thriving Scottish community that is today left to the sheep and cattle." It sounds like an interesting story.

Greyhound dog stamp from Tadjikistan

This stamp was issued in 1999.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Greyhound dog stamp from Touva

Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the perma frost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

Turks and Caicos are islands in the Caribbean. The Turks & Caicos Islands, part of the British West Indies, are a dependency of Great Britain and are located at the SE end of the Bahama Islands. Of about 50 Islands, only six are inhabited. The estimated population, in 1999, was just under 17,000.
Last year, they issued a set of dog stamps with breeds chosen to represent the work that they do. Obviously, Greyhounds were chosen for "racing". Many of the other job descriptions were a little more confusing, such as Basenji as "hearing ear" dogs. These should remain readily available.

Greyhound dog stamp from Uganda

Our next offering is from Uganda in Africa. This is a particularly lovely image of a working Greyhound. Since they are so new, it is hard to tell how available they will be, but for the moment, they are reasonably easy to get.
Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962. The dictorial regime of Idi AMIN (1971-1979) was responsible for the deaths of some 300,000 opponents; Guerilla war and human rights abuses under Milton OBOTE (1980-85) claimed another 100,000 lives. During the 1990's the government promulgated non-party presidential and legislative elections. Uganda is located in eastern Africa, west of Kenya. The climate is tropical; generally rainy with two dry seasons (December-February, June to August). Uganda is landlocked; fertile, well-watered country with many lakes and rivers. English is the official Language, taught in grade schools. The capital is Kampala. Coffee is the major export crop and accounts for the bulk of export revenues.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
