not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post
Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with
a new image and a new value. The Great Pyrnees shown above
is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Askamayana. These stamps come in a
set of five different colored stamps, all with the same overprint as shown in the detail
on the right. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would
remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these
to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints
they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world
market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be
printed. Unfortunately I do not have the original stamp
that replaced the overprint.

This nice souvenir sheet was issued by Liberia. The headstudy at the right is

administered as part of the British dependency of Saint Helena.
Tristan, the largest and only permanently inhabited island
(with a population of about 300), has a volcano thought to be extinct
until 1961, when an eruption occurred. Most of the inhabitants are
descendants of British soldiers who were stationed on Tristan da Cunha
during the captivity of Napoleon on Saint Helena. All inhabitants were
evacuated following the volcanic
eruption in 1961, but returned in 1963. This wonderful minisheet was
produced in 1980 of various nursery rhymes. The stamp in the upper
right is of Little Jack Horner who sat in a corner eating his Christmas
pie. The lovely companion with him is his Great Pyrenees.

more than 80 islands in the South Pacific Ocean, about three-quarters of the way
from Hawaii to Australia. It was first visited by the Portuguese in 1606. It was
charted and named New Hebrides by James Cook in 1774, and was finally granted
independence as the Republic of Vanuatu in 1980. This wonderful Christmas Souvenir
Sheet was issued in 1982. The shepherd dog in the lower left corner is probably
a Great Pyrenees. What a wonderful addition to any Pyrenees collection.

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia.
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence
by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for
the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular
clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for
the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of
this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities
of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
