These cards are not Cigarette cards. They are known
as Tea cards. These were issued by Horniman Tea in
1951, titled simply "Dogs" and enclosed singly in
all 1/4-packets of Hornimans Tea. The following is
printed on the back of the card: "Not Connected with
Denmark, having been developed in Germany as a giant
dog with a heavy head for hunting and fighting
purposes, principally for use against wild boar.
Probably over 400 years old and originally descended
from ancient Asian Mastiff. Although very beautiful
in outline, a "pretty" dog is not enough. He must
have size, weight, nobility, courage, speed and
endurance. Stands 30" high at shoulders and weighs
120 lbs."
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 3(Horniman Tea, 1961)... $4.95 each
A lovely painting issued by Players in 1925
titled "Dogs-Scenic Background". Description on
the back of the card is as follows: "One of the
giants amongst domestic dogs is the Great Dane or
German Boarhound, probably unsurpassed for his
immense strength, combined with activity and
elegance of outline. In his native country his ears
are cropped, but ear cutting in this country is now
abolished, and so imported specimens with cropped
ears cannot be exhibited for competition. He is
valuable as a guard, and although he experienced a
set-back during the war, he is now regaining his
popularity. Colour: brindle, fawn, blue,
black and harlequins. Height at shoulder 29
to 31 ins. Weight 120 to 130 lbs."
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 4(Players Scenic, 1925)... $7.95 each
This is a Tea card that was issued in 1955. The
cards were printed on the box of Typhoo Tea and had
to be cut out for saving. The description is on the
front of the card as opposed to the usual back.
There were 20 cards in the series, the Great Dane
being No, 11. The series was titled "Some Popular
Breeds of Dogs".
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 5(TyPhoo Tea, 1955)... $8.95 each
This colorful picture is from Gallaher
"Dogs A Series", issued in 1936.
Quoted on the back: "People who find the behaviour
of small dogs irritating to the nerves will always
admire the unhurried dignity and poise of the Great
Dane, the most popular of all large dogs. He is a
descendant of the great Continental hunting dogs
which were used to chase the boar. Great Danes are
bred in five colours, and the harlequins as shown
here are a striking variety. They are the best of
the big dogs in respect of friendship."
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 6(Gallaher Dogs A Series, 1936)... $9.95 each
This colorful card is no. 23 in a series of 25 issued by Wills in 1914 titled "Dogs A Series".
An authorized reproduction titled "Dogs A Series-reprint of 1914" ,
was re-issued in 1987. The following is printed on the back of the card:
"These dogs, the largest European representatives of the Mastiff
group, were originally used for boar or deer hunting,
but are usually now employed as watch-dogs or as
pets. The Great Dane is a magnificently
proportioned animal, with a most elegant and
dignified carriage. He is usually affectionate and
docile, though occasionally headstrong, excitable,
and inclined to attack other dogs. This breed is
making rapid strides in public favour. Until
recently very little attention was paid to colour,
but the English Clubs have now declared the orthodox
colours to be brindle, fawn, black, and harlequin.
The harlequin should have black patches on a white
ground. These dogs are usually about 30 inches high
at the shoulder, and should weight not less than 100
lbs."
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 7(Wills Dogs A Series, 1914)... ORIGINAL $24.95 each
Great Dane Black,Harlequin Card 7(Wills Dogs A Series, 1987)... Reproduction $5.95 each
This beautiful old card is from a series of cards
issued by Ogdens Cigarettes in 1904. The card
is No. 27 in the series of 50 issued. The title of
the series is 'FOWLS, PIGEONS AND DOGS'. The back
of the card is ornate and printed in green as
follows: "Sometimes called 'German Boarhound',
is a big noble-looking animal, and though not
English in origin is now thoroughly naturalised here,
and is a great favorite. With his grand figure,
which is not so heavy as the Mastiff, nor yet so
light as the Greyhound, he presents a bold and
muscular appearance. Formerly he had ears cropped,
and certainly looked sprightlier than now with them
pendulous. Height, 30 to 35 inches. Weight to 190
lbs." No collection should be without this lovely Great Dane.
