Another tea card, this time from Hornimans Tea and enclosed singly in all 1/4 lb. packets of tea in 1961. The following is shown on the back of the card: "The English Setter gallops gaily through a hundred or more years of English sport and is a dog which exemplifies English country life and the English country gentleman between 1800 and 1900. Like the pointer his traditional task of finding game on the moors is slowly disappearing. Clean in outline and of medium height, he should measure the same from shoulder to ground as from should to root of tail.

These cards were to be printed and distributed in 1940 during World War II, however due to a paper shortage only a very few were printed. It is almost impossible to get an original of this card. In 1994, a series of 50 cards titled 'Dogs Heads(Eire)- Reprint of 1940' were issued. This card is one of the reprints. Printed on the back of the card: "The modern development of the English Setter is attributed to Mr. Edward Laverack, a Shropshire sportsman, who acquired his first breeding stock in 1825. By careful breeding of the descendants from his original pair, Ponto and Old Molly Edward Laverack created his own strain of Setters, which were known as Laveracks. They were handsome animals and good field dogs, but difficult to break and handle. To lessen this impetuosity Mr. R. L. Purcel Llewellin, also of Shropshire. crossed some Laverack bitches with a dog named Dan, belonging to a North of England strain. Thanks to his efforts, the English Setter is now a most capable and tractable gundog, and a popular show animal."

ENGLISH SETTER PUPPIES
'Pattreiouex Dogs' were issued in 1939 and enclosed in packages of Senior service Cigarettes. Shown on the back: "The English Setter is similar to the commoner Irish. Few setters have any sense of property, otherwise they are ideal companions.

*G E N E R A L - H I N T S*
SELECTING A PUP (4). Do not worry if a young pup is deficient in bone or slightly bow legged. Lime watewr, calcium lactate, cod liver oil, and large soft bones to gnaw, will straighten up any pup's legs. Quite a little daily is enough. Pass your hand gently over the pup's stomach; a rupture feels like a small soft lump. Do not buy a ruptured pup."

Artist Peter Beigel did these drawings for Players cigarettes in 1940. The reverse side of the card:"In the opinion of Mr, Edward Laverack, the Setter is only an improved Spaniel. It was this famous dog breeder who, in the mid-nineteenth century, did so much to produce the English Setter we value so highly today. It is suitably built for work with the gun in the stubble and grassland, but unfortunately it is not worked often enough in England today. This is not the case in the United States where the Llewellyn strain of the breed finds great favour as a gun-dog. The English Setter is most attractive and good-natured. Its coat should be white, flecked with either black, lemon or liver markings, although patches of these colours are permissible."

Another version of the English Setter, this time by artist Arthur Wardle, issued by Players in 1929. The following is printed on the back of the card: "The Setter, that delightful companion and ideal sporting dog, is a relative of the Spaniel, the old authorities regarding him as a cross between Spaniel and Pointer. A 14th century author wrote of the Setter: Hyscrafties for the perdrich (partridge) and the quaile; and when taught to crouch, he is very serviceable. Between 1825 and 1877 the noted breeder Mr. E. Laverack, built up the strain from which many present-day Setters trace their origin. Black and white, lemon and white, liver and white; or black, white and tan are the colours preferred."

Printed on the back: "Regarded either as a domestic companion or as a sporting dog the English Setter is certainly one of the most beautiful and elegant of the canine race. His proper sphere is, however, on the grouse-moors or among the root crops and stubble in the patridge season. He has wonderful scenting power, and draws up to the game in fine style patiently waiting until his master walks up. Gallaher Tobacco issued these nice paintings inserted singly in packages of cigarettes in 1936. The artist is listed as Mabel Gear. Shown on the back: "One of the most beautiful dogs to be seen to-day is the English Setter with its varied colouring. There are four types of colours and markings; blue and white, lemon and white, liver and white, and tricolour, that is, tan, white and blue, the lighter the better. It is a very dignified animal and not only fashionable but a great favourite with sportmen. The English Setter is less temperamental than its Irish cousin has no vices and is very affectionate. "This breed of dog is greatly used in pheasant and partridge shooting. They are both handsome and popular, and of a very excellent type. the dog is depicted in illustrations in 1880 and 1803 when it was known as the Old English Setter. They are tireless when hunting, and one authority on the breed quotes an instance when a dog hunted a matter of sixty miles or so in a day. The bitch illustrated is owned by Mrs. Christian, and is a well-known winner on the show bench."

Shown on the back of the card: "The mild, sweet disposition characteristic of the English Setter, along with the beauty, intelligence and aristocratic appearance, accounts for its popularity, especially among sportsmen. The lovable disposition of the English Setter makes it an ideal companion for children. It is however, a dog that requires considerable exercise and therefore is better suited to the country than the city."

ENGLISH SETTER
"No one can definitely say what breed went into the making of the English Setter, but its development into its present form can decidedly be placed to Mr. Edward Laverack and Mr. R. L. Purcell Llewellin. The former began his strain in 1825, and eventually dogs bred by him obtained remarkable fame and came to be known as Laveracks. They were very fine-looking animals, stylish workers but difficult to break and handle. In 1871 Mr. Llewellin, in an attempt to combine the Laverack's good looks with a better temperament, mated some Laverack bitches with an out-cross, "Dan" and so created the Llewellin strain which survives to-day in many of the finest specimens. Unlike many gundog breeds, the English Setter shows little tendency to split up into two types-- Working and show--and many leading bench winners are equally capable in the field."

So long ago as the 14th century it was written of the Setter: Hyscrafte is for the perdrich (partridge) and the quaile; and when taught to crouch, he is very serviceable. The first definite record of the English Setter breed dates from about 1825, when the noted breeder of Setters, Mr. Edward Laverack, began to build up the strain from which so many present-day Setters trace their origin. Hignett enclosed these great paintings in their cigarettes in 1936. On the reverse: "One of the oldest gun-dogs known in England, the Setter is mentioned in sporting literature of the 15th century, when the breed was first used in conjunction with the hawk. The English Setter's early development is probably linked up with that of the English Springer Spaniel, and about 1825 a sportsman named Laverack established a type which had great influence on the breed's appearance. But the most beneficial strain has been that which was originated by a Mr. Llewellin about 1870, by crossing a dog named "Dan" with Laverack bitches."

Wills cigarettes '2nd series of 25 cards' were issued in 1925. The following is shown on the back of the card: "It is said Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, was the first sportsman to train setting dogs in the manner now commonly adopted, and his contemporary, Dr. Caius, described the breed in his work on English Dogges, which was written in the 16th century. Few dogs are more popular than the English Setter, for he is both beautiful in appearance and uesful as a sporting dog or as a domestic companion. He excels as a game dog, and is seen at his very best on the grouse moors, or among the root-crops and stubbles when the September partridge season commences. A good English Setter may be either black and white, lemon and white, or black, white and tan; and those who are flecked all over (that is without heavy patches of colour) are most highly esteemed."

A larger version of Players 'Dogs-Scenic Background' was issued in a series of 12 cards in 1924. This is the number 7 card in that series of 12. Printed on the back of the card: "Regarded either as a domestic companion or as a sporting dog the English Setter is certainly one of the most beautiful and elegant of the canine race. His proper sphere is, however, on the grouce-moors or among the root crops and stubble in the partridge season. He has wonderful scenting power, and draws up to the game in fine style patiently waiting until his master walks up. The English Setter was used and prized by sportsmen for his sporting proclivities as early as the fifteenth century. In the early days the dog was bred purely for sport, and few sportsmen, whether of the "Old English gentleman" class or of the farming class, were without their brace of Setters. Years ago a Mr. Laverack established a strain of English Setters of marvellous sporting instinct, and to this day they are known as "Laverack" Setters. The silky feathery coat of the English Setter is either flecked black and white, lemon and white, or blue and white. Height about 22 inches, Weight 60 to 65 lbs."

The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

* We can take visa, mastercard, discover, a check, or PayPal. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* We do have discounts if you want to buy more than one.

* We have a couple of copies of some of the cards, and since they are much more fun when you have a "set", we would be happy to give a discount for multiple purchases. This can make a set of interesting breed cards quite reasonable. Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
