Norwegian Elkhound stamp from Dhufar

This stamp was issued by the United Arab Emirate of Dhufar in 1984. I would swear that it is a drawing taken from the earlier stamp put out by Equitorial Guinea,(shown below) right down to the shading around the eyes.

Norwegian Elkhound stamp from Equitorial Guinea

This stamp of the Noregian Elkhounds is one of our oldest. It was issued by Equitorial Guinea in Africa in 1977. It is an attractive portrait of an Elkhound from more than 20 years ago. It is particularly interesting in comparison to the stamp above from Dhufar.
Equatorial Guinea is located in Western Africa bordering the Bight of Biafra, between Cameroon and Gabon. The area is slightly smaller than Maryland. The climate is tropical, always hot and humid. The terrain: coastal plains rise to interior hills; islands are volcanic. Natural resources consist of petroleum, timber, small unexploited deposits of gold, manganese, uranium. Natural hazards; violent windstorms and flash floods.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Eynhallow Scotland

The date of issue of this attractive stamp is 1984. It has the emblem of the Rotary International in the upper left corner. Although these stamps were not expensive, they are increasingly difficult to find.
Eynhallow is also known as Holy Island. It is one of the numerous islands off the coast of Scotland that issues stamps under their own authority. They are not really valid postage stamps but if the island is occupied, the stamps can be used to send mail to the mainland, but are not of use beyond that or even to send mail back to the island. Many of the islands are not occupied and the stamps from those are considered simply privately produced stamps.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Grenada

Grenada is an island nation in the Caribbean. In 1997, they issued a lovely set of dog stamps with the unique combination of each breed along with a famous site from their country of origin. For the Norwegian Elkhound, it shows the Urnes Stave Church in Norway.
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelled Petite) Martinique. These should remain available for some time, but it comes from an expensive set.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Guinea

A wonderful stamp produced by the Republic of Guinea in 1996.. Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.
This stamp comes from a set that is easily one of the most attractive ever issued for dogs. It is, on the surface, the portrait of a darling puppy, but when you look closer to the background, a headstudy of the magnificent adult that that puppy will become is clearly visible. Since it was issued in 1996, I expect it to remain available as well.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Kalmykia

This stamp was issued in 1999.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Laos

Laos issued this stylized set of dogs clear back in 1986. Without the breed name down the side, it would be difficult to identify some of them. Although this would not be my first choice for a new Elkhound collection, it is necessary for a complete set of Elkhound stamps.
Laos is located in southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of Vietnam. Burma, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Vietnam all border Laos. Laos is slightly larger than Utah. The climate is tropical monsoon. Laos is a Communist state. They gained their independence from France on July 19, 1949. The government of Laos - one of the few remaining official Communist states - began decentralizing control and encouraging private enterprise in 1986. Laos is the world's third-largest illicit opium producer. It has a population of 5,777,180.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Tadjikistan

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including this great Norwegian Elkhound put out in 2000.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Tanzania

Tanzania put out a series of dog stamps in 1994 with the headstudies of more than 20 breeds. This is the Elkhound offering. They are relatively easy to find.
Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Turkmenistan

This is a beautiful stamp issued in 2000 from Turkmenistan.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Ukrainia

This is probably the most unusual Elkhound item that we have. This stamp was issued by Ukrania several years ago. At the time that I got it, I bought the expensive set because it had a Borzoi in it. There was a second set available, but I passed it up figuring that I would get it later. I have never seen a copy of the set nor even an individual stamp from the set since, but it is worth noting that such a thing exists.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Udmurtia

What a lovely stamp by Udmurtia in 2001. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Norwegian Elkhound.

Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Yakutia Norwegian Elkhound stamps from Yakutia

The break-up of the Russian empire has been a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. Nearly every new state is desperate for income and one way to get some is to issue attractive stamps that will be collected for their beauty, not to mail letters. These are part of those lucky finds. Yakutia issued a small set of dogs including this lovely Elkhound on the left in 1999. Our newest addition, the Elkhound on the right, was produced in 2000. Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia. These stamps should remain available, but sometimes it is hard to tell with new postal entities.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested. We try to keep all stamps in stock, so we probably have the ones that you are looking for.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
