Doberman stamp from Abkhazia
Doberman stamp from Abkhazia

Nice renditions of the Doberman Pinscher issued by Abkhazia.
The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. These stamps were put out in 1999.

Doberman stamp from Afghanistan

An incredible Doberman Pinscher stamp issued in 2003 by Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Doberman stamp from Ajman

Ajman produced this stamp in 2000. There were several breeds in the set and each and every one was spectacular.
Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Doberman stamp from Angola

This stamp issued by Angola was put out in 2000.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Doberman stamp from Antillen

The Netherland Antilles is a group of islands in the Caribbean. Once the center of the Caribbean slave trade, the island of Curacao was hard hit by the abolition of slavery in 1863. Its prosperity (and that of neighboring Aruba) was restored in the early 20th century with the construction of oil refineries to service the newly discovered Venezuelan oil fields. The island of Saint Maarten is shared with France; its northern portion is named Saint Martin and is part of Guadeloupe. This stamp was issued by the Netherlands-Antilles in 1995.

Doberman stamp
from Barbados

Barbados is the eastern-most Caribbean island. The island, which is less than one million years old, was created by the collision of the Atlantic crustal and Caribbean plates, along with a volcanic eruption. Later coral formed, accumulating to approximately 300 feet. It is geologically unique, being actually two land masses that merged together over the years. The history of the early settlement of Barbados is being rewritten as a result of recent archaeological discoveries unearthed at the site of Port St. Charles. Artifacts and evidence point to settlement some time around 1623 B.C. The first indigenous people were Amerindians who arrived here from Venezuela. The first English ship touched the island on May 14th 1625 under the command of Captain John Powell. The island was therefore claimed on behalf of King James I. It remained a British colony until internal autonomy was granted in 1961. The Island gained full independence in 1966. This is their rendition of the Doberman Pinscher issued in 1997. It should be easily available .

Doberman stamp from Benin

Benin is one of the new Russian states that has started issuing topical stamps to generate hard currency. It is a perfect solution to some of their economic ills, since people around the world are willing to buy the topical stamps and not use them to mail letters which would require more services to be offered.
It may be noted that Benin, former Dahomey, has perhaps the "most beaten tracks by Europeans of any in Africa". The history of Benin is a succession of kingdoms, followed by years of communist rule and finally independence in 1990. This was issued in 1997 and whatever the reason that they are produced, everybody is a winner with such a lovely stamp as this one of an elegant Doberman.

Doberman stamp from Bulgaria

In 1970, Bulgaria issued a set of dog head studies that included this Doberman. At one time, these were very readily available, but recently they are becoming harder to find.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

from Cambodia

Cambodia has issued two Doberman stamps. The stamp on the left came out in 1987 as part of a set of about eight dogs. The best of the set is probably the Samoyed since there is no controversy about cropped ears, etc. The one on the right was issued in 1996.

The climate is tropical, rainy, monsoon season (May to November); dry season (December to April; little seasonal temperature variation. The terrain is mostly low, flat plains; mountains in southwest and north. The natural hazards are the monsoonal rains; flooding; occasional droughts. Doberman Pinscher stamp from Congo

A lovely full body and a headstudy of the Doberman Pinscher issued by Afghanistan.
The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Cuba

This stamp was issued in Cuba in 1992 to commemorate the Cuban Kennel Club. The US has an embargo against Cuba so the only stamps from there that we find are typically brought in the country in collections from Canada. This makes them much more difficult to get (along with North Korea, which puts out a lot of dog stamps and Iran and Iraq that have not issued dog stamps anyway.)

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Dagestan

This darling red Dobie was put out in 1998 by Dagestan, another of the new Russian local governments. Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.
This is one of the few puppy stamps that we have and one of only three red Dobes available.

Doberman stamp from Eynhallow

Eynhallow is also known as Holy Island. It is one of the numerous islands off the coast of Scotland that issues stamps under their own authority. They are not really valid postage stamps but if the island is occupied, the stamps can be used to send mail to the mainland, but are not of use beyond that or even to send mail back to the island. Many of the islands are not occupied and the stamps from those are considered simply privately produced stamps. This one was done in 1984 along with seven other breeds.

Doberman stamp from Grenada

A lovely non-cropped Dobie from the island country of Grenada.
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique. This is a recent issue and should be available for some time.

Doberman stamp from Kabardino Balkaria

This stamp was put out in 2001. It is a little too dark, but it is a rare stamp from a Russian country and the first we have had even tho it is from 2001.
The Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria is a federal subject of the Russian Federation located in the northern Caucasus mountains, with plains in the northern part. The Kabardian lands have been under Russian protectorate since 1557. In 1739 Kabardia became independent and 1774 became part of the Russian empire. Balkaria was annexed in 1827. In 1944, Stalin accused the Balkars of collaborating with Nazi Germany and deported the entire population. The Territory was renamed the Kabardin ASSR until 1957, when the Balkar population was allowed to return and its name was restored.

Doberman stamp from Karakalpakia

Another lovely head study, this time from Karakalpakia in 1999.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1998.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Karyala

Karelia is another of the Russian states. Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, to which it once belonged.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.
This Doberman was issued in 1998 along with about ten other breeds done in about the same format. The date on the mini cancel (which is part of the stamp design, not a real postmark) says April 23-26 which is probably in reference to a special expo of some sort.

Doberman stamp from Koriakia

Koriakia is another Russian state (you can start to see how much the break-up of the Soviet Union has enriched the topical stamp fancy). This could easily be a Min Pin or even a Manchester Terrier, but it is listed as a Doberman and issued in 1998.
Koriakia and Kolyma Region, going southwest we cross huge ecotone between artic tundra and boreal forests. Zonal vegetation here is very specific unique for the world thickets of Siberian Dwarf Pine. The Pines produce cones with nuts and are the intial component for a lot of food chains. The weather in summer is mainly good, however sometimes in chilly evenings it is more comfortable in a sweater; also need in warm weather rain clothes and high rubber boots in most areas. problems are mosquitos and ticks. Local Russians take vaccines against these.

Doberman stamp from Koriakia

Kosova, also known as Kosovo, is the disputed region between Kosova's Albanian majority and Serbia. Once an autonomous federal unit of Yugoslavia, in 1989 it was stripped away of its autonomy by the government of Slobodan Milosevic, whose later actions would result in the break-up of Yugoslavia, which Serbia is a part of, and the ensuing wars in Croatia, Bosnia- Hercegovina, and Kosova.
After the revocation of Kosova's autonomy, the Serbian authorities closed schools in the Albanian language, massively dismissed Albanians from state- owned enterprises, and suspended Kosova's legal parliament and government. Serbia instituted a regime of systematic oppression of the Albanian population in Kosova, and flagrant violations of basic rights of Albanians occured frequently.
In early 1998 the Serbian government began a crackdown against the Kosova Liberation Army (UÇK), a guerilla movement which emerged after it became apparent that the peaceful approach was ineffective in face of the brutal regime of Milosevic. After 1998 Serbian security forces conducted a scorched earth policy in Kosova, raising villages to the ground, and committed horrific atrocities against unarmed civilians, including women and children.
The NATO bombing campaign, which began in March 1999 after Serbia's refusal to sign a peace accord for the settlement of the conflict in Kosova, lasted until June 1999 when the Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic capitulated and agreed to withdraw all Serbian security forces from Kosova.
The war in Kosova had created over one million refugees and internally displaced persons, left over 300,000 people without shelter, an estimated 10,000 dead, and mass graves containing bodies of up to one hundred civilians, including women and children, who have been summarily executed.
The Kosovars, UNMIK, NATO and the international community are now making efforts to rebuild Kosova, revitalize its economy, establish democratic institutions of self-government, and heal the scars of war.
This is a new issue from Kosova.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Monaco

Monaco issues a stamp every year to honor their International Dog Show. In 1998, it was in honor of the Boxer and Doberman Specialities. Usually, each stamp has only one breed, but the layout of this one makes it quite attractive even with the two breeds.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy. Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the House of Grimaldi). The Chief of State: Prince RAINIER III (since 9 May 1949); Heir Apparent Prince ALBERT Alexandre Louis Pierre, son of the Monarch (born 14 March 1958). There are no elections, the monarchy is hereditary. Monaco does not have an embassy in the US.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Nicaragua

Nicaragua issued this attractive stamp in 1987.
Nicaragua is a Central American country that has had a turbulent recent history. In the 1980s, the country was racked by a civil war between the leftist Sandinista government and US-backed Contra rebels. Unemployment soared and annual hyperinflation reached 24,000%. Today, President Arnoldo Aleman, a right-wing businessman, is struggling to rebuild a country once defined by the Cold War conflict. To some extent, he’s succeeded. Although most Nicaraguans remain mired in poverty, economic growth has averaged nearly 5% a year under Aleman. The dog is listed as a Doberman. I don't have any other information on it, but it is generally available.

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. Doberman Pinscher stamp from Sakhalin Islands

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Dobermans shown above is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Sakhalin Island. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. Doberman Pinscher stamp from Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands are in the Pacific between Australia and Hawaii. The origin of the present Melanesian inhabitants is uncertain. Although archaeological and linguistic evidence shows that Solomon Islands was probably settled 4,000 - 5,000 years ago by Austronesian, neolithic people from South-East Asia. Archaeological evidence also shows that one group of people settled on islands from the Bismarcks to Polynesian and became the ancestors of all Polynesians, some eventually returning to the outlying islands of Solomon islands. The first documented European contact was made in 1568 by the Spanish explorer, Alvaro de Mendana. Mendana discovered alluvial gold on Guadalcanal and, perhaps thinking he found the source of King Solomon's great wealth (the Biblical King Solomon's mine), named the islands the "Isles of Solomon ". Because of Mendana's Spanish heritage, many of the islands in the Solomon Islands bear original Spanish names. Great Britain declared a Protectorate in 1893 over the southern Solomons, adding the Santa Cruz group in 1898 and 1899. The islands of the Shortland group were transferred by treaty from Germany to Great Britain in 1900. The Islands were granted independence in 1978.
Communial, familial and clan ties remain very strong in Solomon Islands. Most people consider themselves to be part of an immediate family of 200 and can trace back their ancestors at least ten generations. The Pijin word "wantok" - which derives from "one talk" meaning people from the same language group - is used to indicate blood relatives in the extended family.
This stamp was issued by the Solomon Islands in 1994. The stamp has a referral in the upper left corner to Hong Kong, 1994 but that was also the Year of the Dog, so it might very well have had a dual purpose as well.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Somalia

This stamp was put out by the country of Somalia in 1997. I find it one of our more attractive examples of Doberman stamps.
Somalia, also called the Somali Democratic Republic, is located on the Horn of Africa, the easternmost part of the African continent. Although it gained its independence in 1960, nearly constant unrest has kept it from establishing a lasting presence in the area.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Somaliland

This stamp was put out by of Somaliland in 1999. I find it one of our more attractive examples of Doberman stamps.
The Republic of Somaliland (North West of somalia) situated on the tip of the Horn of Africa, was formed in 1991 after separating from southern Somalia. The people of Somaliland experienced more than three years of bitter civil war (1988-1991) resulting in the deaths of nearly 60,000 people, massisive displacement both internal and to other countries, and a near total destruction of infrastructure, communications systems, banking and public services.
Following a period of inter-clan conflict, the Somali people have settled internal disputes using traditional peace-building methods, and they have started to rehabilitate and reconstruct their damaged country. A stable administration has been formed, with a smooth transition of leadership following the death of former President Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, in May 2002. Demobilisation of former militia fighters into a national police force and army has created an environment of security within national boundaries.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from St. Lucia

This stamp was issued in 1977, in commemoration of the Caribbean Boy Scout Jamboree in Jamaica.
St. Lucia is the sort of island that Travellers to the Caribbean dream about--a small, lush tropical gem that is still relatively unknown. One of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, it is located midway down the Eastern Caribbean chain, between Martinique and St. Vincent, and north of Barbados. St. Lucia is only 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, with a shape that is said to resemble either a mango or an avocado (depending on your taste). The Atlantic Ocean kisses its eastern shore, while the beaches of the west coast owe their beauty to the calm Caribbean Sea.
St. Lucia has been inhbited since long before colonial times, and its cultural treasures are a fascinating melange of its rich past and its many different traditions. The island's steep coastlines and lovely reefs offer excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. Not to be missed is St. Lucia's Soufriere volcano, the world's only drive-in volcanic crater.

Doberman Pinscher stamp from Saint Thomas

Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. Doberman stamp from Touva Doberman stamp from Touva 1

Both of the above stamps were issued by Touva in 1999.
Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers.

Togolaise is located in Western Africa, bordering the Bight of Benin, between Benin and Ghana. It is slightly smaller than West Virginia. The majority of the population depends on subsistance agriculture. Coffee, cotton and cocoa are the major export crops. The capital, Lome, is a regional commercial and banking center, although its position relative to neighboring countries has been eroded in recent years because of political and economic difficulties. Fish is an important part of the Togolese diet, but Togo does not have a developed fishing industry. The primary goal of the U.S. government in Togo is to promote respect for democracy and the rule of law.

President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. Doberman stamp from Yakutia

What a lovely stamp by Udmurtia in 2001. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Doberman puppy.

Doberman stamp from Central Africa

Doberman stamp from Central Africa The Central African Republic put out this unusual souvenir sheet. The focus of the stamp is the Pekinese in the center, but the surrounding dogs are even more interesting. The Pharaoh Hound and Basset are beautifully done and the Border Collie and Doberman are some of the rare instances where the dogs are shown doing their work. In the left margin is: "Chiens de Surveillance -- Doberman", French for "Watch Dogs -- Doberman". To the left is a detail of the Dobermans being walked by the officer.

Doberman stamp from Guinea This wonderful souvenir sheet with the action packed Doberman was issued by the Republic of Guinea in 2000.
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Doberman stamp from Liberia

Doberman stamp from Liberia
Isn't this an awesome sheet of all 'working dogs'? It was put out by Liberia recently.
Liberia is an independent republic which lies on the on the bulge of Africa between Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. The official language of Liberia is English but several local languages are more widely spoken. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the government and led to economic mismanagement and debt. A democratically elected government was elected in 1997; however, the war had severely damaged the economy through the loss of facilities and foreign investment.

Manilaid is an island about 800 meters away from the mainland of Estonia. It was first mentioned in 1560, but the first settlement only dates back to the year 1933, when the lighthouse was built and 20 families from Kihnu Island decided to move there because Kihnu was overcrowded. Everything needed for life is transported from mainland. Women wear old national costumes every day. Manilaid is a very extraordinary, exotic place!
This minisheet was issued in 1998, and it not only has the three images of Dobermans, and the Siberian Huskey, but if you look very closely, you can see the head study of a Basset Hound in the background!

A Compact of Free Association with the US was approved in 1986, but not ratified until 1993. It entered into force the following year when the islands gained their independence.
The economy consists primarily of subsistence agriculture and fishing. The government is the major employer of the work force, relying heavily on financial assistance from the US. The population enjoys a per capita income of twice that of he Philippines and much of Micronesia. Long-run prospects for the tourist sector have been greatly bolstered by the expansion of air travel in the Pacific and the rising prosperity of leading East Asian countries.

Doberman stamp from Sierra Leone

Doberman stamp from Sierra Leona
Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months.

Doberman stamp from Yakutzia

Doberman stamp from Yakutia
I believe that Yakutia must have set a record with this souvenir sheet. Not only did they manage to put 40 different breeds on one stamp, but they managed to have the perforation lines run through nearly every dog! And most of those that were missed were overprinted with the cancel stamps. This is another case of its value being mainly in the effort to have a complete collection. The Doberman is near the bottom left of the above souvenir sheet.
