This is an unusual stamp issued in 2000. They are becoming harder to get.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation.The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Dalmatian shown above on the left is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Komi. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Dalmatian image from the overprint, put out by Abkhazia.

This is a lovely stamp issued in May, 1998, from Angola in Africa.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Antigua & Barbuda are a pair of sister islands in the north east Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders. In 1994, they put out two sets of stamps in honor of The Year of the Dog. There were 12 large breeds and 12 small breeds. This lovely Dalmatian on the left was in the set of large breeds. This is a fairly common stamp.
The stamp on the right, is a Christmas edition issued in 1998, but still very obscure. It says a Very Merry Christmas with a nifty Dal under the Christmas tree.

Azerbaijan is on the west side of the Caspian Sea, next to Armenia and just north of Iran. Its tragic civil war has kept it in the news for some time. The stamp above was issued in 1997.

This 'happy' stamp of a Dalmatian puppy was issued in 1996. (see our page of Dalmatian puppies.) Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. It is a Black Sea oil port at the end of an oil line. In 1878 its turbulent modern history began when it was taken by Russia from Turkey. Following the fall of the Tsar, the caucasion peoples reasserted their independence and Turkey saw its chance to win back old territory. Its troops entered Batum in april 1918. From this time date letters handstamped Batumskaya Kontora during a shortage of stamps at the Post Office and thus begins Batums philatelic history.

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out by Buriatia.

This wonderful stamp was issued in 1998 from Bhutan.
Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries, takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.

This is a very difficult stamp to find, from Chile, produced in 1998. It is smaller than most of the other stamps that we have and it appears that the artist who did the portrait is M. Carrasco

This stamp was issued in 2003.
The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

I am pleased to offer this wonderful Dalmatian stamp from Cuba. It was also issued in 1994, for the Year of the Dog, but since Cuba is an US embargoed country, the stamps from there must come into this country in collections, typically from Canada.

This great Dalmatian stamp is new, issued in 2000, from Dagestan.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Davaar is an island off the edge of Scotland. There seems to be three or four of these whose major source of income is issuing topical stamps for sales around the world. This set that included the nice Dalmatian was issued in 1984.

Evenkia is in the far northern region of central Russia. The native people were nomads who depend on hunting and reindeer for their livelihood for centuries. The Soviet government tried to bring these people under their rule but the climatic conditions are very harsh and it was difficult to exploit the natural resources, so much of the country was still undominated when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. This is the first set of dog stamps issued by the remote region of Evenkia, put out in 1999.

Gabon, an African country put out the most unique set of stamps in 1996. It contained such diverse breeds as the Harrier, Bernese Mountain Dog and Pug. They are not hard to find.
Little is known about the history of the Gabon region prior to the arrival of the first Portuguese navigators in the Gabon Estuary in 1472, for the Bantu-speaking peoples inhabiting the region lacked writing. The slave trade achieved extensive development only between the 1760s and 1840s, as a result of heightened demand from Brazil and Cuba. Interior peoples sent undesirables from their own societies and captives from warfare down the waterways to the coast where they were collected in barracoons (temporary enclosures) to await the arrival of European ships. In 1910 Gabon became one of the four colonies within the federation of French Equatorial Africa. Gabon was granted internal autonomy in 1958 and became fully independent on 17 August 1960. Much political unrest and ultimately the outbreak of Ebola virus has set Gabon back both economically and politically. Gabon issued this somewhat whimsical stamp in 1996.

At first, I wasn't very fond of this set from Gambia that was issued in 1997, but the more I look at them, the more the soft colors, and unique poses attract me.
The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.

Grunay is a Scottish local post in Skeoris, Shetland Island. A local post is an independent mail system not operated by a Postal system. If local post stamps are used on envelopes that are to be mailed outside the local area they also must bear official postage stamps in order to be delivered. The most northerly part of the British Isles, Shetland comprises over 100 Islands of which fewer than 20 are inhabited. Grunay is largely uninhabited.

This stamp from Guyana was issued in 1995. Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana. It does not usually issue dog stamps and this set is a special treat.

This stamp was issued in 2001.
Hakasia is located in the south of Serbia, next to the Sayan-Altay Mountains and Yenisey River and the the north Altay Republic. Its capital is the city of Abakan. The real name of Hakas people who speak Turkish is Koray people. They are composed of four tribes. Hakasia is devoted to its own language, culture and traditions and there is a university, technical institute, and institutes for linguistic, historical and literary researches in Hakasia. There are also various cultural and artistic institutions, 4 theatres, library and museums as well as music and art schools. Hakas Turks are Christians, but they continue their Shamanist beliefs and traditions. Agriculture, stockbreeding and timber productions are the means of subsistence in the region. Breeding of sheep horses, cattle, and beekeeping are also the signicant means of subsistence.

This stamp was issued in 1996 from Great Britain (Isle of Man is part of the British Commonwealth.) Isle of Man is set in the Irish Sea, midway between England, Scotland, N. Ireland and Wales. Known also as "Mann", the strongly independent Island has the oldest continuous parliament in the world, Tynwald.

Surely, one of the loveliest Dalmatian stamps is this one from Jersey. It combines a lovely dog with a shadowy background. If you look closely, you can see the pair of horses pulling the coach behind the dog.

The break-up of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. The individual states are trying to generate currency without having to provide the associated services, so they issue lovely stamps that are sold abroad to be collected rather than used to mail letters. Whatever the reason, it has brought us such lovely stamps as the two above. They are very different stamps, both issued by the Jewish Republic which is near Siberia. The stamp on the left was put out in 1999 and the one on the right, in 1997.

This stamp from Karakalpakia was issued in 2001.
Many countries use the same image on a stamp they produce. See Koriakia and Sakhalin below.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, to which it once belonged. This lovely Dalmatian stamp was issued by Karelia in 1999.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

This stamp was issued in 2002.
The Komi Republic is situated in the extreme North-East part of Russia. It is a multinational state, since the population of Komi Republic is estimated at 1.2 million citizen and consists of 100 nationalities. The Komi Republic is now a democratic legal state included into the Russian Federation. The republic has unique stocks of mineral resources thanks to their location, diversity and quality.

This is another of the new topical stamps from the Russian states, in this case the Republic of Koriakia issued in 2001.
Koriakia and Kolyma Region, going southwest we cross huge ecotone between artic tundra and boreal forests. Zonal vegetation here is very specific unique for the world thickets of Siberian Dwarf Pine. The Pines produce cones with nuts and are the intial component for a lot of food chains. The weather in summer is mainly good, however sometimes in chilly evenings it is more comfortable in a sweater; also need in warm weather rain clothes and high rubber boots in most areas. problems are mosquitos and ticks. Local Russians take vaccines against these.

Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa. It is very poor, but has recently built a large dam to help it have power and sell water to its neighbor, the Republic of South Africa. Lesotho issued a set of dog stamps that are consistently attractive. This stamp was issued in 1998.

Mordovia produced this action-packed stamp in 2001.
Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Like most of the other republics, Mordovia has started issuing new postal stamps including this great Dalmatian.

Mozambique is an island off the eastern side of Africa. Mozambique is 106 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.
This is one of our oldest Dalmatian stamps, issued over 20 years ago in 1979. I don't find it terribly attractive with the drooping flews, but it is a Dalmatian stamp and deserves to be in the collection.

A new stamp put out by Nevis in 2000.
St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was names after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

This darling stamp was issued by New Zealand on June 16, 1999. The cartoon drawing is sort of hard to see, but the Bulldog is on the right in front of the Old English Sheepdog, the Dalmatian and the Greyhound. They, and the Dachshund are after the fuzzy toy dog with the BIG bone. The writing says Hairy Maclary's Bone, which was a children's book written by Lynley Dodd having to do with sharing and friendship. It is shown with a backing because it was only issued as a self-adhesive stamp.

This attractive stamp was produced by Niger in 1998. The Scout image is prominently displayed also.
Niger is a poor, landlocked Sub-Saharan nation. Two-thirds of Niger is desert with much of the northeastern part of the country being uninhabitable. The remaining third of the country is savannah, suitable mainly for raising livestock and limited agriculture. The country is subject to the problems of overgrazing; soil erosion; deforestation; desertification; wildlife populations (such as elephant, hippopotamus, giraffe, and lion) threatened because of poaching and habitat destruction.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000.
East Timor is an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest still since the current government does not want to give up power.

Romania has put out three different Dalmatian stamps many years ago. The one above was issued in 1981. It was a simple design and striking in its simplicity.
Romania is located in Southeastern Europe, bordering the Black Sea. between Bulgaria and Ukraine. It is slightly smaler than Oregon. The climate is temperate; cold, cloudy winters with frequent snow and fog, sunny summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. They have the following resources petroleum (reserves declining), timber, natural gas, coal, iron, ore, salt, arable land, hydropower. They also have natural hazards of earthquakes, most severe in south and southwest; Geologic structure and climate promote landslides. Environment current issues include woil erosion and degradation; water pollution; air pollution in south from industrial effluents; the capital is Bucharest.

These two were both issued in 1982 by Romania as well. They are much more complex and there is certainly a story to be told in each portrait of this lovely breed.

Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.
This stamp in the middle was issued in 1997 and the stamps on the left and right are brand new produced in 2001. The stamp on the left has the same image with a little different cropping as the stamp above from Koriakia.

This lovely female with her puppies is awesome in her expression. Tne stamp is new, issued by Sharjah in 2000.
Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens.

Staffa is another of the islands off the coast of Scotland that issues topical stamps. This set was put out in 1978 and has been a favorite for many years. They are becoming harder to find.

Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years.

This stamp was put out in 1999.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

A wonderful, 'happy dog' stamp issued by Tadjikistan in 2000.

Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's Northern Mecca. The set of stamps that this Dalmatian is from was issued in 2000 and was just the first of several new sets from that country.

This stamp was issued in 2000 by Republic of Turkmenistan.
Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Dalmatian issued in 1998. Definitely one that should be in a full collection.

Umm Al Qiwain is one of the United Arab Emirates. They issued a bright and attractive set of dog stamps in 1967. The Dalmatian was fortunate to be among them. This is the oldest stamp that we have available right now.

An unusual stamp to come across, this is the only stamp that we have of a brown Dalmatian rather than black. It was issued by Viet Nam in 1990.
Viet Nam is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and South China Sea, alongside China, Laos and Cambodia. It is slightly larger than New Mexico. The climate is tropical in south; monosoonal on north with hot, rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). The terrain is low, flat delta in south and north; hilly, mountainous in far north and northwest. Natural hazards are occasional typhoons with extensive flooding. Vietnamese is the official language with English increasingly favored as a second language with some French, chinese, and Khumer. It is a communist state with Hanoi the capital. The people achieved their independence from France on Sept. 2, 1945. VietNam is a poor, densely populated country that has had to recover from the ravages of war, the loss of financial support from the old soviet bloc, and the rigidities of a central planned economy.

What a fine choice for a beatiful Christmas Souvenir Sheet issued by Antigua & Barbuda in 1998.
Antigua & Barbuda are a pair of sister islands in the north east Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders.

The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.

An awesome souvenir sheet (all Dalmatians) from Kyrgyzstsan. a must for the Dalmatian collector.
Together with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan forms a region known as Central Asia. The area of Kyrgyzstan is almost completely mountainous and is subject to major earthquakes. It declared its independence with the downfall of the Soviet Empire in 1991. The set of stamps that this one comes from was issued in 2000.

This most recent souvenir sheet is from Liberia in north Africa.
Liberia is an independent republic which lies on the on the bulge of Africa between Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. The official language of Liberia is English but several local languages are more widely spoken. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the government and led to economic mismanagement and debt. A democratically elected government was elected in 1997; however, the war had severely damaged the economy through the loss of facilities and foreign investment.
I have also not found these stamps available separately, but the Dalmatian in particular would lose much if they were taken apart for individual sale. (see detail to the left)

This interesting combination of the Papillon with the Dalmatian was issued in 1998 by the Republic of Mali.
Landlocked in West Africa, straddling the Sahara, Mali is one of the poorest and most remote nations of the world. There were no stamps of the Dalmatian or the Papilon issued separaately, but the souvenir sheet more than makes up for it. It is not common and expensive when you find it.

Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. The climate is tropical; hot humid; one rainy season (October to May).

An outstanding Dalmatian front and center on this souvenir sheet from St. vincent.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Australian Terrier from 1998.

This lovely colorful souvenir sheet was issued by Sierra Leone in Africa in 1997.
Sierra Leone was Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months. I have not found the stamps available individually, although I can find reference to them being produced. As far as I know, we have only the Souvenir Sheet to represent this issue. (see detail to the right of the Dalmatian) It is important as part of a complete Dalmatian collection.

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including in 1999.

The Turks & Caicos Islands, part of the British West Indies, are a dependency of Great Britain and are located at the SE end of the Bahama Islands. Of about 50 Islands, only six are inhabited. The estimated population, in 1999, was just under 17,000.

Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

In 1974, ethnic differences within the British Colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands caused the Polynesians of the Ellice Islands to vote for separation from the Micronesians of the Gilbert Islands. The following year the Ellice Islands became the separate British colony of Tuvalu. Independence was granted in 1978. In 2000, Tuvalu negotiated a contract leasing its Internet domain name "tv" for $50 million in royalties over the next dozen years. The climate is tropical, moderated by easterly trade winds (March to November); westerly gales and heavy rain (November to March). It is one of the smallest countries on earth. The capital is Funafuti, note - adminstrative offices are located in Vaiaku Village on Fongfale Islet. Tuvalu does not have an embassy in the U.S. It does, however, have an UN office in New York City.

Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia. This is probably one of the most amazing mini stamps produced. There are forty breeds representated and they have managed to run a perforation line through nearly every one. Those that were missed by the holes are covered by a post mark! My, what an accomplishment. The Dalmatian is shown enlarged to the left.

St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.
