Dalmatian Card
from England

Our first card was issued by Wills in 1937 to be inserted in their 10-packs of "Wild Woodbine" Cigarettes. On the back it says, "A strong, decorative dog with pronounced sporting inclinations. Head fairly wide, long and flat, with moderate indentation between eyes. Muzzle long and powerful, mouth level. Ears thin and fine, with rounded tips. Shoulders clean and muscular. Forelegs straight and heavily boned. Hind legs well muscled. Feet round and compact. Chest deep but not too wide, with well-sprung, but not rounded, ribs. Back powerful, with muscular, slightly-arched loin. Tail tapering. Coat short, hard and fine. Ground colour pure white with round deep black or liver-brown spots. Eyes black or dark brown on black spotteds, yellow or light brown on livers. Eye-rims follow colour of coat."

This headstudy is from a set put out in 1940 by Players & Sons of Dog's Heads by Peter Biegel. On the back it says, "The Dalmatian has a long history but an obscure origin. It first came into prominence in England in the old coaching days, when it was employed as a guard against highwaymen and foot-pads. It was trained to run between the rear wheels of the coach, which led to its being called the Carriage Dog. Long after the danger from robbers had passed, it was fashionable to have a Dalmatian in attendance when traveling by coach. Attractive in appearance, being white with liver or black spots, the Dalmatian makes an excellent domestic pet."

I love this card from 1925, also put out by Player's and Sons in a series call, "Scenic Backgrounds." On the back it says, "This native breed of Dalmatia, on the Eastern shores of the Gulf of Venice, has been domesticated for at least two hundred years, and is a most attractive animal. His "spots" which should be evenly distributed, have given rise to his popular cognomen of "Plum-Pudding Dog." He is always born pure white, his spots developing some months afterwards. He possesses an instinctive fondness for the horse, and before the days of motors was often to be found accompanying a trap or carriage. Colour black or liver spotted on a white background. Weight 50 lbs. height at shoulder 20 ins."

Not all trading cards are issued by Tobacco companies. This one was put out by Amaran Tea in 1965 and was put into each carton of their tea leaves. On the back it says, "In the past the Dalmatian was much used as a carriage dog. It has great endurance and speed and works well with horses. Usual colours are black and white. The head should be long, flat and broad between the ears with no wrinkles; muzzle long and powerful, eyes set moderately apart. The ears are fine, spotted and broad at the base."

Horniman's Tea also put out a dog set in 1961 for inclusion in their 1/4 pound packets of tea. On the back it says, "Originally from Dalmatia, but flowered in England with horse and carriage. He loves the stables and was to be seen following coaches, sometimes preceding them and occasionally trotting under the pole between the leaders and the wheelers.
Spots are important and should be either black or liver on white. They should not intermingle and be in size from a 6d. to a 2/-piece, smaller on head, ears and extremities."

Both of these cards were issued in 1939 by Godfrey Phillips. The one on the left went in their packets with 10 cigarettes in them. The one on the right went in the 20-cigarette packets. On the back of the left one it says, "The Dalmatian was originally used to act as a runner, and to add dignity and importance to coaches and landaus. Although this occupation has now gone, this dog is still very popular, chiefly because of his attractive appearance and amiable temperament."
The right one is beautifully embossed for a nice texture. On the back it says, "The Dalmatian is very popular, chiefly because of his attractive appearance and amiable temperament."

This gorgeous card was issued by Gallaher's in 1936 as part of their First Series of Dog Cards. On the back it says, "The Dalmatian was one of the breeds beloved by our great-grandparents and in many old illustrations it is shown trotting by a horse or coach. One authority has stated that it is descended from the Old English Hound and was formerly used for hunting. Although it is not now used for this purpose it is noted for its keen powers of scent and follows instinctively. It has also a remarkable memory and can be easily trained. Unless it is attacked it is not pugnacious and it makes an excellent guard."

The next cards are actual photographs from 1939. These were issued by Pattreiouex for insertion in their Senior Service Cigarettes. The series was simply titled, "Dogs." On the back of the top one it says, "The Dalmatian has an inherited fondness for horses, and used formerly to run under carriages. This trait is useful for owners who ride.
GENERAL HINTS
RETRIEVING(6). The pup should be taught to obey signals. When he is, say, ten yards away, whistle and give the 'sit' signal. When he sits, go up and pat him. Then hold —up your hand, say 'stay' and retreat facing him. Go some yards away, whistle and pat your leg (the 'me up' signal). When he comes up at a gallop reward him. (Yeah, right!)

On the back of the bottom one it says, " The Dalmatian is extremely intelligent and easily trained to almost anything, an excellent companion dog for anyone who has facilities for exercising him.
GENERAL HINTS
TRAINING FOR TRAFFIC (3). Our puppy now understands the words of command and some signals. Take him to a quiet cul-de-sac and let him off the lead; carry some tasty scraps, call him up and give him these from time to time. If he goes off the pavement without orders, scold him, take him frequently across the road on the command 'over' and wave of the hand.

Carraras also put out a photographic series called, "Dogs and Friend" in 1936. On the back it says, "Dalmatians have recently become once again a most popular breed. Thirty years ago they were very fashionable, and then, as is often the case, the boom subsided, but nowadays every other person seems to own one. "Plum pudding" dogs, as they are affectionately called, are very obedient and wonderful to take out riding. No one appears to agree as to whether they came from Dalmatia or not. If you are buying a puppy you may find that it is pure white. The spots develop later."

This is a 1990 reprint of a card originally offered by Wills in 1940. Originals run over $400 each at this point. This is from a series called, "Puppies by Dawson" that is a collection of puppy drawings and observations on those puppies. On the back it says:
"PUCK" AND "MAJOR"
"I found them in a stable, nearly lost in a big bed of straw. If they hadn't been white I might have missed them altogether, as stables are seldom equipped with a studio light! Their mother kept a strict guard over them, and well she might, for they were rather a handful. There were five puppies in the family-- but only two got into my picture.

This wonderful card was issued in 1908, 99 years ago, by Edwards, Ringer & Bigg for insertion in their Klondyke cigarettes. On the back it says, "Probably had, as name seem to imply, its origin in Dalmatia, Austria. It was the recognised thing for the wealthy to have one of these dogs following whenever they drove out in their coaches, hence his second name "coach dog." The boys call him "plum pudding" dog. Good specimens are very difficult to produce; this accounts for scarcity. They are born white in color, the spots beginning to show in a few weeks. Weight up to 55 lbs."

Dalmatian Card

This lovely card was issued by Wills in 1915 as part of their Second Series. The first series from 1914 was reprinted in 1987, but they have not authorized a reprint of this set yet. On the back it says, "The Dalmatian was formerly known as the Coach Dog--a name bestowed upon it because it was frequently kept to attend upon traveling-carriages, and to guard them at night. When they ceased to be used for this purpose, the breed degenerated somewhat, though interest in this variety has been reviving of late years. It is a very interesting fact that Dalmatian puppies are always pure white at birth, without markings of any description. The spots begin to make their appearance when the puppies are about a fortnight old. The Dalmatian is a strong, muscular, and active dog, and is capable of great endurance and fair speed. The coat should be short and fine, and pure white in colour, with black or brown spots. Weight, about 50-55 lbs."

This card was issued for Hignett's Cigarettes in 1935. The same design was used for Ogden's Cigarettes as well in 1936. On the back it says, "Although never used as anything but a carriage dog and show specimen in Great Britain, the Dalmatian is fairly widely used on the Continent as we use Pointers. As a show dog it is very popular. In spite of its name, there is not evidence to prove that the breed originated in Dalmatia, and no exact data of its origin are available. The spot markings should be either wholly black or liver, and distinct as possible on a pearly-white ground. The markings do not appear until the puppies are about three months old."

These beautiful portraits were done by Leo Chambers for this special edition of Dogs Heads by Moustafa Cigarettes in 1924. They are hard to find and certainly worth having in ones collection. On the back it says, "This dog, half-hound and half-pointer by breed, was at one time highly popular. His spots are usually black, but sometimes liver-coloured. They do not develop in the puppy until he is three weeks old. His weight when fully grown, is from 50 to 55 lb. He is called the "spotted carriage dog." Now, however he is better known as a watch dog.

This unusual card was issued in 1950 by Oak Manufacturing in California. It is the only US made card that we have. On the back it says, "He is well titled the "Gentleman from DALMATIA." Originated in Dalmatia, a province of Austria. His many nicknames include "The English Coach Dog," "The Carriage Dog" and the "Spotted Dick." No matter what name, his most important talent has been his status as the one and only coaching dog.
"The instinct for coaching is born in the Dalmatian. He takes to a horse, as a horse takes to him, that is to say, like a duck to water. He is unusual not only as the only recognized carriage dog in the world, but he does not look like any other breed. His markings are distinctly his own.
