The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are

not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Dachshund shown above on the left is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Amurskaya. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Dachshund image from the overprint, put out by Kalmykia.
Kalmykia is in southwestern Russia, bordering the Caspian Sea. It is one of 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. It is a Black Sea oil port at the end of an oil line. In 1878 its turbulent modern history began when it was taken by Russia from Turkey. Following the fall of the Tsar, the caucasion peoples reasserted their independence and Turkey saw its chance to win back old territory. Its troops entered Batum in april 1918. From this time date letters handstamped Batumskaya Kontora during a shortage of stamps at the Post Office and thus begins Batums philatelic history. They have issuedat least three sets of dog stamps and this latest one is from 1999, which consisted of all puppies.

Cambodia is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It is slightly smaller than Oklahoma. The climate is tropical, rainy, monsoon season (May to November); dry season (December to April; little seasonal temperature variation. The terrain is mostly low, flat plains; mountains in southwest and north. The natural hazards are the monsoonal rains; flooding; occasional droughts. The current issues are illegal logging activities throughout the contry and strip mining for gems in the western region along the border with Thailand. Ethnic groups nsist of Khmer 90%, Vietnamese 5%, Chinese 1%, and others 4%. The languages are the official Khmer 95%, French and English. The government consists of multiparty democracy under a constitutional monarchy established on September 1993. The capital is Phnom Penh.

from Equitorial Guinea

This set was issued in 1979 to commemorate the Year of the Child.
Equatorial Guinea is located in Western Africa bordering the Bight of Biafra, between Cameroon and Gabon. The area is slightly smaller than Maryland. The climate is tropical, always hot and humid. The terrain: coastal plains rise to interior hills; islands are volcanic. Natural resources consist of petroleum, timber, small unexploited deposits of gold, manganese, uranium. Natural hazards; violent windstorms and flash floods.

Finland finally put out a dog series in 1998. These darling Wirehaired puppies were in that set.
During World War II, Finland was able to successfully defend its freedom and fend off invasions by the Soviet Union and Germany. In the subsequent half century, the Finns have made a remarkable transformation from a farm/forest economy to a diversified modern industrial economy; per capita income is now on par with Western Europe. As a member of the European Union, Finland was the only Nordic state to join the euro system at its initiation in January 1999. It is slightly smaller than Montana. The climate of Finland is cold temperate; potentially subarctic, but comparatively mild because of moderating influence of the North Atlantic Current, Baltic Sea, and more than 60,000 lakes. The official language is Finnish. The capitol is Helsinki.

Fujeira is one of the seven Emirates that combined in 1974 to form the United Arab Emirates. This set of dogs stamps predated that union in 1970. The name Fujeiria refers to the spring of water beneath one of the mountains. It is probably our earliest Wirehaired Dachshund stamp. I have perforated copies, but also some rare, imperfs which have smooth sides rather than the perforated edges.

Germany issued two matching dogs sets in 1995 and 1996. This wonderful Wirehaired Dachshund was from the first set in 1995. Both sets have become very expensive and rare. The different stamps have different images in the selvage (edge.)
Germany is located in Central Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, between the Netherlands and Poland, south of Denmark. It is slightly smaller than Montana. The climate is temperate and marine; cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers. The terrain consists of lowlands in north, uplands in center, Bavarian Alps in south. It has natural hazards of flooding. Some current issues: emissions from coal-burning utilities and industries contribute to air pollution; acid rain, resulting from sulfur dioxide emissions, is damaging forests; pollution in the Baltic Sea form raw sewage and industrial effluents from rivers in eastern Germany. The religions: Protestant 34%. Roman Catholic 34%, Muslim 3.7% other 28.3%. The language is German. The capital is Berlin.

Guinea is a republic on the west coast of Africa between Sierra Leone and Mali. They issued this wonderful set of stamps with diagonal perforations with a head study of a puppy in the upper right and the image of what it will grow up to be on the bottom left.
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

A new stamp from Hakasia issued in 2000.
Hakasia is located in the south of Serbia, next to the Sayan-Altay Mountains and Yenisey River and the the north Altay Republic. Its capital is the city of Abakan. The real name of Hakas people who speak Turkish is Koray people. They are composed of four tribes. Hakasia is devoted to its own language, culture and traditions and there is a university, technical institute, and institutes for linguistic, historical and literary researches in Hakasia. There are also various cultural and artistic institutuins, 4 theatres, library and museums as well as music and art schools. Hakas Turks are Christians, but they continue their Shamanist beliefs and traditions. Agriculture, stockbreeding and timber productions are the means of subsistence in the region. Breeding of sheep horses, cattle, and beekeeping are also the signicant means of subsistence.

Jersey is an island in the English Channel between England and France. It is overseen by the British Crown which is why this stamp bears the image of the Queen in the upper right corner. The painting on this stamp was apparently done by P. Layton and the set was issued in 1988.

This darling puppy stamp was put out in 1996 by Nicaragua in Central America. Below the image, it says, "Thinking of you."
Nicaragua is a Central American country that has had a turbulent recent history. In the 1980s, the country was racked by a civil war between the leftist Sandinista government and US-backed Contra rebels. Unemployment soared and annual hyperinflation reached 24,000%. Today, President Arnoldo Aleman, a right-wing businessman, is struggling to rebuild a country once defined by the Cold War conflict. To some extent, he�s succeeded. Although most Nicaraguans remain mired in poverty, economic growth has averaged nearly 5% a year under Aleman.

Poland issued a series of stamps in 1989 like the one above. They are all painted by J. Wysocki and have the wonderful head studies and above them, the silhouette of that breed of dog.
Poland is located in Central Europe, east of Germany and is slightly smaller than New Mexico. Climate is temperate with cold, windy, cloudy, moderately severe winters with frequent precipitation; mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The terrain is mostly flat plain; mountains along the southern border; Natural resources consist of coal, sulphur, copper, natural gas, silver, lead, salt, and arable land. Natural hazard of the area is flooding. The situation has improved since 1989 due to decline in heavy industry and increased environmental concern by postcommunist governments. Historically, an area of conflict because of flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain.

Aren't these a lovely pair of wire-hairs?
This stamp was issued in 1999.
Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps.

Turkmenistan is in south western Russia near Iran and the Caspian Sea. They have issued a number of dogs sets lately, but the only Wirehaired Dachshund is this one done in 1998.

Stamps Dachshunds with various coats

Cuban stamps are often difficult to come by since the US has an embargo against that country. For this reason, the ones that we have were typically brought in with collections from Canada or other countries. This series was issued in 1992 and the Dachshund stamp shows all three coat types in the single stamp. The only copies that I have were postmarked March 18, 1992.

Each year, Monaco issues a stamp to commemorate the International Dog Show being held in their country. As far as I know, Dachsies are the only breed that have had two stamps issued for them, in 1976 and 1988. The one on the left is the only stamp that we have that not only has all three coats, but both standard and miniatures in all three coats. The later stamp, on the right, has lovely head studies of the three types of Dachshune.
Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy. Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the House of Grimaldi). The Chief of State: Prince RAINIER III (since 9 May 1949); Heir Apparent Prince ALBERT Alexandre Louis Pierre, son of the Monarch (born 14 March 1958). There are no elections, the monarchy is hereditary. Monaco does not have an embassy in the US.

Our last multi-coat stamp is from the Russian State of Yakutia. It not only has three different coats, but three different colors as well. It was issued in 1999.
Most people know Yakutia from the game of Risk along with Kamchatka and Irikutz. Actually, Yakutia is the largest region in Siberia, known as Sasha-Yakutia. This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are forty breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through nearly every one. Those that were missed by the holes are covered by a postmark! My, what an accomplishment.

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.
Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country.
This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are eighteen breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through all but one. My, what an accomplishment. The Wire-haired Dachshund is shown enlarged to the right.
