Dachshund stamp from Afghan Dachshund stamp from Afghan

Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Dachshund stamp from Albania

Shqiperia is known to us as Albania. This wonderful stamp was issued in 1966 along with several other dog breeds. The dog is listed as a Teckel, which is the name for Dachshunds throughout much of Europe.
Albania is located 9in southeastern Europe, bordering the Adriatic Sea and Ionian Sea, between Greece and Serbia and Montenegro. It is slightly smaller than Maryland. The climate is mild temperate; cool, cloudy, wet winters; hot, clear, dry summers; interior is cooler and wetter. The terrain is mostly mountains and hills; small plains along coast. The natural hazards are destructive earthquakes; tsunamis occur along southwestern coast; floods and drought. Their religion is 70% Muslim. Poor and backward by European standards, Albania is making the difficult transition to a more modern open-market economy. Severe energy shortages are forcing small firms out of business, increasing unemployment, scaring off foreign investors, and spurring inflation. They have the poorest telephone service in Europe with fewer than two telephones per 100 inhabitants; it is doubtful that every village has telephone service.

Longhaired Dachshund
stamp from Amurskaya Dachshund stamp from Kalmykia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Dachshund shown above on the left is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Amurskaya. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Dachshund image from the overprint, put out by Kalmykia.
Kalmykia is in southwestern Russia, bordering the Caspian Sea. It is one of 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Dachshund stamp from Angola

The African nation of Angola issued a lovely set of dogs stamps in 1998. This lovely black and tan Dachshund was among them.
Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of islands that were forced to go together as a nation when they were given their independence from Great Britain. They are in the top right hand corner of the curve of Caribbean Islands. In 1994, they issued two sets of dog stamps to commemorate the Japanese Year of the Dog. This Dachsie stamp is from the set of small breeds.

Beyond barter and shuttle trade, the best long-term economic prospects for Amurskaya territory appear to be farming, food processing and packaging, as well as timber, and mining. Amurskaya is located in Russia, in the south of the Far East. More than one-third of the population live in the rural area. Since 1933 the death rate is higher than the birth rate. Due to the negative natural increase and migration from the region the total population of Amurskaya is intensely decreasing.

Dachshund stamp from Benin

The Republic of Benin is in Western Africa, bordering Nigeria. It may be noted that Benin, former Dahomey, has perhaps the "most beaten tracks by Europeans of any in Africa". The history of Benin is a succession of kingdoms, followed by years of communist rule and finally independence in 1990. The official language is French. In 1998, they issued a set of puppies from different breeds. This wonderful Dachshund was among them.

Dachshund stamp from Bulgaria Dachshund stamp from Bulgaria
Dachshund stamp from
Bulgaria Dachshund stamp from
Bulgaria

Bulgaria seems to have a love affair with Dachshunds. The top one of a black and tan was produced in 1964 with their first set of dog stamps. The one on the bottom left with the fox was issued in 1985. The one on the right is more recent, produced in 1989. Interestingly enough, it is listed as a cat stamp, since the girl is carrying a cat across the street and there is no note of the "long dog" in the background. For that reason, it is in very few Dachshund collections.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Dachshund stamp from
Czechoslavakia Dachshund stamp from
Czechoslavakia

These different types of stamps were issued in 1973 by Czechoslavakia. They used to be very common at the shows, but are getting harder to find.
The Czech Republic is a landlocked republic in Central Europe, comprosing the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and Silesia. The new state a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945. From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5% are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population. Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembles that of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most economically developed regions of Europe.

Dachshund stamp from Dagestan

This stamp was issued in 2001.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Dachshund stamp from Dominica

Dominica is an island in the Caribbean a bit south of Antigua & Barbuda (above.) They also issued a set of stamps in 1994 for the Year of the Dog. All of them are head studies on the soft blue background. This is the Dachshund stamp.
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the island a colony in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence, Dominca's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female prime minister in the caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years. It is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, DC. The climate is tropical and the terrain has rugged mountains of volcanic origin. It is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which are protected by an extensive natural park system. The official language is English. The capital is Roseau.

Dachshund stamp from Equitorial

This is one of the earliest Dachshund stamps that we have, put out by Equitorial Guinea in Africa back in 1977. The set that it came from had 20 different breeds -- one of the larger sets issued.
Equatorial Guinea is located in Western Africa bordering the Bight of Biafra, between Cameroon and Gabon. The area is slightly smaller than Maryland. The climate is tropical, always hot and humid. The terrain: coastal plains rise to interior hills; islands are volcanic. Natural resources consist of petroleum, timber, small unexploited deposits of gold, manganese, uranium. Dachshund stamp from
Fujeira

Fujeira is one of the seven Emirates that combined in 1974 to form the United Arab Emirates. This set of dogs stamps predated that union in 1970. The name Fujeiria refers to the spring of water beneath one of the mountains. It is probably our most unusual Dachshund stamp, since it is obvious that this is not a Dachshund at all, but probably a Basset Hound. However, the word "Dachshund" is plainly written on the left side, so I include it here for those who want a really complete set :-). Dachshund stamp from Grenada

Another unusual black and tan, Grenada and the Grenadines issued this set of stamps in 1995. Grenada is described as a spice island, for it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.
The Dachshund above is particularly nice with its elegant artistic rendering.

Dachshund stamp from Guernsey

Like the rest of the Channel Islands, Guernsey is steeped in history. Up to 6,500BC, the islands were in fact part of the French mainland until the Ice Age came to an end. Discoveries in the 20th century have shown evidence of mankind dating back to 5,000 BC (New Stone Age) when tribes, possibly from Spain moved here. All around Guernsey are traces of neolithic man, including defensive earth works, menhirs and dolmens. There are burial chambers built above the ground and several survive in remarkably good condition. This is a commerative stamp of the German Shepherd issued in 2001 by the Guernsey Dog Club in celebration of 100 years, 1901-2001.
This stamp from Guernsey was issued in 2001 to commemorate the 100 year anniversay of the Guernsey Dog Club, 1901-2001.

Dachshund stamp from Guyana

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Dachshund stamp from Karakalpakia

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This is a lovely unique image that was issued in 1999.

Dachshund stamp from Karelia Dachshund stamp from Karelia

These stamps were issued in 2000 from the Russian state of Karelia. Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, to which it once belonged. My bet is that it is actually a hunting dog of some sort, since it is too long legged to be a good Dachshund. We include it because it is listed in the references as a Dachshund.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

This darling stamp was issued by New Zealand on June 16, 1999. The cartoon drawing is sort of hard to see, but the Bulldog is on the right in front of the Old English Sheepdog, the Dalmatian and the Greyhound. They, and the Dachshund are after the fuzzy toy dog with the BIG bone. Dachshund stamp from
Paraguay
This striking stamp was issued by Paraguay, a small country in South America between Argentina and Brazil. This series was issued in 1984.
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.
Paragury is located in Central South America, northeast of Argentina. It is slightly smaller than California. It has a subtropical to temperate climate. The capital is Asuncion. A large percentage of the population derives their living from agricultutal activity, often on a subsistence basis. It is landlocked; lies between Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil; the population is concentrated in southern part of the country.

In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens.

Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, a small political elite, who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months. This is a colorful new stamp issued in 2000.

Archaeological evidence also shows that one group of people settled on islands from the Bismarcks to Polynesian and became the ancestors of all Polynesians, some eventually returning to the outlying islands of Solomon islands. The first documented European contact was made in 1568 by the Spanish explorer, Alvaro de Mendana. Mendana discovered alluvial gold on Guadalcanal and, perhaps thinking he found the source of King Solomon's great wealth (the Biblical King Solomon's mine), named the islands the "Isles of Solomon ". Because of Mendana's Spanish heritage, many of the islands in the Solomon Islands bear original Spanish names. Great Britain declared a Protectorate in 1893 over the southern Solomons, adding the Santa Cruz group in 1898 and 1899. The islands of the Shortland group were transferred by treaty from Germany to Great Britain in 1900. The Islands were granted independence in 1978.
Communial, familial and clan ties remain very strong in Solomon Islands. Most people consider themselves to be part of an immediate family of 200 and can trace back their ancestors at least ten generations. The Pijin word "wantok" - which derives from "one talk" meaning people from the same language group - is used to indicate blood relatives in the extended family. This stamp was issued by the Solomon Islands in 1994. The stamp has a referral in the upper left corner to Hong Kong, 1994 but that was also the Year of the Dog, so it might very well have had a dual purpose as well.

Dachshund stamp from Staffa

There are several islands off the coast of Scotland that issue their own postal stamps. The stamps can be used to mail letters from the island to the mainland, but are not of use outside of Scotland, nor can they be used to mail letters back to the island. They are actually considered local stamps rather than national. The set that this stamp came from was issued in 1978 and can still be found in most collections.

Dachshund stamp from St.
Vincent

St. Vincent and the Grenadines are a series of islands in the southern part of the Caribbean. Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this interesting head study issued in 1984, more than 15 years ago.

Dachshund stamp from Surinam

Suriname is a South American country on the north east coast of the continent between Guyana and French Guiana. This gorgeous stamp was put out way back in 1976, over 25 years ago, but still retains its beauty. On the left is the identification of Teckel. These are becoming more difficult to get ahold of.

Dachshund stamp from Tadjikistan

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including this Dachshund that was issued in 2002.

Dachshund stamp from Transkei

Transkei, in South Africa, was one of ten territories assigned to the black majority population in the 1950s as part of the South African government's policy of apartheid, or racial segregation. In 1994 it was incorporated into the province of Eastern Cape. This stamp was issued in 1993 before that incorporation.

Dachshund stamp from Udmurtia

An interesting stamp of the Dachshund put out by Udmurtia in 2001.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Dachshund.

Dachshund stamp from Umm al
Qiwain

Umm al Qiwain is the second smallest of the United Arab Emirates after Ajman. In 1972, they issued a most unusual set of stamps that combined a breed of dogs with a type of cat. For some reason, the Dachshund puppy was paired with a gray tabby kitten.

Dachshund stamp from Umm al
Qiwain

Normally, I list stamps from the same country together, but Umm al Qiwain issued such radically different stamps that I have separated them for individual explanations. The one above is actually a 3-D stamp that shows the dog in depth. I can't imagine that they stuck to letters easily, since it is very thick, almost like a prize in Cracker Jacks. But they do have stick-um on the back and are offical recognized stamps. The same country issued a set of butterflies and a set of flowers, all with the 3-D motife. It is probably one of the most unusual items that I have for Dachsie people.

Dachshund stamp from Vietnam

This impressive stamp was issued by North Viet Nam in 1989. The writing on it is in French, a hold over from the French occupation before the war?
Viet Nam is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, Gulf of Tonkin, and South China Sea, alongside China, Laos and Cambodia. It is slightly larger than New Mexico. The climate is tropical in south; monosoonal on north with hot, rainy season (mid-May to mid-September) and warm, dry season (mid-October to mid-March). The terrain is low, flat delta in south and north; hilly, mountainous in far north and northwest. Natural hazards are occasional typhoons with extensive flooding. Vietnamese is the official language with English increasingly favored as a second language with some French, chinese, and Khumer. It is a communist state with Hanoi the capital. The people achieved their independence from France on Sept. 2, 1945. VietNam is a poor, densely populated country that has had to recover from the ravages of war, the loss of financial support from the old soviet bloc, and the rigidities of a central planned economy.

Dachshund Souvenir Sheets

Dachshund stamp from
Cambodia

Souvenir sheets are larger than normal stamps and typically when a country issues a matched set of stamps, like six to ten different breeds, they will issue one souvenir sheet in conjunction with the set. Perforations for an actual stamp are usually around a nice area of the larger stamp. This wonderful portrait of all three varieties was produced by Cambodia in 2000 and is canceled on the
first day of issue of September 6.

The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Dachshund stamp from Cuba

Cuban stamps are often difficult to come by since the US has an embargo against that country. For this reason, the ones that we have were typically brought in with collections from Canada or other countries. This series was issued in 1992 and the Dachshund stamp shows all three coat types in the single stamp. The only copies that I have were postmarked on the first day of issue, March 18, 1992.

Each year, Monaco issues a stamp to commemorate the International Dog Show being held in their country. As far as I know, Dachsies are the only breed that have had two stamps issued for them, in 1976 and 1988. The one on the left is the only stamp that we have that not only has all three coats, but both standard and miniatures in all three coats. The later stamp, on the right, has lovely head studies of the three types of Dachshune.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
