Chinese Crested stamp from Abkhazia Chinese Crested stamp from Dageston

This Russian stamp on the left is from Abkhazia. It was issued in 1999 and is truly a beautiful portrait of a Crested.
The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. Whatever the reason, we are all winners when such lovely stamps are issued.
The stamp shown on the right is a Russian Overprint from Dagestan. With inflation out of control, the Chinese Crested stamps framed stamps that had been printed were no longer worth enough to mail a letter. In desparation, the governments took blocks of five stamps, overprinted them with a new image and a new value and sold them for long enough to be able to print the new stamps that were due to come out (the one on the left from Abkhazia). This was a one time production and these overprints are destined to become collectors' items in a very short time. The overprints come as a set of five stamps in five different colors with the same overprinted image like the set shown to the right.

Chinese Crested stamp from Bhutan

This stamp is from Bhutan and was issued in 1997. Eastern Bhutan is the Himalaya of legends. Bhutan is a tiny, landlocked country, squeezed between China and India, the two most populous countries, takes its native name -- Druk Yul -- from the fierce storms that sweep down out of the Himalayan Mountains. Druk Yul means "land of the thunder dragon." Bhutan is the last surviving Buddhist kingdom in the Himalayas and its deeply devout Buddhist culture bears a strong resemblance to that found in Tibet. Wary of foreign influence, Bhutan has full diplomatic ties with only 16 countries and sightseers were barred from the country until 1974. Even now, Bhutan limits the number of tourists to just 4,000 a year.
This stamp is from an outstanding, rather expensive set of six different breeds.

Chinese Crested stamp from Bulgaria

Since Chinese Cresteds are a relatively new show dog, there were not many stamps that had been issued to honor it. Although that is starting to change, this stamp was the first. It is from Bulgaria and was issued in 1991.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Chinese Crested stamp from Grenada

This nifty stamp is from Grenada and was also issued in 1997. Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Chinese Crested stamp from Karakalpakia

This stamp was issued in 1999.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally-induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp has just been issued in 2001.

Chinese Crested stamp from Karelia Chinese Crested stamp from Aestravek

Chinese Crested stamps framed This new Russian stamp is from Karelia. Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, which it once belonged to. I am tempted to believe that the picture may be a Xolo, instead of a Chinese Crested, because of the lack of furnishings.

Chinese Crested
stamp from Mordovia Chinese Crested
stamp from South Ossetia

The break-up of the former Soviet Union has been a gold mine for collectors of unusual stamps. The economy is in a tail-spin and in an effort to generate income, the independent Russian states have started issuing new stamps for the world to collect without having to provide the accompaning postal service. Whatever the reason, it is a win-win situation when we are offered new stamps of Chinese Cresteds as nice as these from Mordovia and South Ossetia
Mordovia is located between Moscow and the Volga River and is bordered by the republic of Chuvashia on the east. Mordovia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the new Russian Federation. Mordovia is a largely agricultural region. Like most of the other republics, Mordovia has started issuing new postal stamps including this great Chinese Crested.
I found some very interesting information when searching for a history of Ossetia. It lies near the Black Sea in the Russian region of Georgia. Today’s 700,000 North and South Ossettians are herdsmen and horsemen, probably descended from the Scythian warrior nomads of ancient Greek times.
Like the first settlers of Yorkshire they use the word ‘Don’ for river and, like the people of Ossett, they chose the fleece as an emblem. A fleece also appears at the centre of Ossett's coat of arms.
Is there a connection? Some versions of the Greek legend of Jason and the Argonauts tell us that on his long homeward voyage Jason took the Golden Fleece by river journey from the Black Sea to the North Sea – a route well known to the Vikings who are thought to have founded Ossett. In addition, Ossett is a Viking place name which may mean 'Osla's seat' or 'ridge camp'. Was Ossetia founded by Vikings? Perhaps. In the meantime, the local government of both North Ossetia and South Ossetia have issued a few fascinating stamps, including the Chinese Crested from the same original as the Mordovia one.

Chinese Crested stamp from Cambodia

Chinese Crested stamp from Cambodia This beautiful souvenir sheet is from Cambodia and was issued in 1997. It is my favorite of all the Chinese Crested stamps, partly because it is the only Crested stamp to include the Powder Puff variety with the hairless. Except for the souvenir sheet, only the hairless variety has been represented on stamps. To the left is a detail of the Powder Puff Chinese Crested and I think he is absolutely adorable. What a lovely way to finish a Chinese Crested set of stamps!

Chinese Crested Cards

Chinese Crested card from England

Every breed deserves something truly unique and this is it for the Chinese Crested. This incredible card was issued by the Goodwin & Co. to go in their Old Judge cigarettes in 1890! It is part of their series "Dogs of the World.", and it is nearly 110 years old. Although it shows a bit of wear, it is in remarkably good condition. I have never even seen another copy of this card in all of my searches. It should be the center of somebody's most important collection.

I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
