Collie stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts.

Collie stamp from Afghanistan Collie stamp from Afghanistan Collie stamp from Afghanistan

All the above stamps were issued by Afghanistan. The stamp on the left is a 'smooth' collie while the middle and right are both 'rough' collies. Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Collie stamp from Abkhazia

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Collie stamp from Altai

This stamp from Altai was put in 2004.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see the number of Russian stamps issued below. Altai is also from the Russian block and is in southeast Western Siberia. It was noted as the largest agricultural producer in the Soviet Union.
The disintegration of the Soviet Union is bringing to light the enormous diversity of the indigenous people who were kept under its rule. The Altaics were a nomadic, herding people for millennia. They had a native language and customs. Several related groups are now considered more self-ruling, such as Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan and Altai. In 1997, Altai started to issue unique stamps and some of them were of different breeds of dogs.

Collie stamp from Angola

Angola is in Africa near the Congo and on the Atlantic Coast. Portuguese is the official language of the government and business, but only about 42 percent of the population of 10 million is literate, 56 percent of males and 28 percent of females. The current issues facing the country are overuse of pastures and subsequent soil erosion attributable to population pressures; desertification; deforestation of tropical rain forest, in response to both international demand for tropical timber and to domestic use as fuel, resulting in loss of biodiversity; soil erosion contributing to water pollution and siltation of rivers and dams; inadequate supplies of potable water. Angola is a developing country at war, and civil unrest has been ongoing since the country's 1975 independence from Portugal.

Collie stamp from Antigua & Barbuda

Antigua & Barbuda are a pair of sister islands in the north east Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not always at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders. In 1994, they put out two sets of stamps in honor of The Year of the Dog. There were 12 large breeds and 12 small breeds. This lovely Rough Collie was in the set of large breeds. This is a fairly common stamp.

Collie stamp from Argentina

This stamp came from a set of 6 that had exquisite drawings issued in 1999 by Argentina. The illustrations are by artist Gustavo Deveze.
Argentina, Country in South America, occupying most of the southern half of the continent east of the Andes Mountains. It is the second largest country in South America after Brazil. It's capitol and largest city is Buenos Aires. Argentine consists of diverse terrain, stretching from the tropics in the north to the subpolar region in the south. In the middle of the country are the Pampas, vast fertile prairies that produce much of the country's agricultural wealth. Since the late 19th century, Argentina has exported large amounts of agricultural goods, including meat, wool and wheat. The country also has an extensive industrial sector. Argentia has had a volatile political history. Its most famous president Juan D. Peron was very popular with the working and lower classes and concentrated on developing the country's industrial sector during the 1940s and 1950s. However he polarized Argetnine Societ and was ousted by the military in 1955. The military controlled the Argentine Government at different times throut the nations history. The military stepped down in 1983. Argentina recommited itself to a democratic government at this time.

Collie stamp from Askamyana

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. Unfortunately, I do not have the original stamp issued to match the overprint.

Collie stamp from Batum Collie stamp from Batum

Batum issued both of the above stamps, and you will note that the stamp below, issued by the Bernera Islands, is a duplicate of the stamp above right, from Batum. Frequently we find that several countires will issue a 'look alike' stamp from another country.
Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, near Turkey. It is a Black Sea oil port at the end of an oil line. In 1878 its turbulent modern history began when it was taken by Russia from Turkey. Following the fall of the Tsar, the caucasion peoples reasserted their independence and Turkey saw its chance to win back old territory. Its troops entered Batum in april 1918. From this time date letters handstamped Batumskaya Kontora during a shortage of stamps at the Post Office and thus begins Batums philatelic history.

Collie stamp from Bernera Island

Bernera is in the Western Isles of Scotland. It has a population of about 300 that is sustained mostly by lobster fishing. Stamps issued by the islands off the edge of Scotland are typically used to post mail from the island to the mainland of Scotland. You cannot mail letters back to the island with them, mail outside of Scotland, or mail within Scotland itself. Issuing unique stamps is a source of income for many of the Scottish islands. This nifty Collie was issued in the 1970's.

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. Collie stamp from Grenada

Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands, which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Collie stamp from Guyana

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French, who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek. Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana. In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. Collie stamp from Karakalpakia

A beautiful head study of the Collie issued by Karakalpakia.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Following World War II, Korea was split, with the northern half coming under Communist domination and the southern portion becoming Western-orented. KIM ChongIl has ruled North Korea since his father and the country's founder, president KIM Il-song, died in 1994. After decades of mismanagement, the North relies heavily on international food aid to feeed its population while continuing to expend resources to maintain an army of about 1 million. North Korea's long-range missile development and research into nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons and massive conventional armed forces are of major concern to the international community. In december 2002, North Korea repudiated a 1994 agreement that shut down its nuclear reactors and expelled UN monitors, further raising fears it would produce nuclear weapons.
The area of North Korea is slightly smaller than Mississippi. The climate is temperate with rainfall concentrated in summer. Collie stamp from Udmurtia Collie stamp from Udmurtia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of five "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Collie shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Udmurtia. The stamp on the left was ultimately issued also by Udmurtia with the Collie image from the overprint from Udmurtia.
Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Collie issued in 1998.

Collie Envelopes

Collie stamp from USA

This hand-painted cachet envelope is from the American First Day Cover Society “Court of Honor series.
Eight popular breeds were selected by the U.S. Postal Service for its Block of Four Dog Stamps issue of September 7, 1984, its release timed to coincide with the American Kennel Club's 100th anniversary convention. The AKC, largest organization of its type in the world, is the official registrar of purebred dogs in the U. S., sanctions shows and sets breeding standards.
When you compare a huge, shaggy Newfoundland dog to a tiny Chihuahua, or an apartment-dwelling well-groomed poodle with her pink "hair bow" to a sleek racing Greyhound, it seems difficult to realize that all dogs are members of a single species, along with wolves, jackals and coyotes. The distinguishing feature which separates dogs from their wild cousins is the upturned tail. Dogs are the oldest domesticated animal. Archeological evidence has been found which links dogs to human culture as far back as several millennia B.C.
Today, dogs are part of millions of American households. Most are affectionate pets; some serve as guard dogs or Seeing Eye dogs, and some have performed remarkable feats of heroism in protecting their masters. They have well earned the title of "man's best friend."

In 1979, Freda Dickie Weaver introduced her hand-painted cachets with the Sc. 1787 “Seeing For Me” stamp issue. Collectors were mesmerized with the beauty and the life-like appearance of her cachets. They immediately became much sought after covers which commanded a premium price. This attracted many skilled artists to the first-day cover field. Through Freda Weaver’s efforts, hand-painted covers have become a major collecting interest. Freda’s covers are extremely complex and detailed. They are hand-painted in life-like colors that accurately portray the subject at its time of use. The demand for her work far exceeds her capacity to produce. Her attention to detail makes the covers living bits of time. She is, without question, the leading cachet artist of our time.

OLD DRUM
Black and Tan Coonhound
Died 1870 - Warrensburg, Missouri

"Old Drum" is the focal point on this magnificent envelope. He stands alone on the left. The eight chosen stamps are shown to the right.
Old Drum, a hound dog, was shot dead in 1870 by Samuel "Dick" Ferguson, nephew and ward of Leonidas Hornsby, an irate neighbor who thought Drum had been killing his sheep.
Drum's owner, Charles burden, sued Hornsby (who also happened to be his brother-in-law), and the case eventually went to the Missouri Supreme Court where Burden won the case. But it was in the courtroom in Warrensburg that Burden's lawyer, future Senator George Graham Vest, delivered his famous tribute: "the one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world....is his dog."
A statue of Old Drum was erected, and still stands, on the current Johnson county Courthouse lawn (the old courthouse where Vest delivered his famous speech still stands elsewhere in town). Burden was awarded fifty dollars.
Dick Ferguson, the reported shooter of Old Drum, later moved to Oklahoma, where he himself died of gunshot wounds in the town of Anadarko.

The Collie in contrast to the Alaskan Malamute, is accustomed to working in much gentler climates, originally having been used for sheepherding in Scotland. The Collie is somewhat like the girl working in a 5-and10 cent store who is discovered by a movie or TV talent scout, for Britain's Queen victoria saw some of these beautiful dogs at Balmoral castle, and once they became favorites of the Queen, instant fame followed. Their magnificent coats of white and golden brown, their dependability, and their natural instincts as protectors, especially of children, endear these dogs to thousands of American families.
