The COCKER SPANIEL
We have three of these lovely photos "Dogs & Friend" issued by Carreras in 1936. Each photo is one of the 50 breeds in the series. One the back of the card is the description by Lady Kitty Ritson: "One is apt to think of a Cocker Spaniel as a pet dog only, forgetting that in reality it is a sporting dog. However, there is no better pet for children, as it is nearly always good-tempered, indeed, it is inclined to be rather too sentimental. Cocker Spaniels are rather messy feeders, as thier long ears are apt to fall into their food, and it is a good plan to clean them after every meal. Keep your Cocker Spaniel's figure by giving it plenty of meat, not biscuit."

The SPRINGER SPANIEL
This is the second card in the series of 50, the Springer Spaniel, also issued in 1936 and described by Lady Kitty Rittson. The following is shown on the back of the card: "This Springer Spaniel has won 28 Challenge Certificates. A gun dog, according to Kennel Club rules, has also to win at Field Trials before it can boast of the title of "Champion." When a dog has accomplished this he is what is known as a "dual" champion. All Spaniels originally came from Spain, and their name is a corruption of the word, and all breeds of Spaniels are related to each other. The Springer was one of the earliest varieties. Most Spaniels are even-tempered and obedient."

COCKER SPANIEL PUPPIES
This card is the third in the series of photos by carreras titled "Dogs & Friend" issued in 1936. The description follows, by Lady Kitty Ritson. "The Cocker Spaniel pups in this picture are 10 weeks old, and they are among the most delightful of puppies. They look over-weighted with their long ears and their solemn heads. Make certain that puppies have access to perfectly clean and fresh water at all times, and also that they have a shady place in which to lie when it is hot. People often forget this, with disastrous results. A piece of sacking rigged up over a pole or stick will often b e sufficient to provide a patch of shade."

Is essentially a working dog used for rough shooting, his small robust body enabling him to penetrate the gaps in thick hedgerows. This is one of the cards issued by Players & Sons to be released in 1940. However due to the paper shortage during World war II, the few that were printed are out of sight in price, well over $100.00. Then a reissue of the "Dogs Heads (Eire)" came out in 1994. I have one copy of the reissue. On the back of the card it says: "The Cocker is the most popular show dog and has topped Kennel Club registration for several years. In the breed's early days it was used largely in the shooting of woodcock--hence the name--but its modern rapid rise to showring eminence has overshadowed its abilities as a gundog. Undoubtedly its popularity is greatly due to its merry, likeable character and to its many beautiful colour combinations. Some consider that this popularity threatens the existence of the breed as a working dog, but there are many showbred Cockers which appear successfully at field trials or provide sport for their owners on a day's shooting."

The back of the card has the following description: "Originating in Spain in the 14th century, these Spaniels were brought through France into England, and underwent their best development during 1800. These are the smaller type of Spaniel and are used to flush woodcock for sportmen. Like other gun-dogs, they do not damage the shot bird while holding it their mouths."

(Cocker Spaniel)
A beautiful drawing by Lucy Dawson, and described by Lucy Dawson on the back of the card. These cards were issued by Wills cigarettes in 1940. However only a few were printed due to the paper shortage in World War II. If you can find a 1940 original version they are well over $100.00 each. I have one only of an authorized reproduction of the 'Puppies by Dawson-Reprint of 1940" issued in 1990. These were enclosed in Wills manufacturers of Gold Flake, Capstan, Three Castles and Embassy cigarettes. The following is the description: "Too bad to give him that name, but his colour suggested it! I am glad to say he didn't approve of whisky as a beverage for himself. His big brown eyes and silky black and white coat, with a lovely "perm", would have made him loved in any home--even without his affectionate little ways."

These Cocker puppies are card no. 6. Shown on the back of the card: "The Cocker is a brainy and cheerful little dog if of a good strain. Choose a pup from lively parents."

GENERAL HINTS
" SELECTING A PUP (6). In choosing a pup remember that, as a rule, he will grow up with the disposition of his dam and nearly her size. Therefore make careful enquiries about mother. In looks he will follow his sire. This is most obviously demonstrated in the mule, which has a donkey for sire."

John Player & Sons issued these great full-bodied paintings by artist Arthur Wardle in 1931 for enclosure in the small packages (10) of cigarettes. The back shows the following: "Cocker Spaniels which are among the most popular sporting dogs in the country, were perhaps derived from a breed of small size Spaniels reared for sporting purposes in Wales and Devonshire. Cockers, owing to their small size and affectionate and merry disposition, make ideal companions. Colour : blue roan, liver roan, black, red, liver and tri-colour. At recent Kennel Club Shows there have been more Cocker Spaniels than any other breed, and the highest honours have been awarded them. Height: about 12 in. Weight: 25-28 lb."

Another Players issue, this time titled 'Dogs-Scenic Background' and issued in 1925. A nice description follows: "These well-known dogs were probably derived from a breed of small-sized Spaniels reared for sporting purposes in Wales and Devonshire. Cockers have been steadily increasing in popularity during recent years, roan, black and tricoloured dog being especially favoured. Their small size, and affectionate and merry diposition make them ideal companions, though they are essentially sporting dogs, deriving their name from their use in woodcock shooting. Field Spaniel.
Altho not a Cocker Spaniel I have decided to put this lovely Field Spaniel card on this page. A description is on the back of the card: This card came from a set of 50 issued by Wills Cigarettes in 1937. "Field Spaniels have little chance at Field Trials in competition with their longer legged cousins, but breeders have recently been successful in evolving a more rationally built specimen than the old long and low type, and a new era of popularity is probable for this much maligned but really beautiful example of the Spaniel family. He has a beautifully chiselled head, and a soft, thick silky coat. Colours glossy black: liver; roan and tan; black, white and tan; liver roan; blue roan; black and white; and black and tan. Height at shoulder about 14 ins. Weight 45 to 55 lbs".

Players & Sons issued this great headstudy by artist Peter Biegel in a set of cards titled 'Dogs Heads by Biegel' in 1940. They. too, were inserted in the small (10) packs of cigarettes. The printing on the back is as follows: "It is not without reason that the Cocker Spaniel is one of our most popular breeds today, for it possesses such an abundance of qualities that it is difficult to imagine a more complete canine companion to man. It is beautifully coated and of convenient build; it has an amiable, merry nature; it is alert as a house-dog and efficient as a gun-dog; it is both loyal and intelligent; it is, in short, well-nigh bred to perfection. Fortunately, unlike some breeds, the ability of the Cocker Spaniel in the field has not suffered throught its ever-increasing appearances on the show bench, where it enjoys remarkable success."

The following is shown on the back of the card: "The Cocker, the smallest and one of the most popular members of the Spaniel family, probably got its name from being used for working coverts during woodcock shoots. There was originally only one variety, namely Red and White; to-day, however, there are Black, Golden, Blue roan, Red and Golden or Lemon Roan Cockers. COCKER SPANIELS
John Player & sons issued this lovely set of 25 cards with paintings by artist Arthur Wardle in 1940. The following is shown on the back of the card: "The Cocker Spaniel's show ring popularity is enormous and for many years the breed has led the Kennel Club's list of registrations. Undoubtedly the Cocker's ideal nature and its many attractive colours are responsible for this, but many gundog enthusiasts regret that the breed is getting into hands of people who have no intention of shooting over their dogs. They contend that breeding for show points and laying stress on features of no value to a working dog will turn the Cocker into a show dog only, and spoil him for true gundog work. Originally the breed was used in the shooting of woodcock (hence the name) and its work was to flush the birds from dense, thick undergrowth. That Cockers can still work is shown at modern field trails, but the workers are disproportionately few considering the breed's number."

Hignett cigarettes issued these very nice paintings in 1936. They were enclosed in their small packages of ten cigarettes. The back of the card has the following: "The Cocker is the most popular and most varied in colour of all Spaniels. At English shows this variety usually heads the list of entries, and at the 1927 Cruft's Show the total entry was 751, a record for the breed. Its handy size, merry manner, and wide variety of coat colour probably account for the boom in the breed. It is one of our most ancient bird dogs and was originally used in the shooting of woodcock, and thus became known as a "Cocker." At field trials Cockers rank next in popularity to English Springers; they are great workers."

Another card fron Hignett issued in 1936. This is of the Field Spaniel. A description on the back of the card follows: "This is a breed which, it is thought, originated from the crossing of English Springer, Cocker and Sussex Spaniels. It is low on the leg, and was bred so that it could easily get under gorse and brushwood. At one time exhibitors carried the low-to-ground and long body ideal to extremes, so that the breed became almost a monstrosity, and useless in the field. Fortunately a reaction set in and, after determined efforts, the Field Spaniel became once more a good-looking and capable animal."

    COCKER SPANIEL.
Sanders Crystal Jelly and Sanders Deluxe Custard both contained a single card from this set of 20 cards issued n 1926. On the back of the card:
"POINTS. Weight 18 to 20 lbs. Black or black and white, or tan, liver, roan, etc., are the Cocker colours. They are sprightly little dogs, of great beauty, with short bodies, wavy coats and heaps of "feather" never of course curly, fore legs short but strong, just enough to keep the body well off the ground, but low enough to allow them to get through any under-growth. Ears very long and well feathered. Action and style is a great thing to be looked for in the Cocker."

    COCKER SPANIELS.
John Player & Sons issued these 'Dogs-Scenic Background' in a series of 12 cards in 1924. They were enclosed singley in PLAYERS NAVY CUT CIGARETTES. The cards were decorative on the back with the following description:
"These favourite dogs were probably derived from a breed of small-sized or Blenheim Spaniels reared for sporting purposes, and have been steadily increasing in popularity during recent years, roans, blacks and tricoloured dogs being especially favoured. Their small size, and affectionate and merry disposition, make them ideal companions, though they are essentially sporting dogs, deriving their name from their use in woodcock shooting. No breed that has ever been exported to America from this country has caught on like the Cocker, and to-day he is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. At English shows of the present day the entries of Cocker Spaniels are very numerous; indeed at a recent exhibition of the Kennel Club there were more of this variety than of any other breed. Height 10 to 12 inches. Weight 20 to 25 lbs. is considered ideal."

A fantastic find for your collection!
Goodwin "Dogs of the World" was one of the very first sets to be included in cigarette packages in 1908. This particular set was included in OLD JUDGE cigarettes 99 years ago. I have one of these for some lucky person. The name of the cigarettes and the Cigarette Factory address are shown on the back of the card. The card is in good condition considering the age.

    Cocker Spaniel Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Cocker Spaniel history.
