Black and Parti Colored
American and English
Cocker Spaniels
It is often difficult to tell the difference between American Cocker
Spaniels and English Cockers, especially when you realize that many
of these stamps are twenty or even thirty years old. So I have decided to play it safe and put all of the Cocker Spaniels together. Like so many stamps, most are beautiful no matter what breed they are.
Since there so many lovely Cocker Spaniel stamps, I have broken them
down into the AKC color categories of: Buff Cockers here and Parti colored, Black and ASCOB on this page.

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their
income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the
hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal
services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its
either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They
started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear
how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers
3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the
crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North)
and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical.
At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such
freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. This stamp was issued
in 1999.

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such
the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local
governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market
and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is
a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out
by Buriatia in 1999.

A nifty stamp was done in 1973, the dog is listed as a Cockerspaniel Zlaty. It was
issued by Czecholsavakia and is fairly common.
The Czech Republic is a landlocked republic in Central Europe, comprosing
the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and Silesia. The new state
a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up
during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945.
From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In
November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia
again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic
conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both
groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia
was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily
dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental
climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest
city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language
of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion
is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5%
are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population.
Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate
the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembles that
of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most
economically developed regions of Europe.

This stamp from Dagestan was issued in 2001.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian
Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the
most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that
of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is
the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those
nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages,
cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place
in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times
of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Much newer is this stamp from the Commonwealth of Dominica. It is listed as a
Cocker Spaniel and I have only one.
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by
Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs.
France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the
island a colony in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence,
Dominca's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration
was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female
prime minister in the caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years.
It is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, DC.
The climate is tropical and the terrain has rugged mountains of
volcanic origin. It is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean"
due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which
are protected by an extensive natural park system. The official
language is English. The capital is Roseau.

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South
America near the equator.
Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country
located in South America. The name 'Guyana' is derived from an Amerindian word
meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three
mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.
The British founded Guyana in 1781. It passed for a while to the French,
who largely rebuilt it, and in 1784 to the Dutch, who called the capital Stabroek.
Regaining control in 1812, the British government renamed it British Guiana.
In 1966 it became an independent Guyana.

A picturesque stamp issued by Hakasia in 2001.
Hakasia is located in the south of Serbia, next to the Sayan-Altay Mountains

to its own language, culture and traditions and there is a university,
technical institute, and institutes for linguistic, historical and
literary researches in Hakasia. There are also various cultural and

A stamp from Kalmykia put out in 2001.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks
settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were
originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province
was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War,
when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to
have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass
deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge
of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently
revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children
are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as
the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert,
its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central
Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another
23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of
lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less
than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it,
the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats.
If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the
end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued
in 2000.

The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights,
boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western
and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of
its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the
coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries
all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic,
self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts
or the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

Economic development was spurred in the late 19th century with a railroad
linkup to France and the opening of a casino. Since then, the principality's
mild climate, splendid scenery, and gambling facilities have made
Monaco world famous as a tourist and recreation center. Monaco is
located in western Europe, bordering the Mediterranean Sea on the
southern coast of France, near the border of Italy. It is about three
times the size of The Mall in Washington DC. It has no natural
resources and no natural hazards. It is the second smallest independent
state in the world (after Holy See); almost entirely urban with a
population of about 31,987. Its official language is French, with
English, Italian and Monegasque. It is a constitutional monarchy.
Its independence was in 1419 (beginning of the rule by the
House of Grimaldi). The Chief of State: Prince RAINIER III (since
9 May 1949); Heir Apparent Prince ALBERT Alexandre Louis Pierre, son
of the Monarch (born 14 March 1958). There are no elections, the monarchy
is hereditary. Monaco does not have an embassy in the US.

I like this stamp from Mongolia. It was done clear back in 1978, but the expression
in all three dogs is very attractive. Mongolia has not put out a lot of stamps,
so it is even nicer that they did one of a Cocker or English Cocker.
Mongolia is located in Northern Asia, between China and Russia. It is
slightly smaller than Alaska. The climate is desert, large daily
and seasonal temperature ranges. The Gobi Desert is located in the
south-central region. Mongolia has dust storms, grassland and forest
fires, drought, and "zud" which is harsh winter conditions. The people
have limited natural fresh water resources in some areas. The capital
is Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia achieved its independence from China
July 11, 1921. The unemployment rate is 20%. Mongolia is totally
landlocked, therefore economic activity traditionally has been
based on agriculture and breeding of livestock.

This stamp was issued by Mozambique in 1979.
Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in
its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of
May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The
Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing
but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a
single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the
African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century
when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa
between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in
the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to

Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight,
sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises
upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and

These are included simply because they were the only overprints that were
available in past years, in this case 1993. There was a limited number released to the outside
world and then they were all gone. These scans are for historical significance
only since the originals are absolute collector's items now. Be sure to get

available and the small number of those that I was able to get will be gone very

The Republic of Somaliland (North West of Somalia) situated on the tip
of the Horn of Africa, was formed in 1991 after separating from southern
Somalia. The people of Somaliland experienced more than three years
of bitter civil war (1988-1991) resulting in the deaths of nearly
60,000 people, massisive displacement both internal and to other
countries, and a near total destruction of infrastructure, communications
systems, banking and public services.
Following a period of
inter-clan conflict, the Somali people have settled internal disputes
using traditional peace-building methods, and they have started to
rehabilitate amd reconstruct their damaged country. A stable
administration has been formed, with a smooth transition of leadership
following the death of former President Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, in
May 2002. Demobilisation of former militia fighters into a national
police force and army has created an environment of security within
national boundaries.

Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands'
sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th
century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which
lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved
in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s.
Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political
environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes
in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery
of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on
the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf

Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of
the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were
tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other
island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for
Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect
breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves.
In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with
breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas
are the main export from the island.

Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and
mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar,
bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches,
especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine,
but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged
coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested
and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is
the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands,
which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and
English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The
population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly
26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

meaning; land of many waters - and indeed it is a land of many waters- with three
mighty rivers and many tributaries, creeks and waterfalls.

Sierra Leone was a British colony to which
freed slaves returned in the late 1700's.
After Independence in 1961, a small political elite,
who exclusively profited from
the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive
governments. Little of
this national income trickled down to benefit
the rest of the population. After much
fighting and insurrection the UN was finally
convinced to send a peacekeeping force that
was in the news for many months.

Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent
wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural
attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount
Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National
Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti
National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million
wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely
beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania
issued a couple of different sets of dog stamps, including this beguiling
stamp in 1994.

This is a souvenir sheet and I believe that the lower stamp is an English Cocker.
The detail below is of the drawing on the left. Even though it is meant to be
the same dog, I think, the drawing looks more like an English Setter head.
Interesting what shorter ears and no body reference will do for perception.
Not for sale at this time.
My thanks to Sharon for her help with dating and details. I will eventually
convince her to add the last few souvenir sheets and unique items that she
has in her collection.

This hand-painted cachet envelope is from the American First Day Cover
Society “Court of Honor series.
Eight popular breeds were
selected by the U.S. Postal Service for its Block of Four Dog Stamps
issue of September 7, 1984, its release timed to coincide with the American Kennel Club's 100th anniversary convention.
The AKC, largest organization of its type in the world, is the official
registrar of purebred dogs in the U. S., sanctions shows and sets
breeding standards.
When you compare a huge, shaggy
Newfoundland dog to a tiny Chihuahua, or an apartment-dwelling
well-groomed poodle with her pink "hair bow" to a sleek racing
Greyhound, it seems difficult to realize that all dogs are members of
a single species, along with wolves, jackals and coyotes. The
distinguishing feature which separates dogs from their wild cousins
is the upturned tail. Dogs are the oldest domesticated animal.
Archeological evidence has been found which links dogs to human
culture as far back as several millennia B.C.
Today, dogs are
part of millions of American households. Most are affectionate
pets; some serve as guard dogs or Seeing Eye dogs, and some have
performed remarkable feats of heroism in protecting their masters.
They have well earned the title of "man's best friend."

In 1979, Freda Dickie Weaver introduced her hand-painted cachets with
the Sc. 1787 “Seeing For Me” stamp issue. Collectors were mesmerized
with the beauty and the life-like appearance of her cachets. They
immediately became much sought after covers which commanded a premium
price. This attracted many skilled artists to the first-day cover
field. Through Freda Weaver’s efforts, hand-painted covers have
become a major collecting interest. Freda’s covers are extremely
complex and detailed. They are hand-painted in life-like colors that
accurately portray the subject at its time of use. The demand for her
work far exceeds her capacity to produce. Her attention to detail makes
the covers living bits of time. She is, without question, the leading
cachet artist of our time.
OLD DRUM
Died 1870 - Warrensburg, Missouri
"Old Drum" is the focal point on this magnificent envelope. He stands
alone on the left. The eight chosen stamps are shown to the right.
Old Drum, a hound dog, was shot dead in 1870 by Samuel "Dick"
Ferguson, nephew and ward of Leonidas Hornsby, an irate neighbor
who thought Drum had been killing his sheep.
Drum's owner, Charles burden, sued Hornsby (who also happened
to be his brother-in-law), and the case eventually went to the
Missouri Supreme Court where Burden won the case. But it was in
the courtroom in Warrensburg that Burden's lawyer, future Senator
George Graham Vest, delivered his famous tribute: "the one
absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish
world....is his dog."
A statue of Old Drum was erected, and still stands, on the
current Johnson county Courthouse lawn (the old courthouse where
Vest delivered his famous speech still stands elsewhere in town).
Burden was awarded fifty dollars.
Dick Ferguson, the reported shooter of Old Drum, later moved to
Oklahoma, where he himself died of gunshot wounds in the town
of Anadarko.

Featured on the stamp to the right
are two hounds, or hunting dogs, the Black and Tan Coonhound and
he American Foxhound,
issued by the U. S. Postal service on September 7, 1984,to coincide
with the American Kennel Club's 100th anniversary convention.
The AKC, largest organization of its type in the world, is the official

Its ancestors having arrived in America with some of the early settlers,
the American Foxhound certainly has as much right to the term
"American" as those who brought it here. Like other dogs of its
kind, the Foxhound is used primarily in field trials and for hunting.
Hunting dogs may operate singly or in packs, the latter method being
a special favorite in England with riders following on horseback as
in many a traditional English Print. Of the eight dogs pictured on
the stamps of the American Dogs Block of Four issue, these two are
probably the least likely to serve only as household pets as they
are bred strictly for the hunt. Scott 2101

St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in
the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to
embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South
Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight,
sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises
upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and
brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the spanish
word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the
white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served,
so let me know if you are interested.
* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very
reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
