not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post
Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with
a new image and a new value. The Chow Chow shown above on the right
is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Komi. These stamps come in a
set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in
some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never
saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There
is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never
designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until
the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued
with the Chow image from the overprint, put out by Abkhazia in 1998. There is
a second pair below from Ingushetia.

world and then they were all gone. These scans are for
historical significance only since the originals are absolute
collector's items now. Be sure to get a set of the new overprints.
As far as I know, there were 100 of each overprint
available and the small number of those that I was able to get
will be gone very quickly. The sets of overprints consist of 5
stamps each in a different background color.

Gambia issued this stamp in 1994 to commemorate the Year of
the Dog in Hong Kong. To the right is the detail of the Chow, which as you
can see is a copy of the stamp that Hong Kong issued in 1970, which was also
the Year of the Dog, but 24 years earlier. The statue is of a Foo Dog.

Togolaise is located in Western Africa, bordering the Bight of Benin,
between Benin and Ghana. It is slightly smaller than West Virginia.
The majority of the population depends on subsistance agriculture.
Coffee, cotton and cocoa are the major export crops. The capital,
Lome, is a regional commercial and banking center, although its
position relative to neighboring countries has been eroded in recent
years because of political and economic difficulties. Fish is an
important part of the Togolese diet, but Togo does not have a
developed fishing industry. The primary goal of the U.S. government
in Togo is to promote respect for democracy and the rule of law.
