This drawing of the Bull Terrier is No. 23 in a series of 25 from Cofton Collections "Dogs 2nd Series-Reprint of 1963" and issued in 1988.

This set of 48 Horniman Tea cards photographed by C.M. Cooke, was issued in 1961 and were included in all 1/4 lb. packets of Horniman Tea. The Bull Terrier is card No. 18 in the set and a description is on the back. "Not a true Terrier in that it was never built to go to ground, and fashioned originally from a Bulldog and the extinct White English Terrier. These dogs were bred to fight in the pits, particularly in the mining districts. In appearance they have undergone vast improvements recently, particularly in the egg-shaped head and the strong jaw. Ears, one time cropped, are now smart and erect."

Carreras Ltd. issued this set of photos titled "Dogs & Friend" in 1936. The Bull Terrier is described on the back of the card by LADY KITTY RITSON. "The Bull-terrier is closely related to the Bull-dog, and shares with that breed the distinction of being one of the most typical of English dogs. Originally, before public opinion became more humane, these dogs were used for professional dog fighting, and also for baiting bears, foxes and other animals. Luckily such horrible practices are now forbidden, and the Bull-terrier remains a sporting dog and a wonderful companion. The male dogs are rather inclined to fight, but this habit can be checked when they are young."
Bull Terrier Card 3 (Carreras Dogs and Friend, 1936)... SOLD OUT


Barbers Tea "Dogs" were issued in 1961. One of these cards was enclosed in each package of Barbers Tea. A description of the Bull Terrier is printed on the back of the card. "As can be gathered from its name this breed is descended from the bulldog and the all-white was created in the 1850's by the efforts of Mr. James Hinks. The dog is now popular all over the world, and it is exported to the U.S.A. and India in increasing numbers. The coat is short and smooth and its height is 19-22 inches, weight 40-50 lbs."
Bull Terrier Card 4 (Barbers Tea, 1961)... $4.95 each


Wills "Dogs" were issued in 1937, and were enclosed in Wild Woodbine Cigarettes. The description of the Bull Terrier is included on the back of the card: "A descendant of the fighting dogs of the "pit." Head almost egg-shaped, fairly long and deep, not too wide. Muzzle tapering, but of great strength. Mouth level with strong, regular teeth. Ears small and thin, erect or semi-erect. Eyes sunken, almond-shaped and very dark. Nose black. Neck fairly long and very powerful. Shoulders strong and muscular. Chest broad and deep. Body short and powerful with rounded ribs. Forelegs straight and strong. Hind legs muscular and well let down at hock. Feet round and compact. Tail short and tapering from root to tip. Coat short, harsh and sleek. Colour: pure white, brindle, red and combinations of black, red and other colours."

This lovely photo is put out by a company in Modena, Italy called Service Line, in 1993. The dog in the photograph is not identified. The back of the card has the #80 on it and the title of the series "DOGS & CATS".

Players & Sons issued this set of 50 cards from paintings by Arthur Wardle in 1940 titled "Dogs Heads(Eire)" This card is an authorized reproduction by Imperial Publishing. These cards were reprinted in 1994. The Bull Terrier is card No 39 in this set of reproductions and the following is printed on the back. "A descendant of the old fighting dogs, which were bred from the old-time "leggy" Bulldogs and Terriers, the Bull Terrier as a show dog owes its existence to a James Hinks of Birmingham, who by selective breeding produced the all white specimens. A few years ago some breeders decided to bring back colour into the breed, and have succeeded in producing some very fine animals which have competed successfully against the best whites. There is also another variety, the Staffordshire, a closer relative of the fighting dogs, which has now attained show-ring eminence. Deafness, which was very prevalent among whites at one time, has now been bred out."

Pattreiouex "Dogs" were issued in 1939 and were enclosed in Senior Service Cigarettes. The back of the card says, "The Bull terrier is quick, game and an excellent all round dog. If you want brains, don't buy a pup with a receding skull.
GENERAL HINTS
SELECTING A PUP. Examine his mouth to see that his teeth meet properly, i.e. that he has a level mouth. A slight tendency either way can sometimes be cured by massage before the teeth change, but a 'level mouth' is best. A pup which will make a good companion later will have wide open candid eyes and a broad head."

This is another lovely photo by Pattreiouex in the same set of "Dogs" as above. These photos were enclosed in Senior Service Cigarettes. This one says, "There are three varieties--the white; the party coloured, with points the same as the white; and the Staffordshire, which has more brains room than the others.
GENERAL HINTS
EYES. Eyes vary in colour with the breed of dog, though some breeds, such as Spaniels, have eyes of various colours. Yellow eyes, usually denote a bad disposition; dogs with reddish or dark eyes are trustworthy. The good companion dog has wide open alert looking eyes. Avoid pups with small, half shut eyes--these are usually found in terriers of decadent strain."

"JAMES"
This is a reprint put out in 1990 of a set that Wills originally issued in 1940 of "Puppies by Dawson". Lucy Dawson gives you a brief description of this darling Bull Terrier puppy, "James" on the back of the card. "'James' was very serious-looking -- perhaps he was thinking about having to grow up into a tough fellow like his father, and judging from the short work he made of his dinner, he was certainly doing his best to do so. There was no need to tell him a meal was ready. He nearly swallowed his dish with it -- his mouth seemed large enough."

This lovely painting by Arthur Wardle was issued by Players in 1931 and titled "Dogs by Wardle-Full Length". On the back it says, "A generation or two ago the Bull Terrier was frequently associated with rogues and vagabonds of the Bill Sikes type, but he now holds a high position among the terrier varieties, because of his sterling qualities. For pluck, gameness and indomitable courage he has no superior, while as a companion he is staunch and true as steel. In former days his ears were well-cropped as a protection against opponents in the pit, but as cropping is now abolished, his ears are left in their natural state, erect or semi-erect. Colour; white, brindle, the former being far more popular. Height; 15-18 ins. Ideal weight about 50 lb."
The image on the right was printed in the same year and was designed to be a transfer. The writing is backwards so that when it is stuck on a surface, the words are readable.

John Sinclair issued these "Champion Dogs" in 1938. These are a series of real photos. A brief description is on the back of the card. "Winner of Championships at Cruft's, Darlington and Leeds, also numerous First Prizes and Challenge Certificates. Ch. Brendon Bang is the sire of numerous winners, including
Ch. Animation of Coefen.
Owned by. Mrs. G. M. Adlam, Preston Road, Brighton."

Another lovely photo in the "Champion Dogs" series of real photos issued by John Sinclair in 1938. On the back it says, "Won his first Challenge Certificate at the Metropolitan and Essex Championship show, 1935, second Challenge Certificate at Leeds Championship Show, 1936, and third at Edinburgh Championship Show, 1936, and his fourth at Cruft's Championship Show, 1937.

Bull Terrier Card 14 (Sinclair Champion Dogs, 1938)... SOLD OUT


This card is No. 41 in a series of 50 titled "Dogs-Scenic Background" issued by John Player & Sons in 1925. The following is a description of the Bull Terrier as shown on the back of the card. "A generation or two ago the Bull-Terrier was frequently associated with rogues and vagabonds of the type of Bill Sikes. He was bred and trained as a vermin-killer and a fighting dog, combining the dash of the Terrier with the fighting instinct of the Bulldog. His ears were well cropped, as a protection against opponents in the pit. About fifty years ago there came into fashion the pure white strain with terrier character predominating, and this game and handsome animal is now the recognised type. Height 14 to 18 ins. Weight from 15 to 50 lbs."

Player & Sons issued this beautiful painting by Peter Biegel titled "Dogs Heads by Biegel" in 1940. Description on the back says, "In the late 18th and early 19th centuries the cruel sports of bullbaiting and dogfighting existed side by side in England. Since dogfighting required fierce and speedy combatants the so-called sportsmen of the day crossed the Bulldog with the terrier, and obtained a dog admirably suited to their purpose in the Bull Terrier. When legislation (in 1835) made dogfighting illegal, Bull Terriers became competitors in rat-killing contests. It was from the white stock of these tough dogs that Mr. Hinks in the 1860's bred the handsome loyal animal we know today. Its inherent ferocity still remains, but the well-trained dog will not reveal it unnecessarily. White and coloured dogs are equally acceptable for exhibition."

An unusual card issued by Ty-Phoo Tea Co. in 1955. The card had to be cut out from the packaging hence no writing on the back of the card. Very few of these actually survived from the cut-outs. I have only one of these.

This series of "Champion Dogs" was issued by Ardath in 1934. The dog on the front is Ch. Brandon Gold Standard. The back is an abbreviated version of the standard of the day, shown to the right.
Bull Terrier Card 18 (Ardath, 1934)... $9.95 each




Gallaher "Dogs A Series" were issued in 1936. The series included 48 cards of different breeds. The description of the Bull Terrier is on the back says, "The Bull Terrier is the result of an attempt made by dog breeders at the end of the 18th century to produce a dog for the dog-fighting and bull-baiting pit that would combine the quick movements of the Terrier with the strength and fighting powers of the more ponderous Bulldog. It is a great-hearted animal and a first-rate companion and guard. Though slow to anger it can, if attacked, give more than it gets--a characteristic inherited from its ancestors of the fighting ring. There are two colours, white and white with brindle or red markings, known as "coloureds"."

Godfrey Phillips "Our Dogs" were issued in 1939 and enclosed in de Reszke Cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card: "This hardy, courageous breed was created by interbreeding the fighting Bull Terriers with White English Terriers. There are now four varieties--White, coloured, miniature and Staffordshire, the last named being direct descendants from the old fighting dogs."

This Dr. Ballards Pet Food card was issued in 1950 in Canada. The description on the back is written in both English and French: "The Bull terrier dates back about 100 years. He was formerly called the gladiator of the canine world. As such he had to be of great strength, greater agility and the greatest courage. Later he obtained the title of "The White Cavalier" and still bears that distinction today. He is an extremely friendly dog and thrives upon affection, yet is always ready for a fight and frolic. The Bullterrier breed was originally established by breeding a bulldog to a white English terrier and later crossed with a Spanish Pointer. Today the Bullterrier is a recognized breed in itself--a gladiator of perfect form.

"OUR PUPPIES"

Godfrey Phillips issued this set of 30 cards in 1936. The title of this series is "Our Puppies" and they were included in packs of de Reszke Cigarettes. The Bull Terrier is No. 1 in the series. A brief description is on the back of the card. "This is a hardy, courageous breed. There are now four varieties--white, coloured, miniature, and Staffordshire."
Bull Terrier Card 20 (Godfrey Phillips Our Puppies, 1939)... $14.95 each


Gallaher issued this set titled simply "Dogs" in 1934. These cards were enclosed in Gallaher's De Luxe Cigarettes. On the back it says, VELHURST VIKING "The Bull Terrier was made from the Bulldog towards the end of the 18th century, for the Bulldog was too slow in the dog-fighting pits, although its strength and courage were greatly to its advantage. Therefore, it was attempted to produce a breed of dog that had some of the quick movements of the Terrier and retained the strength and fighting powers of the Bulldog. They are immensely strong, very agile and great fighters. The Kennel Club instituted classes for this breed in 1877. The dog illustrated is a typical example of the present day type and is owned by Captain S. Phillips. He is considered to be the best headed dog bred for forty years."

Hignett Bros. issued this set of 50 cards titled simply "DOGS" in 1936. The Bull Terrier is card No. 37. These cards were enclosed in Hignett's Cigarettes. The back of the card says, "The Bull Terrier originated in the days of dog fighting, when the then leggy Bulldogs were crossed with terriers to produce an active, courageous dogs for the "pit." The white variety was first bred by James Hinks of Birmingham, probably by crossing with the old White English Terrier, and, possibly, with Pointers and Dalmatians. Latterly, coloured Bull Terriers have become very popular, and Staffordshires (an old type, but new to the show ring, and chiefly kept by a few breeders in the Potteries) have recently appeared on the bench. In appearance they are the nearest approach we have to the old fighting dogs."

W.D. & H.O. Wills issued this "Dogs A Series" in 1914. The Bull Terrier is No. 22 in a series of 25. An excellent description is printed on the back of the card. "His courage and tenacity, unsurpassed even by that of the Bulldog, have given to the Bull-terrier a reputation for invariable quarrelsomeness and ferocity of temper. That this is an exaggeration is now admitted, although, being a born fighter, he needs a firm hand to keep him in thorough discipline; when properly brought up no dog is more affectionate, and docility and intelligence are highly developed. Although possessing the qualifications of a good house-dog, he needs a great deal of outdoor exercise to keep him fit. He is an excellent water dog, and as a companion in the country he is unexcelled. A good Bull-terrier should have a pure white coat, without any marking, and a fine tapering tail." This lovely card was officially reprinted in 1987.

Artist Arthur Wardle painted this series of 20 cards issued by John Player & Sons in 1926. This set is titled "Dogs by Wardle A Series" and were enclosed in Player's Cigarettes. The Bull Terrier shown is card No. 16. The back of the card gives a wonderful description that is almost identical to that on Card 1 above. "A generation or two ago the Bull-Terrier was frequently associated with rogues and vagabonds of the type of Bill Sikes. He was bred and trained as a vermin-killer and a fighting dog, combining the dash of the Terrier with the fighting instinct of the Bulldog; his ears being well cropped, as a protection against opponents in the pit. Moustafa issued the "Leo Chambers Dogs Heads" in 1924. On the back it says, "The bull terrier is a very game dog. He should be white in colour and have a long, wedge-shaped head, small ears. His body is short and strong, his legs straight and muscular. His fairly short tail should be well carried in line with the back. He is good-tempered and hardy, and is well suited for the position of friend to the family.

Bull Terrier Playing Cards

Sorry, we don't have any complete sets of playing cards. These were from collections of antique cards and there is no way of knowing how old they are or where one might find more of them. They are certainly a part of Bull Terrier history.


This playing card was issued in 1996 by U.S. Games Systems, Inc. It was printed in Belgium and the lovely illustrations were done by Tomas Markevicius as part of the Dogs of the World Card Collection. The Bull Terrier is the eight of diamonds. To the right is a copy of the back of the cards from this set.

Rare German Playing Card from the 1980's. On the back it says,
"Character:
The Bull Terrier, despite its somewhat fierce appearance, is a gentle dog and utterly reliable with children, especially the bitch, which will literally let them climb all over her. However, if provoked by another dog, this terrier will happily fight to the death. The Bull Terrier never lets go! It is also a fine guard. It may let an intruder into your house, but one thing is certain; it won't let him out again!
Coat:
Short, hard and lying flat. White, with or without coloured markings on head, or predominantly coloured.
Size: 18-22kg

I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.
