Briard Stamps
For being such a rare breed, Briards are blessed with a wealth of interesting
stamps!
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia.
It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout
its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has
been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called
the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in
modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The
exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated
to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas.
They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited
fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing
and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population
continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and
medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political
uncertainties.

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such
the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local
governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market
and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is
a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out
by Buriatia in 1999.
Briard Buriatia Stamp 1... $4.95 each
Another issue from Buriatia in 1999.
Briard Buriatia Stamp 2... $4.95 each
Issued in 2001, this is our newest Briard stamp and it is a stunner. It was printed
by the Republic of Central Africa. Central Africa Republic (CAR), landlocked republic in central Africa,
bordered on the north by Chad, on the east by Sudan, on the south
by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and on the west by Cameroon.
A former french colony, which became independent on August 31, 1960,
the CAR was known as the Central African Empire from 1976 to 1979
under the autocratic rule of self-styled,emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa.
The CAR has an area of 622,984 sq mi. Bangui is the Capital. French
is the official language and tribal languages.

A nice headstudy from Evenkia.
Evenkia is in the far northern region of central Russia. The native people were nomads
who depend on hunting and reindeer for their livelihood for centuries. The Soviet government
tried to bring these people under their rule but the climatic conditions are very harsh
and it was difficult to exploit the natural resources, so much of the country was still
undominated when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. This is the first set of dog stamps
issued by the remote region of Evenkia, put out in 1999.
Briard Evenkia Stamp... $4.95 each
This darling stamp was issued by Germany in 1996. It comes from a very expensive
set. Germany is located in Central Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North
Sea, between the Netherlands and Poland, south of Denmark. It is slightly
smaller than Montana. The climate is temperate and marine; cool,
cloudy, wet winters and summers. The terrain consists of lowlands in north,
uplands in center, Bavarian Alps in south. It has natural hazards of flooding.
Some current issues: emissions from coal-burning utilities and industries
contribute to air pollution; acid rain, resulting from sulfur dioxide
emissions, is damaging forests; pollution in the Baltic Sea
form raw sewage and industrial effluents from rivers in eastern Germany.
The religions: Protestant 34%. Roman Catholic 34%, Muslim 3.7% other 28.3%.
The language is German. The capital is Berlin.

Guinea-Bissau is in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between
Guinea on the south and Senegal on the north. In 1994, 20 years after
independence from Portugal, the country's first multiparty legislative and
presidential elections were held. An army uprising that triggered a bloody
civil war in 1998, created hundreds of thousands of displaced persons. Guinea-Bissau's
transition back to democracy will be complicated by a crippled economy devastated
by civil war and the military's predilection for governmental meddling. This stamp
was issued in 2001.
Briard Guinea Bissau Stamp... $5.95 each
A 'happy face' on this Briard issued in 2001 by Hakasia.
We take their word for the breed of dog. Hakasia is located in the south of Serbia, next to the Sayan-Altay Mountains
and Yenisey River and the the north Altay Republic. Its capital is
the city of Abakan. The real name of Hakas people who speak Turkish is
Koray people. They are composed of four tribes. Hakasia is devoted
to its own language, culture and traditions and there is a university,
technical institute, and institutes for linguistic, historical and
literary researches in Hakasia. There are also various cultural and
artistic institutions, 4 theatres, library and museums as well as music
and art schools. Hakas Turks are Christians, but they continue their
Shamanist beliefs and traditions. Agriculture, stockbreeding and timber
productions are the means of subsistence in the region. Breeding of sheep
horses, cattle, and beekeeping are also the signicant means of subsistence.
Briard Hakasia Stamp... $5.95 each
As we mentioned, the break-up of the Russian empire has
been a real boon for collectors of
topical stamps. Nearly every new state
is desperate for income and one way to
get some is to issue attractive stamps
that will be collected for their
beauty, not to mail letters. This is
one of those lucky finds. Kalmykia
issued a small set of dogs including
this Briard in 1999 and Buriatia used the same image for their stamp
in 1999 also. I have been told that these might actually be Picard Shepherds, or
Berger De Picard in their native France.

Briard Buriatia Stamp(right)... $4.95 each
This stamp issued by Karelia was put out in 2001.
Karjala and Karelia are one and the same country. It is an autonomous
republic within Russia with 800,00 inhabitants, only 11.1% are Karelian.
Russians are the vast majority. About 90,00 people speak Karelian (Uralic
language close to Finnish) out of an ethnic group out of 145,00 in Russia.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights,
boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western
and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of
its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the
coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries
all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic,
self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts
for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.
Briard Karelia Stamp... $4.95 each
The US has an embargo against Korea so any stamps
that you find typically have come into the country
in a collection from Canada or another country.
This stamp was issued to commemorate the 'Year
of the Dog' in 1994. The official word from Korea is that
this is a Briard, but gosh, that must be a wild guess.

One of the oldest Briard stamp is this one
from Laos, issued in 1986. At first
glance, it is not the most attractive,
but surely one of the most unusual. Laos is located in southeastern Asia, northeast of Thailand, west of
Vietnam. Burma, Cambodia, China, Thailand and Vietnam all border Laos.
Laos is slightly larger than Utah. The climate is tropical monsoon.
Laos is a Communist state. They gained their independence from France
on July 19, 1949. The government of Laos - one of the few remaining
official Communist states - began decentralizing control and encouraging
private enterprise in 1986. Laos is the world's third-largest illicit
opium producer. It has a population of 5,777,180.
Briard Laos Stamp... $6.95 each
Landlocked in West Africa, straddling the
Sahara, one of the poorest and most remote
nations of the world, Mali put out this beautiful Briard
stamp in 1997. This is a very
attractive stamp and not at all hard
to find right now.
Briard Mali Stamp... $4.95 each
Monaco has put out two Briard stamps
over the years, and this first one was
issued in 1977 to commemorate the
Exposition Canine Internationale.
It is beautifully done and coincidentally,
this is the oldest Briard stamp we have.
The second Briard stamp from Monaco
was put out in 1982, also to commemorate
the Exposition Canine Internationale.
Actually, this is possibly not a Briard,
since there are two dogs called the
Greater Pyranese and the Lesser Pyranese.
The smaller dog may be the Lesser Pyranese.
We offer it since it certainly looks like
a Briard and in an effort to be complete,
it should go with the set.

A rare find indeed, from Mozambique, celebrating the life of
Louis Pasteur.
Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in
its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of
May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The
Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing
but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a
single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the
African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century
when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa
between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

I found some very interesting information when searching for a history of
Ossettia. It lies near the Black Sea in the Russian region of Georgia. Today’s 700,000
North and South Ossettians are herdsmen and horsemen, probably descended
from the Scythian warrior nomads of ancient Greek times.
Like the first settlers of Yorkshire they use the word ‘Don’ for river and,
like the people of Ossett, they chose the fleece as an emblem. A fleece also
appears at the centre of Ossett's coat of arms.
Is there a connection? Some versions of the Greek legend of Jason and
the Argonauts tell us that on his long homeward voyage Jason took
the Golden Fleece by river journey from the Black Sea to the North
Sea – a route well known to the Vikings who are thought to have founded Ossett.
In addition, Ossett is a Viking place name which may mean 'Osla's seat' or
'ridge camp'. Was Ossettia founded by Vikings? Perhaps. In the meantime, the local
government of both North Ossettia and South Ossettia have issued a few fascinating
stamps, including this lovely Briard in 1998.

Para Timor produced this lovely body pose and headstudy in 2000. East Timor is
an area of Indonesia that recently voted to become independent. There is much unrest
still since the current government does not want to give up power.

Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian
Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of
6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula.
With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan
and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the
local government started issuing stamps.

Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been
independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's
Northern Mecca. The set of stamps that this Briard came from was just issued
in 2001. I love the combination of the Briard with the Bouvier des Flandres.
Briard Tatarstan Stamp... $5.95 each
You will note that this stamp is identical to the Hakasia above. Many
times countries issue copies of other countries stamps. The Hakasia
is a little brighter in color.
Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a
unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the permafrost, and
local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in
the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and
cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Touva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms
a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet
Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and
develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes
from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Like so
many other former Russian states, the diversity of the people is starting to be
felt as the original culture, traditions and religion are gaining more followers

Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow
to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain
with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its
climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer
is short, rainy and cool, autumn is very cloudy
(often there are almost no sunny days from October
till January), foggy and rainy. This not very
friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts
(or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish
people maintained their culture heritage there at
least for five thousand years. Their religion is
also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar,
The Highest Being) and His assistants governing
various elements. With the dissolution of the
Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local
republics and as such they now issue new topical
stamps for the world market including one of
the nicest, this wonderful one of a darling Briard.
Briard Udmurtia Stamp... $5.95 each
This nifty Briard offering was issued
by Uganda in 1998. There were eight
stamps in this set of very unusual dogs
and breeds, like a Newfoundland rescuing
a child in a lake, and a Saluki and
an Afghan Hound. Uganda achieved independence from the UK in 1962. The dictorial regime
of Idi AMIN (1971-1979) was responsible for the deaths of some
300,000 opponents; Guerilla war and human rights abuses under Milton
OBOTE (1980-85) claimed another 100,000 lives. During the 1990's the
government promulgated non-party presidential and legislative elections.
Uganda is located in eastern Africa, west of Kenya. The climate is
tropical; generally rainy with two dry seasons (December-February,
June to August). Uganda is landlocked; fertile, well-watered country
with many lakes and rivers. English is the official Language, taught
in grade schools. The capital is Kampala. Coffee is the major export
crop and accounts for the bulk of export revenues.
Briard Uganda Stamp... $7.95 each
Briard Cards
This deck of cards was produced in Japan several years ago. There
are several breeds in the deck and each breed is sold as a single
card separately. The Briard in it is the Nine of Clubs.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served,
so let me know if you are interested.
*
Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for
club trophies as well!)
* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very
reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if
you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may
find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always
count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and
the stock is not always constant.
* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for
your breed.
