Boxer Stamps
Cropped Boxers
The world has gone crazy with new Boxer stamps and it couldn't happen to a nicer breed. There are so many wonderful Boxer stamps that I have decided to separate them into pages for "Cropped" Boxers and
"Uncropped" Boxers, and for fun, a separate page for Boxer Puppies.
Boxers have a wonderful selection of both cards and stamps from around the world.

We have broken them into four pages:
Boxer (uncropped) Stamps from Around the World
Boxer Puppy Stamps from Around the World
Boxer Tobacco and Tea Cards from Around the World

Boxer stamp from Afghanistan

This stamp was put out in 2000.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Boxer stamp from Argentina

This stamp came from a set of 6 that had exquisite drawings issued in 1999 by Argentina. The illustrations are by artist Gustavo Deveze.
Argentina, Country in South America, occupying most of the southern half of the continent east of the Andes Mountains. It is the second largest country in South America after Brazil. It's capitol and largest city is Buenos Aires. Argentine consists of diverse terrain, stretching from the tropics in the north to the subpolar region in the south. In the middle of the country are the Pampas, vast fertile prairies that produce much of the country's agricultural wealth. Since the late 19th century, Argentina has exported large amounts of agricultural goods, including meat, wool and wheat. The country also has an extensive industrial sector. Argentia has had a volatile political history. Its most famous president Juan D. Peron was very popular with the working and lower classes and concentrated on developing the country's industrial sector during the 1940s and 1950s. However he polarized Argetnine Societ and was ousted by the military in 1955. The military controlled the Argentine Government at different times throut the nations history. The military stepped down in 1983. Argentina recommited itself to a democratic government at this time.

Boxer stamp from Benin Boxer stamp from Benin

These two Boxer protraits from Benin start our page of "Cropped" Boxers. It may be noted that Benin, former Dahomey, has perhaps the "most beaten tracks by Europeans of any in Africa". The history of Benin is a succession of kingdoms, followed by years of communist rule and finally independence in 1990.
The stamp on the left was issued in 1997 and the one on the right in 1995 from the Republic of Benin. Both sets were rather attractive, but also somewhat expensive.

Boxer stamp from Bulgaria

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Cropped Boxer shown above is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Bapoha. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed.

Boxer stamp from Bulgaria

I believe that this stamp from Bulgaria was issued in 1985, so it is one of our older Boxer stamps. It came in a set of six breeds and is relatively easy to find.
The Bulgars, A Central Asian Turkic Tribe, merged with the local slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Bulgaria regained its independence in 1878, but having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, it fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990. The country is slightly larger than Tennessee. The capital is Sofia.

Boxer stamp from Cambodia Boxer stamp from Cambodia

These two stamps were both issued by Cambodia, but the one on the left was done in 1998 and the one on the right in 1996. I don't have any information on either the artist or the subject, but they are both very nicely done.
Cambodia is located in southeastern Asia, bordering the Gulf of Thailand, between Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. It is slightly smaller than Oklahoma. The climate is tropical, rainy, monsoon season (May to November); dry season (December to April; little seasonal temperature variation. The terrain is mostly low, flat plains; mountains in southwest and north. The natural hazards are the monsoonal rains; flooding; occasional droughts. The current issues are illegal logging activities throughout the contry and strip mining for gems in the western region along the border with Thailand. Ethnic groups nsist of Khmer 90%, Vietnamese 5%, Chinese 1%, and others 4%. The languages are the official Khmer 95%, French and English. The government consists of multiparty democracy under a constitutional monarchy established on September 1993. The capital is Phnom Penh.

Boxer stamps from Congo

A lovely stamp of the Boxer issued by the Republic of Congo.
The Congo is situated in west central Africa astride the equator. Its area is nearly three times that of Pennsylvania. Most of the inland is tropical rain. It is a dictatorship. After the Portuguese located the Congo River in 1482, commerce was carried on with the tribes, especially the slave trade. During World War II the colony joined Chad in supporting the Free French cause against the Vichy government. The Congo proclaimed its independence without leaving the French Community in 1960, calling itself the Republic of Congo.

Boxer stamps from Dagestan

This lovely stamp from Dagestan was issued in 2001.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Boxer stamp from Gambia

The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained its Independence on February 18, 1965.
This is the other brindle Boxer that I have found. (See Nicaragua below for the first Brindle) It is part of a most unusual set of stamps showing dogs owned by nobility. It is called the Royal Dogs and this Boxer was owned by King Francis the First of France. The stamp was issued in 1993.

Boxer stamp from Germany

This stamp was issued in 1976 by West Germany. The postmark is called a CTO, which means Cancel to Order, on the day of issue. This one was postmarked in 'Berlin'.
Germany is located in Central Europe, bordering the Baltic Sea and the North Sea, between the Netherlands and Poland, south of Denmark. It is slightly smaller than Montana. The climate is temperate and marine; cool, cloudy, wet winters and summers. The terrain consists of lowlands in north, uplands in center, Bavarian Alps in south. It has natural hazards of flooding. Some current issues: emissions from coal-burning utilities and industries contribute to air pollution; acid rain, resulting from sulfur dioxide emissions, is damaging forests; pollution in the Baltic Sea form raw sewage and industrial effluents from rivers in eastern Germany. The religions: Protestant 34%. Roman Catholic 34%, Muslim 3.7% other 28.3%. The language is German. The capital is Berlin.

Guyana is a little country, which lies on the North Eastern shoulder of South America near the equator. Said to be the legendary El Dorado, Guyana is the only English-speaking country located in South America. Boxer stamp from Mozambique

This is a new small stamp from Mozambique. The drawings are intricate and fine. The name of the artist is not known.
Mozambique is 111 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

Boxer stamps from Nicaragua

Nicaragua is a Central American country that has had a turbulent recent history. In the 1980s, the country was racked by a civil war between the leftist Sandinista government and US-backed Contra rebels. Unemployment soared and annual hyperinflation reached 24,000%. Today, President Arnoldo Aleman, a right-wing businessman, is struggling to rebuild a country once defined by the Cold War conflict. To some extent, he’s succeeded. Although most Nicaraguans remain mired in poverty, economic growth has averaged nearly 5% a year under Aleman.
Nicaragua put out a set of breeds that depicted each one in both a standing and headstudy image. This is a nicely done stamp, made more important because it is one of only two stamps that show a brindle marked Boxer. Issued in 1982, it is more and more difficult to get.

Boxer stamps from Paraguay

This Boxer stamp was issued by Paraguay, in 1975. The stamp is actually printed in Portugal, but that is not uncommon. I wish that I had more information on this attractive stamp and a better source. It is often hard to get.
In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.
Paragury is located in Central South America, northeast of Argentina. It is slightly smaller than California. It has a subtropical to temperate climate. The capital is Asuncion. A large percentage of the population derives their living from agricultutal activity, often on a subsistence basis. It is landlocked; lies between Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil; the population is concentrated in southern part of the country.

Boxer stamps from Poland

This is one of the earlier representatives of dog stamps, put out by Poland in 1969. It is listed as a Bokser. The artwork is done by J. Grabianski and is a classic, even if somewhat old fashioned.
Poland is located in Central Europe, east of Germany and is slightly smaller than New Mexico. Climate is temperate with cold, windy, cloudy, moderately severe winters with frequent precipitation; mild summers with frequent showers and thunderstorms. The terrain is mostly flat plain; mountains along the southern border; Natural resources consist of coal, sulphur, copper, natural gas, silver, lead, salt, and arable land. Natural hazard of the area is flooding. The situation has improved since 1989 due to decline in heavy industry and increased environmental concern by postcommunist governments. Historically, an area of conflict because of flat terrain and the lack of natural barriers on the North European Plain.

Boxer stamp from Tadjikistan

This stamp was issued in 1999.
Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool, autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the desolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including these lovely Boxers from 1998.

Boxer stamps from Benin

Present day Benin was the site of Dahomey, a prominant West African kingdom that rose in the 15th century. The territory became a French Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military Governments ended in 1972 with the rise to powere of Mathieu KEREKOU and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. A move to representative government began in 1989. Two years later, free elections ushered in former Prime Minister Nicephor SOGLO as presdent, marking the first successful transfer of power in Africa from a dictatorship to a democracy. KEREKOU was returned to power by elections held in 1996 and 2001, though some irregularities were alleged.
The climate is tropical, hot, humid in south; semiarid in north; mostly flat terrain with some hills and low mountains; they have some envronmental issues such as inadequate supplies of potable water, and poaching of wildlife. The official capital is Porto-Novo; Cotonou is the seat of government.

Boxer stamps from Grenada

Grenada just issued this mini-sheet this year. The background is Boxer stamps from Gambia lovely and depicts the true feeling of the island. The colors are subtle but dramatic. The picture at the right is a detail of the boxer in the upper right hand corner of the minisheet. It is an expensive sheet and must be sold as a complete set.
Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket.

Boxer stamps from Kalmykia

A souvenir sheet of 'ALL' Boxers issued by Kalmykia.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Sierra Leone was a British colony to which freed slaves returned in the late 1700's. After Independence in 1961, successive governments were dominated by a small political elite who exclusively profited from the lucrative trade in diamonds. Little of this national income trickled down to benefit the rest of the population. After much fighting and insurrection the UN was finally convinced to send a peacekeeping force that was in the news for many months.

Boxer stamp from Turkmenistan

Boxer stamp from Turkmenistan Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.

This is probably one of the most amazing mini sheets ever produced. There are seven breeds represented and they have managed to run a perforation line through every one. My, what an accomplishment. The Boxer is shown enlarged to the right.
