Border Collie Stamps

Border Collie stamp from Australia

Australia seems like a nice place to start our tour of the Border Collie stamps. This set was issued in 1980 and contained, in addition to this lovely Border Collie, the Australian Kelpie, the Australian Cattle Dog, the Australian Terrier and the Dingo. These are not rare and for years, were our stand-by for Border Collies, since it was about the only stamp produced for the breed.

Border Collie stamp from Afghanistan

This gorgeous stamp is from Afghanistan and was issued in 1999. Each of the six stamps that came with the original set was lovely, including the Bearded Collie, Welsh Corgi and Old English Sheepdog. All of the breeds are originally from England. This stamp should remain available, but it is from an expensive set.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Border Collie stamp from Antigua Border Collie stamp from Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda are a pair of islands in the Caribbean that became a nation when Great Britain "gave them their freedom." The two islands are not at ease with each other since Barbuda contains 40% of the land but only 10% of the people and they prefer to not be developed by outsiders. Anyway, in 1994, the country issued two sets of stamps for the Year of the Dog. One set was of small dogs and one set for large dogs. This playful Border Collie is from that set.
The other Antiguan issue is a nifty treat for Border Collie fans. In 1998, Antigua and Barbuda issued a Christmas set with seven different breeds. The Border Collies were lucky enough to be one of them. They are hard to find, but not expensive.

Border Collie stamp from Cabo Verde.

Cape Verde is a set of islands that lie due west of the edge of Africa. The native language is Portuguese and it is locally called Cabo Verde.
Their only dog set was issued in 1995. It is not surprising to find a fabulous working dog on their stamps, since sheep are an important part of the island culture.

Border Collie stamps from Eritrea

In 1984, Eritrea issued a local set of stamps with a most unusual mix of Bulldog, Bloodhound, Lurcher, Setter, Chichuahua, Labrador and Bullmastiff. This Border Collie is one of the nicer "old fashioned" Borders available. Eritrea is a country on the Red Sea between the Sudan and Ethiopia in north eastern Africa. This set is not well known.

Border Collie stamps from Faulkland Islands

Interestingly Border Collie stamps from Faulkland Islands enough, the Faulkland Islands has issued two sets of stamps with Border Collies in them, probably because the island welfare is based on its sheep raising and Border Collies can't be beat for being an efficient shepherd's companion. This first one comes as part of a set that also has a horse, sheep and cattle stamps. It is sold as a complete set since I have no use for the other stamps in the group. To the right is a poor scan of a beautifully done mounting of the entire set, to show how nicely it can be presented. This one was backed by a gold leafed stamp and mounted in a solid brass oval frame.

Border Collie stamps from Grenada

Grenada is described as a spice island, since it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, specially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada is the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.
This set of 12 breeds was actually supposed to be for the Year of the Dog, I believe, which was 1994, but was ultimately issued in 1995.

Border Collie stamp from Jewish Republic

This set of impressive dog stamps was just issued in 1999 by the Jewish Republic, a local Russian state near Siberia. The economy of the former Soviet Union is in so much termoil that the local Russian states are desperately trying to generate revenue and one way to do that is by issueing attractive stamps that will be collected by fanciers rather than used to mail letters. Whatever the reason, this wonderful stamp is offered to represent our Border Collies.

Border Collie stamp from Micronesia

In 1525 Portuguese navigators in search of the Spice Islands (Indonesia) came upon Yap and Ulithi, now in Micronesia. Spanish expeditions later made the first European contact with the rest of the Caroline Islands. Spain claimed sovereignty over the Caroline Islands until 1899. At that time, Spain withdrew from its Pacific insular areas and sold its interests to Germany, except for Guam which became a US insular area. Japan took over during World War II and by the War's conclusion most infrastructure had been laid waste by bombing, and the islands and people had been exploited by the Japanese Military to the point of impoverishment. After the war, the United Nations set up a trust that was administered by the US. On July 12, 1978 the people voted in a referendum to form a Federation under the Constitution of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Border Collie stamps from New Zealand

This is the most common of the Border Collie stamps, issued in New Zealand in 1982. The other two breeds in the set are a Cocker Spaniel and a Labrador Retriever.
The British colony of New Zealand became an independent dominion in 1907 and supported the UK militarily in both World Wars. About 80% of the population lives in cities; Wellington is the southernmost national capital in the world. The seat of government in New Zealand was moved from Auckland to Wellington in 1865, largely on the basis of Wellington's central geographical position.
Auckland is New Zealand's largest urban area with population of just under a million people. It is NOT the capital, although it was at one time, until the capital moved to Wellington. Auckland has more boats per capita than anywhere else in the world, and is the current residence of the America's Cup. It is a water lover's paradise, with some of the best beaches, swimming, diving, fishing, sailing, windsurfing and watersports in the country. New Zealand consists of the North Island (Auckland is located here), and South Island.

Border Collie stamps from St. Thomas Border Collie stamps from St. Thomas

In 1995, S. Tome E. Principe issued a set of dogs playing with kittens. It is hard to see in this scan, but there are kittens playing on the rake that the dog is watching.
The lovely stamp on the right was also issued by S.Tome Principe in 1995. It is surprisingly hard to come by since the set is not well known.
Sao Tome E Principe was discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the 19th century - all grown with plantation slave labor, a form of which lingered into the 20th century. Although independence was achieved in 1975, democratic reforms were not instituted until the late 1980s. Though the first free elections were held in 1991, the political environment has been one of continued instability with frequent changes in leadership and coup attempts in 1995 and 2003. The recent discovery of oil in the Gulf of Guinea is likely to have a significant impact on the country's economy. Located in Western Africa, islands in the Gulf of Guinea, straddling the Equator, west of Gabon. It is more than 5 times the size of Wahington, D.C. The climate is tropical; hot humid; one rainy season (October to May).

Border Collie stamps from Udmurtia

Udmurtia is another of the local Russian states that has recently issued some nice dog stamps. This one was just released in 1999 and I would be surprised if it starts to show up for some time in the future, since this is a not an area that is easy to acquire.
What a lovely stamp by Udmurtia in 2001. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Border Collie.

The territory became a French Border Collie stamps from Benin Colony in 1872 and achieved independence on Autust 1, 1960, as the Republic of Benin. A succession of military Governments ended in 1972 with the rise to powere of Mathieu KEREKOU and the establishment of a government based on Marxist-Leninist principles. A move to representative government began in 1989. Two years later, free elections ushered in former Prime Minister Nicephor SOGLO as presdent, marking the first successful transfer of power in Africa from a dictatorship to a democracy. Border Collie stamp from Dagestan

Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Border Collie stamp from Gambia These Gambia babies can't be beat. What a wonderful portrait of a deserving breed. The Gambia is a long and narrow country in West Africa that parallels and takes in both sides of the Gambia River. It is surrounded by Senegal on all sides, except on the Atlantic coast, and for this reason the two countries have a lot of ethnic and cultural ties. In contrast to Senegal, a former French colony, The Gambia was colonized by Britain and gained it's Independence on February 18, 1965. Border Collie Card

Border Collie card from England

This is actually a card of the Welsh Collie, which is quite possibly a forerunner of today's Border Collie. These cards were intended to be issued by John Player & Sons in about 1940, but a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this. Luckily a number of the cards were printed and made available to collectors. The cards were intended to be inserted singly into packets of 10 cigarettes. The title of the set is: "Dogs' Heads: A series of 50 from Paintings by Peter Biegel" On the back it says, "Welsh Collie. Since the days of Howell the Good in the 10th century, herd dogs have been maintained for the control of sheep in the Welsh mountains and valleys. The Welsh Collie is largely a descendant of those old herd dogs, but there is quite a deal of Working collie blood in it today. Its inherent skill with sheep and cattle has made it a valuable general farm dog, and the railway authorities employ it to keep their lines clear of straying livestock. The Welsh Collie is extremely hardy, fast and intelligent, and with training is an outstanding performer at Sheepdog Trials."

*Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
