Bloodhound stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. This stamp was put out in 1999.

Bloodhound stamp from Afghanistan

This is a stamp from Afghanistan, issued in 1998. The entire set is outstandingly presented and the Bloodhound is one of the nicer of those. The set also includes a Borzoi, a Chow Chow, a Landseer, a Rottweiler and a Basset Hound.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Bloodhound stamp from Buriattia Bloodhound stamp from Chuvashia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Bloodhound shown above on the right is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Chuvashia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Bloodhound image from the overprint, put out by Buriatia.
When the over inflation started, millions of stamps had been printed that became essentially worthless. To keep from destroying them and taking the loss, it was decided to overprint them with topical themes and sell them as for the newly printed value. I doubt that these will remain available for very long.

Bloodhound stamp from Czechoslavakia

This is certainly an oddball stamp with the unique combination of a Bloodhound, an oversized Dachshund, and a Chesky Terrier that might be mistaken for a long backed Scottie. This is also important if for no other reason than it is one of the four that make up the lovely collection of Bloodhound stamps.
The Czech Republic is a landlocked republic in Central Europe, comprosing the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia and Silesia. The new state a democratic republic known as Czechoslovakia was broken up during World War II, but was re-established at the end of the war in 1945. From 1948 to 1989 the republic was ruled by a communist regime. In November 1989 the Communist government was ousted and Czechoslovakia again became a democratic state. During the 1990s, political and economic conflicts developed between the Czechs and Slovaks, and leaders of both groups decided to dissolve the Republic. In January 1993 Czechoslovakia was replaced by two independent states, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic has relatively few natural resources and is heavily dependent on imported energy and raw materials. It has a humid, continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. Prague is the Capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. The official language is Czech, a language of the West Slavic subgroup of slavic languages. The principle religion is Christianity. About 40% Roman Catholic. Protestant 3% and about 5% are atheist. Prior to World War II the country had a large Jewish population. Most of the Jews died in the Holocaust, the Nazi campaign to exterminate the Jews of Europe. Pork is a staple in their diet which resembles that of Germany. Traditionally the Czech lands have been among the most economically developed regions of Europe.

Bloodhound stamp from Dagestan

The break-up of the old Soviet Union is creating a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. In an effort to generate hard currency without having to offer the associated services, the local governments are putting out stamps that will be bought by collectors around the world, and not used to mail letters. This stamp from Dagestan (a southern local Russian state) is one of these stamps. It was issued in 1997, but not widely distributed.

Bloodhound stamp from Gagauzia

This is a second great stamp from a local area of the old Soviet Union. It is listed from Gagauzia, which is also Moldova, an area in Romania.
Gagauzia is one of those local Russian governments that has issued topical stamps in the hopes of raising currency without offering the associated services. The idea is to have people buy the stamps as collectables rather than actually mail letters with them. This one is particularly nice and should be available for some time.

Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This unique stamp was issued by the Sakhalin Islands. This set also contained such unique breeds as Komondor, Old English Sheepdog, Akita and St Bernard. Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. Bloodhound stamp from St. Vincent

This lovely headstudy is from the island of St. Vincent. This one was done for the "Leaders of the World" Series to honor the artist Gyula L. Vasarhelyi.
Caribs were the first inhabitants of St. Vincent. Columbus marked the presence of the island on his third voyage in 1498, but didn't go ashore. The Caribs were tenacious, keeping the European conquistadors at bay longer than on any other island.
In 1787, Captain William Bligh set sail from England on the Bounty, bound for Tahiti. The purpose of the voyage, which ended in mutiny, was to collect breadfruit plants and transport them to St. Vincent for use as food for slaves. In 1793 Bligh eventually arrived in St. Vincent on another ship loaded with breadfruit seedlings. The fruit would make the island famous. To this day, bananas are the main export from the island.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines achieved independence in 1979. The islands have produced many stamps over the years, including this Bloodhound from 1985. They are reasonably available.

What a lovely pair (on either stamp). These were issued in 2000.

Bloodhound stamp from Udmurtia

Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Bloodhound. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Bloodhound stamp from Guinea
Bloodhound stamp from Guinea
Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Bloodhound stamp from Nevis

Nevis issued a set of stamps showing hunting dogs, all setters and retrievers. Surprisingly, the souvenir sheets that were issued with it were for the Bloodhound and the German Shepherd. I am not sure why, but we won't argue when the souvenir sheet is this nice. It was issued in 1995 but still not easy to get.
St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

Bloodhound stamp from Mozambique

You can't beat this wonderful souvenir sheet/mini sheet from Mozambique issued in 2000. The original is 8 1/2 inches tall by 6 inches wide. It is labeled as Dogs of the World. There are so many things going on in this picture, Bloodhound stamp from Mozambique it is like a kid's game book. Check out the Irish Water Spaniel retrieving a stick in the river and the two Bull Terriers playing on the bottom left. The picture on the left is a detail of the Bloodhound located on the left in the mini sheet above. Mozambique is 106 years old. The country came into existence in its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing, but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates that became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development.
