not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post
Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with
a new image and a new value. The Bloodhound shown above on the right
is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Chuvashia. These stamps come in a
set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in
some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never
saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There
is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never
designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until
the actual stamps can be printed. On the left is the stamp that was ultimately issued
with the Bloodhound image from the overprint, put out by Buriatia.

it is like a kid's game book. Check out the Irish Water Spaniel retrieving a stick
in the river and the two Bull Terriers playing on the bottom left.
There is a second beautiful sheet put out by Mozambique with such breeds as the
Saluki, Jack Russell Terrier and Australian Shepherd.
The picture on the left is a detail of the Bloodhound located on the left in the mini sheet above.
Mozambique is 106 years old. The country came into existence in
its present form as a result of an Anglo-Portuguese treaty of
May 1891 and gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. The
Mozambique created in 1891 was not a piece of random map drawing,
but an attempt to make sense of the history of the region in a
single colonial state. In doing so, it accepted a part of the
African coast, which was established in the sixteenth century
when the Portuguese divided their command in eastern Africa
between the states of Mozambique and Mombassa.

You're thinking I'm crazy -- these aren't Bloodhound stamps, right? Hehe, you didn't
look closely enough. The Bloodhound headstudy is the background image. I tried
to add more contrast to the detail to the left to bring it out better. If you
still have a problem seeing it, try squinting your eyes. I realize that these are
not your main Bloodhound stamps, but you can't have a complete set without them!
The same background is printed behind a Whippet, a Vizsla and a Wire Fox Terrier
set of images.

exclusively profited from
the lucrative trade in diamonds, dominated successive governments. Little of
this national income trickled down to benefit
the rest of the population. After much
fighting and insurrection the UN was finally
convinced to send a peacekeeping force that
was in the news for many months.

Tatarstan is one of the former Russian states along the Volga River. It has been
independent since 1994, but even a thousand years ago, it was known as Islam's
Northern Mecca. This beautiful souvenir sheet was just issued in
2001. The awesome puppy shown on the right is a detail of the
sheet above.
