The left card above was intended to be issued by John Player & Sons about 1940, but a paper shortage due to the outbreak of World War II prevented this. Fortunately, a number of the cards were printed and made available to collectors. The cards were intended to be inserted singly into packets of 10 cigarettes. The title of the set is: "Dogs' heads: A series of 50 from Paintings by Peter Biegel". On the back it says, "Bloodhound. A descendant of the French St. Hubert hounds, the Bloodhound was introduced to England by the Norman invaders. It is a heavily-built dog, yet is has a docile temperament. Though used originally to hunt deer, its remarkable sense of smell led to its use for manhunting. Many criminals have been brought to justice by its ability to follow the faintest of scents; one American Bloodhound, "Nick Carter", assisted in the capture of about 600 wanted men. It is not a common breed, and at one period was in danger of extinction. It is black and tan, red and tan, or tawny in colour."

The card on the right was issued by Amaran Tea in 1965. One of these cards was enclosed in cartons of Amaran Tea. On the back it says, "Bloodhound. The Bloodhound has long been used for tracking men. The skull should be long and narrow with a very pronounced optical peak. The eyes are deeply sunk in the orbits and vary in colour from deep hazel to yellow. The ears are very soft and fall in long graceful folds. Colour of the coat is either black and tan, red and tan or tawny."

The head of the dog is large with a prominent peak and ample wrinkle. Weight is about 100 lbs."

The card on the right was issued by Priory Tea in 1957. The series is called "I-Spy Dogs" and on the back is a place to note when you have "spied" an actual specimen. It says, "Famous for his sense of smell, I-Spy his wrinkled forehead and his sad expression."

These cards of children and their dogs were issued by Carreras Ltd. in 1936. The cards were inserted singly into packets of 10 cigarettes. The title of the set is "Dogs and Friend", a Series of 50 described by Lady Kitty Ritson. On the back it says, "The Bloodhound. The Bloodhound in this picture is thirteen months old, and has won two first prizes, four second, and a Reserve Challenge Certificate. The breed is very old but rather delicate. Although the Bloodhound has been used for tracking criminals both here and in America, it has a very gentle disposition. A few years ago Mrs. Sadleir's two Bloodhounds helped the police to the extent of tracking down the "Sussex gunman" who was wanted for murder. Their heads are extraordinarily beautiful, and are certainly very noble to look upon."

These beautiful paintings are by artist Arthur Wardle from a series titled "Dogs Heads (Eire)-Reprint of 1940" and were issued in 1994. Players and Sons put these cards singly into their packages of cigarettes. The following is printed on the back of the card: "This breed owes its creation to St. Hubert Hounds brought from France by the Norman invaders. Dogs of the Bloodhound type are of great antiquity and are not mentioned in early histories. Gifted with an extraordinarily keen nose, the Bloodhound was originally used as a tracker of game, and later its uses were extended to the trailing of criminals. In the U.S.A. the breed was largely employed at one time in the tracking of escaped slaves. Although so keen a hunter, the Bloodhound is not a fierce animal and does not attack his quarry when the trail is finished".

Bloodhound card from England

This is not a card but a lovely painting on a paper back. It is from a series titled "Our Friend--The dog",'Educational Pictures'.
"One of the oldest of canine strains, Bloodhounds were bred for hunting thousands of years ago. Their name, "Bloodhound," creates the impression that they are ferocious, and that when used for trailing a human fugitive they would tear their wretched quarry to shreds if they catch him. This idea has been fostered by lurid tales of escaping slaves pursued by Bloodhounds in the old South "befoh de Wah." The truth is that bloodhounds will not attack the man they are trailing. When they reach him they show no further interest. Actually, they are gentle, affectionate and docile. Their name comes from "blooded hound," a term applied to these dogs in the Middle Ages when hunting packs of Bloodhounds were extensively and carefully bred."

The breed is descended from the hounds of St. Hubert of the middle East and eventually found their way to England about the 10th century. A remarkable animal for his extraordinary scenting powers. He has been known to follow a cold trail over 100 hours old. Used by the Police for tracking down criminals, one dog alone has been credited with 600 convictions".

This lovely card was issued by Gallaher in 1938. On the back it says, "Bloodhound. The Bloodhound's miraculous powers of scent are known to everyone, and his reputation is as awe-inspiring as his gloomy appearance. Not many of them are kept as house-dogs, but some of the people who do keep them say they are equally morose by nature. In two respects they exhibit surprising wolf characteristics -- their natural tendency to hunt in packs and their manner of giving tongue when on the scent, a normal bark being unknown to them."

This lovely picture is a "swap card" from the Golden Fleece Australia set titled "Pedigree Dogs" issued in 1972. The following is printed on the back of the card: "The Bloodhound is a very old breed and has the best nose for tracking. Because of his outstanding scenting ability the Bloodhound is used as a police dog to trail lost persons and criminals. Many lives have been saved and criminals caught as the result of the Bloodhound's keen sense of smell. Some of the longest man trails followed by a Bloodhound on record have been distances of 135 miles and over 100 hours old.
He is not an unfriendly animal even though his name might suggest otherwise."

Quaker Oats "Challenge of the Yukon" cards were issued in 1938. The following is printed on the back of the card with a 'stamped' signature of Sergeant Preston at the end. "Bloodhound is easy to recognize with his distinctive and sad, sunken eyes. He is not mean or vicious. His sense of smell is unequalled. His keen nose follows the coldest of trails. For centuries, he has served man by tracking escaped prisoners after the tracks are days old. He never attacks his prey, but waits until the posse arrives on the scene. Name of Bloodhound shown here is 'Snoopy'".

This lovely 'duo' is a card issued in a series of 25 cards, from paintings by artist Arthur Wardle. John Player & Sons enclosed these cards in their large packages of cigarettes in 1940. Due to the paper shortage during the World War II years not many were actually issued. I have only one of the original prints in pristine condition. Printed on the back of the card: "The introduction of the Bloodhound into England is usually credited to Norman invaders who had utilized this hound's wonderful sense of smell for the tracking of game. Nothing definite of the breed's orogin can be traced beyond the fact that a breed of hunting dogs had been bred at the monastery of St. Huber in the Ardennes from about the seventh century. The extremely keen nose of the breed led to its being used as a tracker of criminals, such as sheep-stealers, paochers and robbers, and even to-day the police occasionally make use of the Bloodhound when searching for wrong-doers and excaped convicts. Few breeds other than Blookhounds have attained show ring popularity without losing some of their working ability, but it is fairly safe to presume that nearly all the show dogs of this breed to-day can follow a scent several hours cold."

This series of 24 cards was issued by Gallaher in 1934. The Bloodhound card from England set was titled simply "Dogs" and the Bloodhound was the number 20 card. The cards were enclosed singly in Gallaher's DELUXE Cigarettes. The printing on the back of the card is as follows: "It may be said that the Bloodhound is a distinct type of dog to which all the hounds are related. In early Scottish history, in the middle of the 16th century, these dogs were referred to as sleuth-hounds, having marvelous wit and being able to discover the whereabouts of miscreants long after they had fled. Even to-day they are used by the police of various countries for a similar purpose. The dog illustrated is an excellent specimen of the breed, and has won consistently in the show-ring all over the country. He is owned by Mrs. N.E. Elms."

The original set of this card was issued by W.D. & H.O. Wills in 1914. This reprint is an officially authorized reproduction produced by Victoria Gallery in 1987. On the back, it says, "Although the Bloodhound has lost much of his former utility, his noble proportions and magnificent head render him still a great favourite as a pet. In former times the Bloodhound, or Sleuth-hound, was largely used for the tracking of wounded game and for the pursuit of escaped malefactors. His loud, sonorous "voice," terrible appearance, huge size, and keen scent rendered him a most formidable opponent. Whilst he is ferocious when on the track of his quarry, ordinarily he is extremely affectionate and not at all quarrelsome, somewhat shy, and very sensitive to kindness or correction. The favourite colours are black-and-tan, red-and-tan, and tawny, and he should be 25 or 27 inches high, and weigh between 80 and 100 lbs.
