Belgian Tervuren Stamps
I must admit that I was surprised at the wonderful variety of Belgian Tervuren stamps that have become available. In the beginning, I combined the three varieties together, but they soon outgrew just one page. Be sure to check out the other Belgian stamps at:

Belgian Tervuren stamp from Ashamyana

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Belgian Sheepdog shown above is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Ashamyana. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed.

Sakhalin is a very long but narrow island located between Japan and Russian Maritime Territory. It is separated from the continent by a narrow strait of 6 km width and for that reason, Westerners first thought it should be a peninsula. With the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin is one of the territories disputed between Japan and Russia and its belonging has not yet been definitely settled. In 1997, the local government started issuing stamps. In 1998 they issued this Russian Overprint. Later, Bashkorkostan issued the color stamp that the overprint image had come from. To the right is a sample of what the five different colors look like.

Belgian Sheepdog stamps from Dagestan

Dagestan is another Russian state. Puppies breeds are always hard to tell apart, even while they are all cute, but the country lists this as a Belgian, and I have no doubt that it is a baby Tervuren. I hope that this one will remain easy to get as well.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Belgian Tervuren stamp from Evenkia

Evenkia is in the far northern region of central Russia. The native people were nomads who depend on hunting and reindeer for their livelihood for centuries. The Soviet government tried to bring these people under their rule but the climatic conditions are very harsh and it was difficult to exploit the natural resources, so much of the country was still undominated when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. This is from the first set of dog stamps issued by the remote region of Evenkia, put out in 1999.

Belgian Tervuren stamp from Karakalpakia

Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally-induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Belgian Turveren stamp from Komi

The breakup of the Soviet Union has been a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps as the local governments try to draw currency from selling more stamps than would be used to mail letters. Komi is just such a local state and this Belgian Turveren stamp is a lovely example of how we all win. I am unable to find a date of issue. This should remain available for some time.
The Komi Republic is situated in the extreme North-East part of Russia. It is a multinational state, since the population of Komi Republic is estimated at 1.2 million citizen and consists of 100 nationalities. The Komi Republic is now a democratic legal state included into the Russian Federation. The republic has unique stocks of mineral resources thanks to their location, diversity and quality.

Together with Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan forms a region known as Central Asia. The area of Kyrgyzstan is almost completely mountainous and is subject to major earthquakes. It declared its independence with the downfall of the Soviet Empire in 1991.
These two stamps, though quite different, are equally impressive. The puppy is absolutely darling and the adult on the plains is noble and elegant.

Belgian Tervuren stamp from
Mongolia

Most resources list this as a German Shepherd, but that is probably because they are not familiar with Belgian Tervurens. This Mongolian stamp was issued in 1978.
Mongolia is located in Northern Asia, between China and Russia. It is slightly smaller than Alaska. The climate is desert, large daily and seasonal temperature ranges. The Gobi Desert is located in the south-central region. Mongolia has dust storms, grassland and forest fires, drought, and "zud" which is harsh winter conditions. The people have limited natural fresh water resources in some areas. The capital is Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia achieved its independence from China July 11, 1921. The unemployment rate is 20%. Mongolia is totally landlocked, therefore economic activity traditionally has been based on agriculture and breeding of livestock.

San Marino is a republic in southern Europe, an enclave in northern Italy, east of Florence. San Marino is one of the smallest republics in the world. This stamp was issued in 1994. It says that it is for the International Dog Exposition, but that was also the Year of the Dog, so it might have had a dual purpose.

Belgian Tervueren stamp from Tanzania

Even though Tanzania is in Africa, they issued this Belgian stamp in 1996. He is listed as a Belgian Shepherd Dog. Generally available.
Tanzania, the largest country in East Africa, is renowned for its magnificent wildlife, lakes, mountains, and scenery. The country boasts a wealth of natural attractions, including the famed Ngorongoro crater and the formidable Mount Kilimanjaro. It is also home to magnificent game reserves: Gombe Stream National Park, with its chimpanzee sanctuary; and the breathtaking plains of the Serengeti National Park, which hosts the annual migration of at least two million wildebeest with leopards and lions hot on their heels. Add to this the lovely beaches of the exotic islands of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia. Tanzania issued a couple of different sets of dog stamps, including this beguiling stamp in 1994.

Belgian Turveren stamp from Abkhazia

Abkhazia is a local Russian state that has also started to produce interesting stamps. This double stamp/souvenir sheet was put out in 1995, and was taken from a painting done by Mick Caswton. Mr. Cawston, an artist from Essex, rose rapidly from selling his work on a market stall to international fame when he was discovered by the Dog Art World. His originals now command to price and you can see why with this wonderful Belgian Tervuren portrait.

Belgian Turveren stamp from Kamchatka

Kamchatka, a peninsula comparable in size to Japan, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, as well as the Bering and Okhotskoe Seas, and contains the last stretches of Siberian taiga. Russia's large volcanic belt , made up of 28 active craters, stretches along its shore. Though the flora and fauna, as is characteristic of northern regions, is not marked by diversity, more than half of the world's Steller's Sea Eagles, as well as the largest population of brown bears, are found here. In the center of Kamchatka is found Eurasia's only Geyser Valley. More than 150 thermal springs are scattered throughout the peninsula. Kamchatka is very sparsely populated, averaging less than 1 person per square kilometer. Most of the inhabitants live in the regional capital, but a traditional way of life continues in the peninsula's many scattered villages. Despite its pristine appearance, however, Kamchatka struggles with pollution problems, much of it stemming from the large military presence on the Peninsula. This outstanding souvenir sheet was issued in 2001.

Belgian Turveren stamp from St Vincent

This minisheet is an interesting problem. This is grossly mislabeled. The dog on the bottom left is listed as a Bernese Mountain Dog rather than a Leonberger even though BMD's are all black and tan. The dog on the bottom right is listed as a German Shepherd, but it is fairly obvious that it is probably actually a sable Tervuren. It devinitely deserves to be in any complete collection.

* We can take visa/mc/disc or paypal, but they are first come first served, so let me know if you are interested.

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
