Bearded Collie Stamps

Bearded Collies are fortunate to have a number of lovely stamps honoring our breed. Enjoy the trip.

Bearded Collie stamp from Afghanistan

What a wonderful way to start the breed. This lovely stamp of a brown Bearded Collie was issued on April 21, 1999. The one shown above has the cancelation mark on it from the first day of issue, but most do not.
Afghanistan is a mountainous land-locked country located in Central Asia. It has a history and culture that goes back over 5000 years. Throughout its long, splendid, and sometimes chaotic history, this area of the world has been known by various names. In ancient times, its inhabitants called the land Aryana. In the medieval era, it was called Khorasan, and in modern times, its people have decided to call it Afghanistan. The exact population of Afghanistan is unknown, however, it is estimated to be somewhere around 21-26 million. It is slightly smaller than Texas. They have cold winters and hot summers. Some current issues are limited fresh water resources, inadequate supplies of potable water, overgrazing and deforestation. The capital is Kabul. The majority of the population continues to suffer from insufficient food, clothing, housing, and medical care, problems exacerbated by military operations and political uncertainties.

Bearded Collie stamp from Ajman

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself.

Bearded Collie stamp from Batum

Batum is a local Russian state just south of the Black Sea, that has issued a couple of sets of dog stamps. Their set of puppies is precious and we are pleased that they chose to include a Bearded Collie in it.

Bearded Collie stamp from Buriatia

Buriatia is in southern Siberia near Lake Baykal on the Mongolian border and such the Buryat people are Buddhists as well.
The collapse of the Soviet Union has created a gold mine for stamp collectors. The local governments have issued some wonderful stamps in an effort to sell them to the world market and not even have to provide the associated service of mailing letters with them. This is a real boon when you see such lovely examples as this stamp put out by Buriatia in 2001.

Bearded Collie stamp from Cape Verde

Cape Verde is a set of islands that lie due west of the edge of Africa. The native language is Portugese and it is locally called Cabo Verde. The left side of this stamp is a close relative of a Bearded Collie and the right side is part of a painting by Thomas Blinks called "Hounds at Full Cry". It was issued in 1995. Interestingly enough, the artist, Vasarhelyi contacted me about many of the stamps that he has designed. He does not own Beardies (he has Kuvasz in England) but really likes the breed.

Bearded Collie stamp from Dagestan

This wonderful stamp from Dagestan was put out in 2001.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical.

Bearded Collie stamp from Kalmykia

This wonderful stamp from Kalmykia was put out in 2000.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Bearded Collie stamp from Karakalpakia

This stamp was put out in 2001.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Bearded Collie stamp from Komi Bearded Collie stamp from Komi

The downfall of the former Russian Soviet Union has been a gold mine for collectors of topical stamps. The local governments have started to issue stamps that they want to sell to collectors who will buy them without expecting to use the postal system by mailing a letter. The stamp on the right from Komi (Komi is another Russian local state in the extreme north part of Russia) is just such a lucky event, and it was issued in 1996, then in 1998, they issued the smaller stamp on the left.

Bearded Collie stamp from Lesotho

Lesotho is a mountainous, landlocked country completely surrounded by South Africa. It is very poor, but has recently built a large dam to help it have power and sell water to its neighbor, the Republic of South Africa. I understand that it is the birthplace of Nelson Mandella. The only dog stamps that they had issued in the past were Disney characters, so it is a pleasure to see the wonderful job that they did with this new set.

Bearded Collie stamp from Sakhalin Islands Bearded Collie stamp from Sakhalin Islands

These next two stamps are also a Russian local issue from the Sakhalin Islands. These islands are over on the eastern edge of Russia near the Alaska border. The one on the right was issued in 1998. There is much argument on what breed this actually is, including the Lhasa Apso, Tibetian Terrier and Bearded Collie. I agree that it is a close call, but should be included in any complete collection.
The one on the left however, is definitely a Beardie and in fact, is the same photo that was used above in the small Komi stamp. It was issued in 2000 and I believe that the Komi will be phased out and this is the only one that will be available of this pose in the future.

Bearded Collie stamp
from Sharjah

Sharjah is the third largest of the seven states, which forms the United Arab Emirates which became fully independent in 1971. From that time, it has attracted attention -- first because of its oil reserves and its strategic location but now in addition to those, because of its program of economic and social development. In the last quarter of the twentieth century, the UAE has witnessed the creation of a truly modern welfare state. Education, health care and social services are available to all citizens. This darling puppy stamp was issued in 2000, the first time that Sharjah has issued dogs stamps since 1972.

Bearded Collie stamp from Turkmenistan Bearded Collie stamp from Turkmenistan

Annexed by Russia between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its independence upon the dissolution of the USSR in 1991. President NIYAZOV retains absolute control over the country and opposition is not tolerated. Extensive Hudrocarbon/natural gas reserves could prove a boon to this underdeveloped country if extraction and delivery projects were to be expanded. Turkmenistan is on the east side of the Caspian Sea, just above Iran. It is slightly larger than California in size. Its terrain is flat-to-rolling sandy desert with dunes rising to mountains in the south; low mountains along border with Iran; borders Caspian Sea in west. The religion is Muslim 89%, Eastern Orthodox 9%, unknown 2%. The capital is Ashgabsat.
Like the other new Russian issues, these are both recent, quite attractive and not expensive.

Bearded Collie stamp from Tuvalu

There was a time when this was the only Bearded Collie stamp that we had. It never crossed my mind that it would become unavailable, but that is the case, I have not found a consistent source for them in about five years. Tuvalu is an Island in the Southern Pacific and this stamp was issued in 1985 not so much in commemoration of the dog, but in honor of the artist, Gyula L. Vasarhelyi as one of the Leaders of the World. Notice that he also designed the stamp above from Cabo Verde.

Bearded Collie stamp from Udmurtia

What a lovely stamp by Udmurtia in 2000. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is considered a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool; autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Udmurtia became one of the local republics and as such they now issue stamps including this lovely Bearded Collie.

Bearded Collie stamp from Calve Island

Calve Island is off the coast of Scotland. There are a number of islands that seem to issue stamps just for their collector value. This stamp carries the Rotary International emblem and most of them that I have seen had a CTO overprint of the date of issue: March 10, 1984. These stamps can be used to send mail to the mainland, but cannot be used within Scotland, or to other countries. I have managed to find some mint issued ones without the cancellation mark.

from Guinea

Guinea is partial heir to the series of west African empires that, at their height before the arrival of the Europeans, Bearded Collie stamp
from Guinea cast significant political and commercial influence over many peoples from Guinea's Atlantic coast to the southern edge of the Sahara. The empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai spanned the period from about the 10th to the 15th centuries. French military penetration into the area began in the mid-19th century. Guinea became an independent republic in 1958.

Bearded Collie stamp
from Liberia
Bearded Collie stamp
from Liberia Liberia is an independent republic which lies on the on the bulge of Africa between Sierra Leone and the Ivory Coast. The official language of Liberia is English but several local languages are more widely spoken. In 1980 a military coup overthrew the government and led to economic mismanagement and debt. A democratically elected government was elected in 1997; however, the war had severely damaged the economy through the loss of facilities and foreign investment. This minisheet marks the first dog stamps issued by Liberia since the 1970's. The artistic Beardie is shown on the left.

Bearded Collie stamp from Touva

Touva (often spelled Tuva) is a country in the southern area of Siberia. It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the perma frost, and local fauna from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form. They issued a lovely set of dog stamps in 1999. This was issued both as a regular stamp, as seen above and as a souvenir sheet with drawings of dogs around the border on the left.

from Zambia

Bearded Collie stamp from Zambia The territory of Northern Rhodesia was administered by the South Africa Company from 1891 until takeover by the UK in 1923. During the 1920s and 1930s, advances in mining spurred development and immigration. The name was changed to Zambia upon independence in 1964. This beautiful minisheet issued in 2000, marks the first dog stamps issued by this country.

Bearded Collie stamp from Nevis

Bearded Collie stamp from Zambia St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

Bearded Collie Cards

Bearded Collie card from Great Britain.
This lovely card was issued by Gallaher, Ltd. in 1938. On the back it says, "Scotch Bearded Collie. Here is a venerable breed of Collie that has been worked with sheep in Scotland for generations. His great claim to distinction is the brilliant manner with which he carries off the prizes in field trials and intelligence tests, having a mind as quick on the uptake as can be found in any dog. The Bearded type shown here is less common, but no less charasteristic of the breed, which varies a good deal."

* Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
