Beagle stamp from Abkhazia

The economy in the former Soviet Union is in very sad shape. To bolster their income, the independent Russian states have started issuing topical stamps in the hope that the world market will buy them and not require the associated postal services. As of this date Abkhazia is a fragment of the old USSR, its either a part of Georgia or a new country, depending on who you ask. They started printing their own passports in Oct.. 1998, but it's unclear how universally they will be recognized. The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range, from the rivers Psou(in the North) and ingur (in the South). The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. This stamp was issued in 1999.

Ajman is the smallest of the United Arab Emirates. It is immediately to the north of and mostly surrounded by Sharjah. Like most of the country, Ajman is in the process of changes which amount to a transformation. The central area is rapidly being modernized and it is clear that Ajman has no intention of being left behind the other Emirates. It is here that the Victory speedboats are built and Ajman is determined to enjoy a share of the United Arab Emirates' victories for itself. This beautiful puppy stamp was issued in 1972.

Buriatia Beagle stamp from
Buriatia

The economy in Russia since the break up of the Soviet Union has such high inflation that stamps that were previously issued are not of enough value to mail a letter any more, so to remedy the situation, the local Post Offices have taken blocks of four "old" printed stamps and overprinted them with a new image and a new value. The Beagle shown above on the left is one of these "Russian Overprints" from Buriatia. These stamps come in a set of five different colored stamps all with the same overprint. Last time that I got in some overprints, I assumed that they would remain available. I was wrong and I never saw more copies of those. I expect these to be equally as rare and collectable. There is no telling how many of the overprints they produced (not many), since they were never designed to be sold on the world market. They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. On the right is the stamp that was ultimately issued with the Beagle image from the overprint, also put out by Buriatia. There is a second pair below from Dagestan.

They are of value only for a short while until the actual stamps can be printed. The stamp on the left was ultimately issued by Dagestan with the Beagle image from the overprint from Amurskaya.
Dagestan is one of the republics of the former USSR. Located between the Caspian Sea on the East and Caucasus mountains on the West, it is probably one of the most attractive places in that part of the globe. Its area is close to that of Scotland. With population of just above 2 million people, Dagestan is the homeland to over 36 different nationalities, and each one of those nationalities has its own unique language. Such combination of languages, cultures, types of landscape and customs makes it a one of a kind place in the world. These days, however, Dagestan is going through the times of heavy unrest, both political and ethnical. This stamp was issued in 1999.
Ingushetia is one of the 21 Russian republics, which are the administrative units with the greatest amount of autonomy within the Russian Federation. Beagle stamp from Dominica

This stamp was issued in 1994 as part of the commemoration for the Year of the Dog.
Dominica was the last of the Caribbean islands to be colonized by Europeans, due chiefly to the fierce resistance of the native Caribs. France ceded possession to Great Britain in 1763, which made the island a colony in 1805. In 1980, two years after independence, Dominca's fortunes improved when a corrupt and tyrannical administration was replaced by that of Mary Eugenia CHARLES, the first female prime minister in the caribbean, who remained in office for 15 years. It is slightly more than four times the size of Washington, DC. The climate is tropical and the terrain has rugged mountains of volcanic origin. It is known as "The Nature Island of the Caribbean" due to its spectacular, lush, and varied flora and fauna, which are protected by an extensive natural park system. The official language is English. The capital is Roseau.

Beagle stamp from Evenkia

Evenkia is in the far northern region of central Russia. The native people were nomads who depend on hunting and reindeer for their livelihood for centuries. The Soviet government tried to bring these people under their rule but the climatic conditions are very harsh and it was difficult to exploit the natural resources, so much of the country was still undominated when the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991. This is the first set of dog stamps issued by the remote region of Evenkia, put out in 1999.

Beagle stamp from Grenada

This stamp is from Grenada - Grenadines and was issued in 1993. Most of the stamps issued show a landmark from the country of origin. Therefore, I am mystified as to why this lovely Beagle stamp would show the ruins of the Temple to Athens Greece.
Grenada is described as a spice island, because it produces large quantities of cloves and mace and about a third of the world’s nutmeg. It also grows cacao, sugar, bananas and a wide variety of other fruit and vegetables. Some of its beaches, especially Grand Anse, a dazzling two-mile stretch of white sand, are very fine, but the rest of the island is just as beautiful, rising from a generally rugged coast to a spectacular mountainous interior. The island is green, well forested and cultivated and is blessed with plenty of rain in the wet season. Grenada iis the most southerly of the Windward Islands. In contrast to other Windward Islands which have had a similar history of disputed ownership between the French and English, the French cultural influence in Grenada has completely died out. The population is very young; 38% are under 15 years old and nearly 26% are in the 15-29 years’ age bracket. Grenada has two dependencies in the Grenadines chain, Carriacou and Petit (often spelt Petite) Martinique.

The Republic of Kabardino-Balkaria is a federal subject of the Russian Federation located in the northern Caucasus mountains, with plains in the northern part. The Kabardian lands have been under Russian protectorate since 1557. In 1739 Kabardia became independent and 1774 became part of the Russian empire. Balkaria was annexed in 1827. In 1944, Stalin accused the Balkars of collaborating with Nazi Germany and deported the entire population. The Territory was renamed the Kabardin ASSR until 1957, when the Balkar population was allowed to return and its name was restored.

Beagle stamp from Kalmykia

What a pair of beautiful Beagle Puppies issued by Kalmykia in 2001.
Kalmykia is a republic within the Russian Federation. The Kalmyks settled the Volga River region in the seventeenth century. A Mongol people, they were originally Buddhist in faith. Annexed to Russian in 1771, a Kalmyk Autonomous Province was created by the Bolsheviks in 1920. This was abolished during the Second World War, when, in common with many other ethnic minorities, the Kalmyks were deemed to have displayed insufficient enthusiasm for fighting for Communism. The customary mass deportations followed. An Autonomous Republic was re-established in 1958.

Beagle stamp from Karakalpakia

This Beagle puppy also was issued in 2001 by Karakalpakia.
Karakalpakia, now under the domain of Uzbekistan, is on the edge of the shrinking Aral Sea, which has recently revealed a shocking scale of environmentally induced disease. Women and children are most severely affected from the spread of pesticides and other pollutants as the lake - once the fourth largest in the world - has turned into a desert, its waters siphoned off to irrigate vast cotton fields and rice paddies in Central Asia. Over 20 per cent of the young women, aged 13-19, have kidney disease, and another 23 per cent suffer from thyroid dysfunctions. And many women have high levels of lead, zinc and strontium in their blood. Although the Aral Sea probably has less than 10 years of life left, if nothing is done to salvage what remains of it, the 1.1 million residents of Karakalpakia are under immediate health threats. If nothing is done to improve the health of the people we may be witnessing the end of another entire society as a result of human folly.

Beagle stamp from Karelia

Karelia is on the northwest corner of Russia, bordering Finland, to which it once belonged. This stamp was issued in 2000.
The Republic of Karelia is a remarkably beautiful land of white nights, boundless forests, and blue lakes. It is located on the border of Western and Eastern Europe, on the border of cultures and religions. Severe beauty of its nature, the climate, not too favourable in these latitudes, the coexistence and intermingling of various peoples inhabiting this land for centuries all that conditioned the character of the people living here: very laconic, self-assured, contemplative, and tolerant people. It also accounts for the fact that there is no national strife and terrorism in this land.

Beagle stamp from Montserrat

Montserrat (Island), dependency of the United Kingdom, with 39 square miles in area, is one of the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles, in the Caribbean Sea. Montserrat is located southwest of Antigua and northwest of Guadeloupe. A governor administers the dependency with the assistance of executive and legislative councils.
The island was first sighted by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and was named by him for a noted monastery on Montserrat, a mountain in Spain. Once known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, Montserrat may have to find a new nickname. After more than 350 years of quiet, most of the island is now covered with a dull gray sheet of ash after the devastating eruptions of the Soufriere Hills Volcano that took place beginning in late June, 1997. The volcanic eruptions devastated the island's economy and the British government sent financial aid and provided supplies to build housing for the remaining population of about 4,000.
In spite of all the problems, a beautiful stamp in black & white with a lovely background (as shown above) was issued in 2000.

St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Beagle stamp from Paraguay

In the disastrous War of the Triple Alliance (1865-70), Paraguay lost two-thirds of all adult males and much of its territory. It stagnated economically for the next half century. In the Chaco War of 1932-35, large economically important areas were won from Bolivia. The 35-year military dictatorship of Alfredo STROESSNER was overthrown in 1989, and, despite a marked increase in political infighting in recent years, relatively free and regular presidential elections have been held since then.

Beagle stamp from Somaliland

This stamp was issued in 1999.
The Republic of Somaliland (North West of somalia) situated on the tip of the Horn of Africa, was formed in 1991 after separating from southern Somalia. The people of Somaliland experienced more than three years of bitter civil war (1988-1991) resulting in the deaths of nearly 60,000 people, massisive displacement both internal and to other countries, and a near total destruction of infrastructure, communications systems, banking and public services.
Following a period of inter-clan conflict, the Somali people have settled internal disputes using traditional peace-building methods, and they have started to rehabilitate and reconstruct their damaged country. A stable administration has been formed, with a smooth transition of leadership following the death of former President Mohamed Ibrahim Egal, in May 2002. Demobilisation of former militia fighters into a national police force and army has created an environment of security within national boundaries.

Beagle stamp from Tadjikistan

Tadjikistan plays a fascinating role in the power struggle in central Asia. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the declaration of independence by the former Soviet republics, Tadjikistan acquired national sovereignty for the first time in history. Inexperience, in conjunction with a particular clan-oriented, regional-based, political culture established the foundation for the prolonged conflict that ensued in post-Soviet Tadjikistan. The intensity of this conflict has been further fueled by the ethnic and historical externalities of the unresolved political situation in Afghanistan.

Today, Russia's interests in Tadjikistan center around preserving its economic and geopolitical position in Central Asia. These interests, however, conflict with those of the newly independent states in the region, which are focused on preventing Tadjikistan from becoming a "Russian protectorate." In this respect, resolution of the civil war in Tadjikistan is part of the broader problems of reconstituting global spheres of influence and establishing a "new world order" in the wake of the Soviet collapse.
In addition to the seemingly obvious military, strategic, and geopolitical factors, there are critical economic issues that underlie Russia's interests in retaining Tadjikistan within its sphere of influence. Tadjikistan is a mountainous country, rich in fuel and mineral deposits. Tadjikistan's potential to generate hydroelectric power is second only to Russia among CIS member states. Moreover, not so long ago, Tadjikistan was Moscow's main supplier of several minerals, as well as cotton. Finally, the country has the resources and infrastructure to become a major industrial power in the region.
This country is worth studying on its own and now it has issued some of the nicest stamps available from any country including this Beagle that was issued in 2002.

It's a unique place with the landscapes ranging from the desert to the perma frost, and local fauna-from camels to reindeers. Touva is known as almost the only place in the world where shamanism, a very ancient religion, is preserved, kept and cultivated in its original form.
The republic of Tuva lies at the upper reaches of the Siberian Yenisey River and forms a barrier between Russia and Mongolia. Since its independence from the former Soviet Union, Tuva continues to struggle to work on the appropriate way to safeguard and develop its own identity and sovereignty going through the difficult changes from a command-orientated planned economy towards an open market economy. Udmurtia is approximately midway between Moscow to the Urals. Its land is a hilly wooden plain with numerous swamps, springs and rivers. Its climate is a bit too wet and not healthy. Summer is short, rainy and cool, autumn is very cloudy (often there are almost no sunny days from October till January), foggy and rainy. This not very friendly land was originally inhabited by Udmurts (or Votyaks). These peaceful and quiet Finnish people maintained their culture heritage there at least for five thousand years. Their religion is also ancient. They worship the God (called Inmar, The Highest Being) and His assistants governing various elements. Beagle Envelopes

Beagle stamp from USA

This hand-painted silk cachet envelope is from the American First Day Cover Society “Court of Honor series.
Eight popular breeds were selected by the U.S. Postal Service for its Block of Four Dog Stamps issue of September 7, 1984, its release timed to coincide with the American Kennel Club's 100th anniversary convention. The AKC, largest organization of its type in the world, is the official registrar of purebred dogs in the U. S., sanctions shows and sets breeding standards.
When you compare a huge, shaggy Newfoundland dog to a tiny Chihuahua, or an apartment-dwelling well-groomed poodle with her pink "hair bow" to a sleek racing Greyhound, it seems difficult to realize that all dogs are members of a single species, along with wolves, jackals and coyotes. The distinguishing feature which separates dogs from their wild cousins is the upturned tail. Dogs are the oldest domesticated animal. Archeological evidence has been found which links dogs to human culture as far back as several millennia B.C.
Today, dogs are part of millions of American households. Most are affectionate pets; some serve as guard dogs or Seeing Eye dogs, and some have performed remarkable feats of heroism in protecting their masters. They have well earned the title of "man's best friend."
Scott #2098-2102
In 1979, Freda Dickie Weaver introduced her hand-painted cachets with the Sc. 1787 “Seeing For Me” stamp issue. Collectors were mesmerized with the beauty and the life-like appearance of her cachets. They immediately became much sought after covers which commanded a premium price. This attracted many skilled artists to the first-day cover field. Through Freda Weaver’s efforts, hand-painted covers have become a major collecting interest. Freda’s covers are extremely complex and detailed. They are hand-painted in life-like colors that accurately portray the subject at its time of use. The demand for her work far exceeds her capacity to produce. Her attention to detail makes the covers living bits of time. She is, without question, the leading cachet artist of our time.

OLD DRUM
Black and Tan Coonhound
Died 1870 - Warrensburg, Missouri

"Old Drum" is the focal point on this magnificent envelope. He stands alone on the left. The eight chosen stamps are shown to the right.
Old Drum, a hound dog, was shot dead in 1870 by Samuel "Dick" Ferguson, nephew and ward of Leonidas Hornsby, an irate neighbor who thought Drum had been killing his sheep.
Drum's owner, Charles burden, sued Hornsby (who also happened to be his brother-in-law), and the case eventually went to the Missouri Supreme Court where Burden won the case. But it was in the courtroom in Warrensburg that Burden's lawyer, future Senator George Graham Vest, delivered his famous tribute: "the one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world....is his dog."
A statue of Old Drum was erected, and still stands, on the current Johnson county Courthouse lawn (the old courthouse where Vest delivered his famous speech still stands elsewhere in town). Burden was awarded fifty dollars.
Dick Ferguson, the reported shooter of Old Drum, later moved to Oklahoma, where he himself died of gunshot wounds in the town of Anadarko.
(Old Drum: North Holden St., Warrensburg, MO.: Directions: Johnson County courthouse. West from Hwy 13 via East Market St.)

BEAGLE

See above envelope description for information on the artist, Freda Dickie Weaver.
A Beagle and a Boston Terrier stamp is affixed to the upper right of the envelope. This a first day of issue, September 7, 1984, to coincide with the American Kennel Club's 100th anniversary convention. The AKC, largest organization of its type in the world, is the official registrar of purebred dogs in the U. S., sanctions shows and sets breeding standards.
The Beagle is among the five most popular breeds in America today. One of the "tracking hounds" - dogs that rely mostly on their sense of smell to track game - Beagles are widely used for hunting hares and rabbits, their favorite prey. Beagles have the usual "hound" colors - predominately white with tan or black and tan markings. Although Beagles are not among the most easily trained dogs, they are usually happy and friendly, and make affectionate pets.
Both the Beagle and the Boston Terrier are favorites of owners who enjoy lively, lovable pets that are good companions. Scott #2098

St. Kitts & Nevis are located in the northern part of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Like no other islands in the Caribbean, they seem to embody a kind of lush tropical paradise usually associated with the South Pacific. The atmosphere here is luxuriant, an intoxicating blend of sunlight, sea air and fantastically abundant vegetation. On Nevis, the ground rises upward into a cloud forest filled with elusive green vervet monkeys and brilliant tropical flowers. Nevis was named after the spanish word for snow, not because there was any, but because of the white clouds that encircle the single peak of an island.

*Truly one of the cheapest unique treats for yourself or a friend (great for club trophies as well!)

* It is absolutely true that you will often find some of these stamps at very reasonable prices -- some can be had for under a dollar. On the other hand, if you add in the gas, hours, and hassles that it has taken to find them, you may find it easier to just get them from us while we have them :*) I don't always count on getting more in the near future. I get them when I can find them and the stock is not always constant.

* I do have other breeds available. Let me know and perhaps I can do a page for your breed.
